Do you avoid shaking hands because your palms sweat excessively? Are your feet so sweaty that your socks and shoes always have an unpleasant odor? Do you feel embarrassed by the yellow stains caused by sweat spreading under your arms? These are issues that many people face. You might be experiencing a condition known as hyperhidrosis. Even if it's not caused by a medical condition, excessive sweating can still be managed. You can take steps to prevent the unpleasant odor and dampness that may affect your confidence and daily life.
Steps to Take
Use Antiperspirant Products

Start by using an antiperspirant stick under your arms. Make sure to read the label carefully to ensure it's an actual antiperspirant, not just a deodorant. Deodorants mask body odor but do not help control excessive sweating.

Look for products labeled as "specialized treatment". Antiperspirant products designed for intensive sweat control are often priced higher, but they offer more effective results in reducing excessive sweating.

Apply the antiperspirant product once in the morning and again before bed. Clinical studies have proven that applying the product twice daily is very effective in preventing excessive sweating. If you only use it once, apply it at night instead of in the morning. Additionally, gently massage the product into your skin to enhance absorption.

Only apply the antiperspirant to dry skin. If your underarms are sweaty or if you've just showered, make sure to dry your skin with a towel or use a blow dryer set to cool air. Applying the product to damp skin can cause irritation.

Use antiperspirant on other body areas besides underarms. Aerosol antiperspirant sprays are an excellent solution for sweaty feet, as long as you ensure it covers the soles and between the toes. If your face sweats heavily, you can try applying a small amount of antiperspirant along your hairline. Always test it first before going out in public to avoid any irritation on your face.
Wear appropriate clothing.

Choose moisture-wicking fabric. Cotton fabric will absorb moisture similarly to the material used for athletic wear (which has moisture-wicking properties). Additionally, you can opt for looser woven fabrics, such as linen.

Layer your clothing. Men should wear undershirts that help absorb sweat, while women can wear moisture-wicking camisoles or use sweat-absorbing pads.

Pick the right colors. If you wear white clothing, it's easier for others to notice sweat stains. Opting for darker colors or patterned fabrics can help conceal sweat marks.

Choose breathable shoes if you suffer from sweaty feet. Brands like Geox offer insoles that wick moisture and allow air to flow through holes in the insoles. Alternatively, you can reduce foot sweat by wearing shoes made of leather or other natural materials. When possible, opt for sandals or go barefoot to allow your feet to breathe.

Bring spare clothing. Carry an extra T-shirt or jacket to swap into during the day when your clothes show sweat stains. Change in a restroom or car, and use a cloth or handkerchief to blot sweat before putting on fresh clothes. Additionally, if your feet sweat and develop an odor, bring spare socks and shoes.

Try using sage leaves.

Wash your hands and feet with an herbal mixture. Combine eucalyptus leaves, oak bark, walnut leaves, witch hazel leaves, and tormentil root in equal amounts. Add 5 tablespoons of the mixture to 2 liters of water. Boil the mixture for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat. Add 1 liter of cool water, and use the mixture to soak your hands and feet.

Use herbs to prevent excessive sweating. Mix 3 parts sage leaves and walnut leaves with 2 parts nettle leaves and strawberry leaves. Pour 1 cup (250 ml) of steaming water into the mixture and drink it before bedtime.

Drink tea made from mint leaves, fennel seeds, or perilla leaves if sweating is caused by anxiety or stress. Drinking these teas before bed can help you relax and unwind, which can reduce feelings of anxiety.

Add essential oils to your bath. Try using rose, lavender, or orange essential oils to create a pleasant fragrance and mask body odor.

Apply the essential oil in a thin layer to your hands and feet. Choose oils such as geranium, tea tree, or cypress oil.
Seek medical assistance

Consult with your doctor or dermatologist beforehand. If you're experiencing soaked clothing, which may cause discomfort or make it hard to control sweat odor, you should visit a general practitioner or dermatologist. Health professionals can perform blood tests to check for thyroid issues or infection signs, or carry out other assessments based on their expertise.

Consider iontophoresis for excessive sweating in your hands and feet. Your doctor may recommend an at-home iontophoresis device—this uses a mild electrical current through water to 'shut off' sweat glands.

Inquire about Botox injections. Botox can temporarily paralyze sweat glands for 7-19 months after each injection. It’s commonly used to control underarm sweating but can also be injected into the face, hands, or feet.

Use the MiraDry device. This device targets areas under the arms or other sweat-prone regions that have a layer of fat for protection. The handheld device emits controlled electromagnetic energy, and the heat destroys sweat glands. Doctors usually recommend two sessions spaced three months apart.

Take anticholinergic medication. Although not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), these drugs have long been prescribed for excessive sweating. Athletes, outdoor workers, and those engaged in physical activity should avoid using these medications, as they inhibit sweat production, potentially making it harder for the body to cool down.

Consider psychological intervention. If anxiety is the cause of excessive sweating, cognitive behavioral therapy or psychological therapy may help reduce sweating.

Consider surgery as a last resort. You have two options.
- Underarm surgery. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia in a dermatologist's office. The doctor will use suction, scraping, or laser techniques to destroy the sweat glands. Recovery typically takes about two days, but you should avoid using your arm for up to a week. Unfortunately, health insurance may not cover the cost of this procedure.
- Endoscopic sympathectomy. Under general anesthesia, a surgeon will cut the nerves responsible for triggering excessive sweating from the spinal cord. This surgical method can have serious side effects, including low blood pressure, poor heat tolerance, and arrhythmia. Therefore, it is only recommended when other treatments have failed.

Ask your doctor about experimental treatment options. These may include acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, or relaxation techniques.
Advice
- Drink plenty of water, especially on hot days, to help detoxify your body.
- Even if sweat is visible, avoid adding extra layers to conceal it. Doing so will only worsen the odor and make the sweating situation worse. Eventually, the sweat will dry off. If not, you should go to the bathroom and clean up.
- Avoid drinking milk if you plan to be outdoors in the hot sun all day. Milk can make you feel fatigued and sweat more.
- If you're going outside, take frequent breaks. Enjoy some dairy products during your breaks. Also, carry a water spray bottle to mist over hot areas of your body, keeping your skin hydrated and preventing more sweating.
- Hyperthyroidism may cause excessive sweating as a secondary effect. If you have hyperthyroidism, seek medical help, as it could be a sign of diabetes.
- Try not to feel embarrassed by sweat stains.
- Sometimes excessive sweating is caused by poor eating habits. An unhealthy diet or too much sugar can lead to increased sweat production. This is also common in diabetes patients.
- Take cold showers to prevent further sweating, while drinking cool water to rehydrate and lower your body temperature.
- Try to remain calm to avoid sweating due to anxiety.
- Dark-colored clothing can absorb heat, leading to more sweating.
Warnings
- If excessive sweating is accompanied by symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, stomach pain, or chills, it could be a sign of a serious issue, such as a heart attack. Seek immediate medical attention.
