If the living environment is not suitable or properly maintained, crickets can easily fall ill and die. Fortunately, creating a healthy environment for crickets is not too difficult. First, you will need a clean tank or a sufficiently spacious area to house the crickets. Next, feed them regularly and provide an adequate water supply to ensure their health. If you follow these steps correctly, your crickets can live for 8 to 10 weeks!
Steps
Create a Healthy Living Environment

Prepare a tank of about 3.8L for 100 crickets. Crickets thrive in larger spaces, so try to house them in the biggest tank possible. Be sure to choose a tank with a ventilated and secure lid so that the crickets cannot escape. You can use either a plastic or glass tank.

Clean the tank with a mild cleaning solution to remove all bacteria. Before placing the crickets inside, you need to clean the tank. Mix a small amount of cleaner with cold water, dip a cloth into the solution, and wipe the inside of the tank thoroughly. Be sure to let the tank dry before adding the crickets.

Add small pieces of egg cartons to the tank for the crickets to live in. Prepare several egg carton trays and tear them into small pieces. Then, place these pieces at the bottom of the tank to provide shelter and space for the crickets. These carton pieces will offer the crickets a place to hide and a necessary environment to grow.

Always maintain the tank temperature between 24–32 °C. Keeping the crickets in a dark environment with a stable temperature will ensure they grow healthy. If the tank temperature is too cold, the crickets will die or turn cannibalistic. If the temperature is too hot, their lifespan will be shortened.

Clean the tank twice a month to keep the crickets healthy. Carefully transfer the crickets to a container with ventilation holes, clean the tank bottom, and remove all the feces and dead crickets. Then, use a diluted cleaning solution and a cloth to wipe the inside of the tank for disinfection.

Move the crickets to their new home as soon as you bring them back. Crickets cannot tolerate cramped, closed spaces. If you leave them in the transport box for too long, they will die. Therefore, transfer them to a clean tank immediately after bringing them home.
Cricket Care

Feed crickets with oatmeal, cornmeal, or cricket-specific food. Place a dish of cornmeal, barley flour, or food meant for crickets in the tank. The crickets will consume it to fuel their bodies and generally won’t overeat.

Provide water for the crickets using a damp sponge or a piece of fruit. A small water dish can easily cause crickets to drown. Therefore, it is better to offer water from other sources like a damp sponge or a piece of fruit, such as apple or peach. The crickets will drink from these.

Always keep food and water available in the tank for the crickets. There should always be food and water in the tank so that the crickets can eat and drink whenever needed. Remember to remove old food and replace it with fresh food once a week. If you use fruit as a water source, make sure to replace it daily to prevent rotting and bacterial growth in the tank.
- Crickets won’t overeat, so there’s no need to worry about feeding them too much.
