How to Relocate a Newborn Kitten Nest

Typically, a mother cat searches for a secure place to create a nest for her kittens. When selecting a spot, she tends to consider features like: quietness, darkness, dryness, and distance from predators, male cats, or curious humans. Occasionally, cats may make poor decisions when choosing a nest due to inexperience, changing conditions, or simply making an incorrect choice. In such cases, you may need to move the newborn kitten nest to a safer location to ensure their protection.

Choose a New Nest for the Mother Cat and Kittens. Ask yourself some key questions before moving the kitten nest: Is the new location secluded enough to prevent the mother cat from relocating the nest? Set up a new nest after choosing the location. A cardboard box that fits the mother cat comfortably in terms of length and width can make a suitable kitten nest. A storage basket can also serve as a nest if the openings are less than 3 cm wide. If the holes are larger, the newborn kittens might slip through, get injured, or become cold.

Line the kitten nest with old clothes, blankets, or thick, clean towels. Place these items in a quiet area, then set up the nest, along with food and water bowls. The goal is to make the location attractive to the mother cat, encouraging her to create a safe and warm nest for your newborn kittens.

Entice the mother cat out of her current spot with some tasty food. Small pieces of cooked chicken or a spoonful of canned fish are good options. You need to lure the mother out of the nest without taking her too far. It's important that she sees what you're doing from a short distance.

Pick up the kittens from the old nest, making sure to hold them securely so they don't fall to the floor. When held, newborn kittens will usually cry for their mother. Don't let their meowing distract you. Continue carrying them to a safe place without hesitation.
