If you often notice dark circles and puffiness beneath your eyes, it may be time to implement long-term solutions to address the root causes and permanently eliminate them. Fortunately, there are a few temporary fixes that can reduce, eliminate, or conceal under-eye bags for a few hours or days. While these won't solve the long-term issue, they can be helpful if you need to quickly get rid of under-eye bags.
Steps
Cool down to instantly reduce under-eye swelling

Cold compress. Soak a clean, soft towel in cool water, then wring it out to remove excess moisture. Gently apply the towel beneath and around your eyes, ensuring it covers the entire puffiness. Keep this compress in place for about 5 minutes.
- Perform this step while sitting upright to help fluid buildup beneath your eyes drain away.
- Cold compresses and other cooling methods work by constricting blood vessels, reducing swelling and dark circles in the skin beneath the eyes.

Apply cold spoons to the eyes. Soak 4 stainless steel spoons in a cup of ice water for 2-4 minutes to chill them. Carefully place one cold spoon on the dark circles and puffiness beneath the eyes, gently pressing down. Keep it there until the spoon warms up to your skin temperature.
- Re-soak the used spoon in ice water and take out another one. Repeat the process for the other eye's puffiness.
- Continue applying the cold spoon for 5-15 minutes, replacing the warm spoon with a cold one if necessary, depending on how long you need to reduce the puffiness.

Place cucumber slices on the eyes. Slice a cucumber into pieces about 1 cm thick and chill them in the refrigerator. Close your eyes and place the cucumber slices over the under-eye bags, covering them completely. Relax in an upright position with your head slightly tilted back for about 25 minutes.
- Cucumbers have a high water content, which gives them natural moisture and cooling properties, making them excellent for reducing swelling. They also contain quercetin, an antioxidant that inhibits histamine, which can help reduce swelling from allergies.

Use cold tea bags. Soak 2 tea bags in cold water and place them in the fridge for about 15 minutes to enhance their cooling effect. Then, place them over your eyes, ensuring they cover the puffiness. Lie down with your head slightly elevated and keep the tea bags on for about 25-30 minutes.
- Afterward, rinse your eyes and face with cool water and pat dry.
- Avoid using tea bags with spicy ingredients like pepper or cinnamon, as they could irritate the eyes. Chamomile and green tea bags are ideal due to their natural healing properties. Teas with caffeine can also help reduce swelling by limiting blood flow.
Quickly address underlying issues

Take antihistamines. Allergies are a common cause of under-eye bags. If you experience other allergy symptoms, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine.
- Similarly, under-eye puffiness can occur when you have a cold or sinus infection. Over-the-counter medications for these conditions may also help reduce swelling beneath the eyes.

Sinus Rinse. If sinus issues cause swelling around the eyes and antihistamines don't help reduce it significantly, consider using a nasal rinse to clear out the accumulated fluid beneath the eyes.
- Mix ¼ teaspoon (0.5 ml) of non-iodized fine salt with 250 ml of warm water.
- Pour the saline solution into a clean nasal rinse bottle, then tilt your head to one side and pour half of the solution into one nostril. Lower your forehead so that the solution drains out from the other nostril.
- Repeat the process for the remaining solution in the bottle, switch sides, and thoroughly rinse the other sinus cavity.
- You can also use a saline nasal spray for sinus rinsing.

Apply Eye Cream. There are several eye creams formulated to help reduce puffiness. For the best results, look for one that claims to work quickly.
- Retinol-based eye creams are a common choice. While they work well over time by stimulating collagen production, they may not provide immediate results.
- Eye creams containing caffeine might be a better option for quick relief from puffiness. Caffeine constricts the blood vessels that cause inflammation and dark circles.
- Another option is eye creams with arnica, a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient.

Maintain Hydration. It's important to drink the recommended amount of water, which is 8 cups (250 ml per cup) each day. Puffiness around the eyes can be caused by fluid retention, but dehydration can actually make your body retain more water.
- Additionally, you should reduce foods and drinks that can lead to further dehydration while dealing with under-eye puffiness. These include salty foods, alcoholic beverages, and caffeine-rich drinks.
Eliminate Puffiness Overnight
Remove Makeup Properly. Before going to bed, make sure to thoroughly remove all makeup from the day. Makeup around the eyes can cause tear production during sleep, leading to increased swelling when you wake up.
- If possible, use a makeup remover product to clean your makeup before bed. Makeup removers are specially formulated to grab onto cosmetic particles and lift them off, making them more effective than just water and soap.
- If you don't have makeup remover, you can also use a regular cleanser with water. Just be sure to thoroughly clean all the makeup off your eyes.

Elevate Your Head While Sleeping. Consider adding an extra pillow under your head before falling asleep. Alternatively, you could raise the head of your mattress or the entire bed frame. The main goal is to keep your head higher than the rest of your body.
- Elevating your head allows blood, mucus, and other fluids to drain away from your face instead of accumulating beneath your eyes, preventing puffiness.

Sleep on Your Back. If you're used to sleeping on your stomach or side, try transitioning to sleeping on your back at night. With your eyes facing upward, gravity will pull excess fluid away from the eyes rather than letting it collect there.
- If you're worried about rolling over onto your stomach or side during sleep, try placing a pillow beside you to limit your movement.

Get Enough Sleep. Poor sleep is one of the most common causes of under-eye puffiness. Make sure to plan your bedtime so that you get 7-8 hours of rest before your alarm goes off in the morning.
- Lack of sleep leads to the release of cortisol, a "stress hormone" that can break down collagen in the skin, weakening the skin under your eyes and making it more prone to dark circles.
Conceal Under-Eye Puffiness with Makeup

Apply Eye Cream. Before applying makeup, dab eye cream onto the puffiness under your eyes. Wait a few minutes for it to dry before continuing.
- Choose a moisturizing eye cream. For better results, opt for one with retinol or caffeine.
- Avoid using eye creams if you're prone to styes.
- Regardless of the type, eye creams help hydrate the skin and fill in fine lines where makeup might settle.

Conceal Dark Circles with Concealer. Gently dab a concealer that matches your skin tone onto the puffiness under your eyes. Use a brush to apply the product, but avoid rubbing the skin as that could cause further irritation.
- For the best results, opt for a lightweight, smooth-textured concealer. Thicker formulas may settle into fine lines under the eyes, making imperfections more noticeable.
- Avoid using your fingers to apply the concealer, as this can lead to applying too much. A small, flat brush is the ideal tool for the job.

Lightly Apply Contouring Powder. Although it's optional, a touch of contouring powder on your cheeks can help downplay puffiness around the eyes. Apply a bit of contouring powder to your cheeks and blend upwards, just below the eyes.
- The contrast from the contouring powder can make puffiness less noticeable, though it won't completely conceal it. However, avoid contour powders with shimmer, as these can actually highlight puffiness more.

Line Your Lower Lash Line with a Light Eyeliner. Choose a white, cream, or light beige eyeliner to line your lower lash line. This will make your eyes appear brighter and more awake, distracting attention from puffiness under your eyes.

Set with Powder. Use a wide, fluffy brush to apply a light layer of translucent powder beneath your eyes and over your cheeks.
- Setting powder will help lock in your makeup and prevent it from settling into fine lines around your eyes.
Tips
- Regularly apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses to prevent irritation or darkening of the skin around your eyes.
