When the summer heat becomes unbearable, our bodies tend to swell. This occurs because the body’s ability to remove fluid from its tissues becomes less efficient. Typically, the feet and ankles are the areas most affected by this. Sometimes, it may feel like your joints are stiff or that you’ve gained weight rapidly. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent and minimize swelling.

Adjust your daily habits

Stay active. You don’t need to do intense workouts in the heat to gain the benefits of physical activity. Walking is a great way to prevent swelling, as it provides enough cardiovascular activity to stimulate blood circulation. Steady blood flow helps prevent the body from swelling. Walking for 30 minutes a day is enough when you’re just starting out.
- If you already exercise regularly, continue maintaining this routine. Consistent physical activity is crucial to keeping the body stable.
- If you have to sit for long periods, make sure to stand up and move around. Avoid sitting or standing still for extended periods, as this can cause swelling in the feet.

Wear clothing that enhances blood circulation. Avoid cotton fabrics in hot weather. Cotton retains moisture, which will only make you feel hotter. Opt for compression tights or sleeves to stimulate blood flow effectively.

Follow a suitable diet. In addition to staying hydrated, having the right diet is crucial. A few small adjustments can make a significant difference in preventing swelling.
- Consume more vitamin B6, B5, and calcium, which are found in brown rice and fresh fruits.
- Avoid processed foods. Frozen meals and canned foods are high in salt. Instead, opt for fresh produce. If you must have processed foods, compare labels to find the best option for you.

Maintain a low-salt diet (less than 1 teaspoon). A low-salt diet is essential for reducing swelling caused by heat, as salt promotes swelling. Avoid foods like potato chips and salted peanuts. Refrain from adding salt while cooking or sprinkling it on your food at the table.
Reduce swelling

Elevate swollen limbs. If your legs are swollen, lie down and raise your feet above your head. This position helps reduce swelling. If the swelling doesn’t improve, try keeping this position while sleeping.

Massage swollen limbs. Gently massage the swollen areas, but avoid causing any pain. Rub the muscles vigorously to help reduce fluid buildup in the tissues.

Do stretching exercises throughout the day. If you notice that you’ve been sitting or standing in one position for too long, take a moment to do some stretches. Every hour, take 2-5 minutes to stretch. Foot stretches, quadriceps stretches, and calf stretches are great ways to stimulate blood flow without needing much movement. You can easily stretch at your desk or while standing, so your work schedule remains undisturbed.
