How to remove a retweet post

Whenever someone shares something that you believe should be spread, retweeting is an effective and easy way to let others know about it. Twitter allows this through the official 'retweet' action. Fortunately, if you decide to change your mind after retweeting, you can simply undo the action and remove all traces as if it never happened.

Open the Twitter app on your phone. Look for the blue bird icon and the word 'Twitter' below it, then tap on it to open the app.

Go to your profile page. In the bottom right corner of the screen, you will see a gray outline of a profile picture with the word 'Me' underneath. Tap this button to open your Twitter profile.

Scroll through your profile to find the retweet you want to remove. Your profile contains a full history of tweets and retweets you have made. A retweet will appear with two green arrows rotating below the tweet. On the left is the profile picture of the user who originally posted the tweet.

Tap the retweet icon to delete the shared post. This action will remove the tweet from your profile, and no one, including you, will be able to see it on the Twitter feed anymore.

• Note: this will not delete the original tweet from the timeline of the original author.

Access your profile. To proceed, click or tap on the profile picture in the top right corner of the screen. A dropdown menu will appear. Click your name on the Twitter handle (or tap 'Profile' on the mobile version). You are now on your personal Twitter profile, which contains the complete history of statuses, tweet replies, and retweets you have made and received.

Find the retweet you want to delete. Scroll through your Twitter profile to view your retweet history. You can easily spot tweets you’ve shared by looking for the retweet icon below the tweet: two green arrows rotating.

If the retweet was made over 6 months ago, your username and icon will appear in the list of people who retweeted, but the retweet icon will be gray instead of green. To delete the original retweet, you’ll need to retweet it again to turn the arrow icon back to green. Then you can immediately remove the retweet by clicking on the green retweet icon. This will also delete the retweet you made over 6 months ago, along with its content.

Click or tap the Retweet icon. The retweet will be 'undone' or removed from your profile, meaning neither you nor others will be able to see it in the Twitter feed anymore.

• This process does not remove the original tweet from the timeline of the user who posted it.

You need to understand the difference between a retweet and a copied tweet. If you want someone else’s tweet to appear on your profile, you can repost their tweet. Simply copy the tweet from another user, paste it into your own tweet, and post it. Technically, these posts are not retweets, so the process of deleting them is the same as deleting a regular tweet. Therefore, the steps below are also how to remove a tweet from your Twitter profile.

Go to your personal profile page. The way to find your profile depends on whether you're using Twitter on a computer or a phone:

• On the mobile app, tap the profile picture in the bottom right corner of the screen with the word 'Me'.
• On the web browser, click on the profile picture in the top right corner of the screen. Then click on your Twitter handle that appears in the dropdown menu.

Once you're on your profile page, look for the tweet you want to delete. Scroll through your profile to view the full history of your tweets until you find the one you want to remove.

• If you remember the tweet's content, you can enter a keyword in the search bar at the top right of the screen to find that specific tweet (although this method will also return results from other users).

Click the three gray dots in the bottom right corner of the tweet you want to delete. A list of options will appear.

Click 'Delete Tweet'. The tweet will be removed from your profile!

Identify retweets from users you don't follow. Occasionally, someone you don't follow may tweet, and their content gets shared by a user you do follow. You can recognize these retweets by the phrase '[Twitter user] retweeted' above the tweet, with a green retweet icon beside it.

Visit that user's profile. Click or tap the username displayed above the retweet.

Look for the gray gear icon in the top right corner of the user's profile. This icon is located just to the left of the blue 'Following' button. Tap or click the gear to open the dropdown menu.

Click or tap 'Turn off Retweets'. This will stop you from seeing any future retweets from this user. Since you can't delete another user's retweets from your timeline, the only solution (if necessary) is to selectively turn off retweets from specific users. There's also no way to block all retweets on Twitter, so you must perform this action for each user individually. To reduce clutter, visit the homepage of the users you follow.

• You will still see tweets written by that user.
• Note: this action doesn't apply retroactively, so any previous retweets will remain on your timeline.
