Previously, Facebook was the largest social network globally with a constantly increasing user base. However, with the rise of TikTok, offering a new experience through 'Reels' format, Facebook gradually lost its dominant position. To compete with TikTok, Facebook had to adapt and incorporate similar features to keep up.
Facebook Reels, also known as short videos, are clips that are less than 90 seconds long and shared on the platform for everyone to enjoy. The Reels feature on Facebook uses smart algorithms to suggest content similar to the user's preferences, just like TikTok. For instance, if you often watch financial news on Facebook Reels, the algorithm will recommend other finance-related videos.
In general, Facebook Reels functions like a mini-TikTok integrated into the platform and shares the same database as Instagram. This means that Reels from Instagram will also appear on Facebook, but users can only comment on them via Instagram, not directly on Facebook.
II. How to completely disable and hide Reels on Facebook
Content on Reels is a mix of good and bad news, but in the digital age, where everyone strives for fame, exploiting negative content has become a popular choice. If you're being bothered by irrelevant, false, or spammy content on Reels, you can hide and block it immediately.
1. How to hide Reels posts on Facebook
If you encounter content on Facebook Reels that you don't want to see—content that's not useful to you—but still wish to explore other Reels videos, you can choose to hide specific posts. Hiding posts will signal to Facebook that you're not interested in that type of content, and it will recommend fresh, relevant videos instead.
Step 1: Open Facebook Reels and scroll to the videos you wish to hide, ones you don’t want to be recommended or displayed.
Step 2: Tap the Options icon (three dots) (1) ➨ Hide Reel (2).
This way, Facebook will understand that you’re not interested in similar content on Reels and will recommend better, more relevant videos for you.
2. How to disable Reels in your Facebook News Feed
While scrolling through your Facebook News Feed, you may come across suggested Reels that you can click to watch. If you'd prefer not to see these Reels in your feed, you can turn them off to improve your social media experience.
Step 1: When you encounter Reels posts in your Facebook News Feed, tap on the Options (1) menu.
Step 2: Then, select Hide (2) to quickly turn off Reels in your News Feed.
3. How to disable auto-play for Reels on Facebook
Sometimes while browsing Facebook, you may encounter Reels that automatically play with sound, which can be quite annoying. In this case, you can simply turn off the auto-play feature for Reels, so they won't play on their own until you choose to watch them.
Step 1: Tap the Menu (1) and select Settings (2) to open Facebook settings.
Step 2: Next, select the Media Files (3) tab and choose Never Auto-Play Videos (4).
After this, Facebook will no longer automatically play Reels on your feed. Reels will only play when you actively tap to watch them.
4. How to block sharing of Reels on Facebook
Many users feel disturbed when their Reels are shared by others on the News Feed or 24-hour Stories, as their private content is spread widely. Don’t worry, you can easily turn off the Reels sharing feature in your settings.
Step 1: Open the Menu (1) ➨ Settings (2) ➨ Reels (3) to access Reels settings on Facebook.
Step 2: Next, disable the setting “Allow others to share your Reels to their stories?” (4).
Once you disable this feature, others won’t be able to share your Reels to their 24-hour Stories.
