Leftover cheese hamburgers from the previous day can make a tasty lunch or dinner, but they won't stay as fresh after a night in the fridge. When reheating a cheese hamburger, the key is to separate the bun and patty to heat the bread and filling separately before putting them back together. You can enjoy a hot and delicious cheese hamburger in just a few minutes using a microwave, oven, or stovetop.
Steps
Remove the filling from the bun

Let the burger sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Place the entire hamburger on the counter to allow it to reach room temperature. This helps the burger heat evenly and maintain a consistent temperature during reheating.
- Do not leave the meat filling outside for more than 2 hours to prevent it from spoiling.

Place the burger on a flat surface to separate the filling. Lay a cutting board or paper towel on the table and put the burger on top. Separate the burger into sections: the bun, the meat patty, the toppings, and the condiments. Hot vegetables in the burger will lose their freshness and texture when reheated.

Use a knife to scrape off the cheese and condiments from the meat patty and bun. There may still be some seasoning left, but most of it should be removed. The burger will taste much fresher with new condiments. The layer of cheese left on the patty won't affect how the meat reheats, though it may melt during the heating process.
- Consider preparing a few slices of American cheese for the reassembled burger.

Check the freshness of the vegetables and other toppings. Lettuce and tomatoes often become soggy during storage and might need to be discarded. Pickles, onions, bacon, and other toppings with lower moisture content will be fine and can be kept.
- If you want your burger to taste as fresh as possible, consider adding some fresh tomato, lettuce, and onion slices.
Use the microwave

Place the meat patty on a microwave-safe plate. Put the patty on a microwave-safe plate or a paper towel to reheat. Be sure to position the patty in the center of the plate to heat evenly.
- Check the bottom of the plate to ensure it is labeled microwave-safe.

Reheat the meat patty in the microwave for 1-2 minutes on low power. Place the meat patty in the microwave, close the door, and start reheating. Since the meat is already cooked, use the reheat setting or adjust the microwave to low power (30%) to avoid overcooking. If the patty is thicker than usual, pause the microwave and flip it over.
- The exact reheating time may vary depending on the thickness of the patty and the power of your microwave. Be sure to check the manufacturer's guide for recommended reheating times.

Check the meat patty’s temperature by touching it. Press a finger gently against the patty to see if it’s warm enough. If the meat feels warm, it’s ready to come out of the microwave. If it’s still cold or only slightly warm, you should heat it a little longer.

Reheat the meat in 30-second intervals if necessary. If the meat hasn’t reached the desired temperature, try reheating it for another 30 seconds. If the burger is too cold, continue reheating for another half-minute. If after a minute it’s still cold, you can heat it in 10-second bursts until it’s fully warmed.
- If you want to add a fresh slice of cheese, place it on top of the patty and heat both for an extra 10 seconds.

Reheat the hamburger bun for 60 seconds on a lower power setting. Wrap the bun in a slightly damp paper towel and heat it in the microwave on 30-50% power. Heat for 60 seconds and check if it’s warm enough.
- Make sure to heat the bun just until warm, not hot.

Reassemble the burger. Place the warmed meat filling between the two heated bun halves. If the old toppings like tomatoes and onions are still good, you can add them back now. If not, grab some fresh veggies from the fridge and add them to the burger. Feel free to add condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, etc., if desired.
Reheat the burger in the oven

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Preheating the oven to this temperature is crucial, as it will help heat the burger quickly without overcooking it. This step should be done in advance, so the oven is hot by the time you're ready to finish preparing the burger fillings.

Place the meat patty on a metal rack and put it in the oven. Take the rack and set the meat patty on top. Place the rack on a large baking tray or pan to catch any grease dripping from the patty. Once the rack and tray are in place, put them in the oven.
- If using a baking tray, it’s a good idea to line it with aluminum foil for extra safety.
- Be sure to close the oven door after placing the patty inside.

Flip the patty after 3 minutes. Set the oven timer for 3 minutes and let the patty heat. When the timer goes off, flip the patty to ensure it heats evenly on both sides. Remember to use oven mitts or a pot holder when doing this.

Add the burger bun to the rack after flipping the patty. When you open the oven, place the burger bun on the rack beside the flipped patty. Keep an eye on the bun to prevent it from burning during the final 2 minutes of heating.
- If you'd like to add cheese, place a fresh slice on the patty during the last 1-2 minutes.

Wait for 2 more minutes before removing the burger. Set the oven timer for an additional 2 minutes and wait for the burger to heat up properly. If possible, turn on the oven light to keep an eye on the burger and prevent it from burning.
- The ideal result is a crispy bun when you take it out of the oven.

Assemble the burger by adding the meat patty, toppings, and condiments. Place the heated meat patty between the crispy buns, and add any toppings you had prepared earlier. If there are no toppings left, grab some fresh tomato slices and lettuce from the fridge and add them. Finish the burger by adding your preferred condiments on top of the patty.
Steam on the stove

Place the meat patty in a pan and pour in water. Put the meat patty into a small pan that fits the patty. Pour in about ½ cup (120 ml) of water, or just enough to create a thin layer of water at the bottom of the pan.
- Make sure the pan has a tight-fitting lid, as the steaming process requires a cover.
- You can also use chicken broth or white wine instead of water for added flavor.
- The bun cannot be steamed in the pan, so consider using the microwave or oven to heat the buns.

Cover the pan and steam the meat patty for 5-7 minutes. Place the pan on the stove and set the heat to medium-high. Cover the pan with the lid and steam for about 5-7 minutes.
- When you cover the pan, steam will collect inside. The steam is the primary source of heat for warming the patty.
- If you want to add a fresh slice of cheese, open the lid, place the cheese on top of the patty, and steam for an additional 30-60 seconds. Open the lid once the cheese has melted.
