In most cases, stickers are made with adhesives designed for easy removal. However, in some instances, stickers on glass can be quite stubborn, leaving behind remnants, especially if they are meant to be permanent. With a little help and scrubbing, paper stickers or decals and their adhesive can be removed from the glass surface.
Steps
Using Hot Water and Soap

Soak the glass items and the stickers in soapy hot water. Let them soak for about 10 to 30 minutes to soften the paper and adhesive, making it easier to remove with your fingers.
- Water and soap help dissolve the adhesive, allowing it to come off the glass.
- If you can't submerge the glass items in water, dip a cloth or sponge into the hot water and apply it to the sticker area.

Peel off the sticker. Gently remove the sticker using your fingers or scrape it off with a blunt knife by inserting the knife tip into the corner of the sticker, then pushing the blade between the sticker and the glass until it is fully detached.
- Ensure the knife is blunt and not too sharp for scraping. A blunt knife has been dulled, so when you use it on the surface, it won't scratch the glass.
- Additionally, you can buy a specialized scraper for removing adhesive from surfaces.
Using Baking Soda

Soak the glass and sticker in soapy hot water. Let them soak for about 10 to 30 minutes to soften the paper and adhesive, making it easier to remove with your fingers.
- Water and soap help dissolve the adhesive, making it easier to peel off the glass.
- If you can't submerge the glass, dip a cloth or sponge into hot water and apply it to the sticker area.

Peel off the sticker. Gently remove the sticker with your fingers or use a blunt knife to scrape it off by inserting the tip of the knife into the corner of the sticker, then pushing the blade between the sticker and the glass until it is completely removed.
- Make sure the knife is blunt and not too sharp for scraping. A dull knife has been used for cutting and chopping, so it won’t scratch the glass when you use it on the surface.
- You can also buy a scraper designed for removing adhesive from surfaces.
- In some cases, the sticker may come off easily after soaking in hot water and soap.

Mix equal amounts of baking soda and cooking oil. Baking soda is a non-toxic, natural substance that is safe to use around pets and children. It’s an excellent cleaner that can dissolve dirt and grease. Adding oil to the baking soda creates a paste-like mixture that adheres well to all surfaces.
- Any cooking oil works. You can use olive oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil.

Protect the surrounding surface that you don’t want to clean or damage. Use a cloth or paper to cover the area and secure it with tape to prevent adhesive from spilling over.
- The surfaces you want to protect may include plastic, painted surfaces, wood, or fabric.
- Baking soda is relatively safe, so if you accidentally spill the paste on an undesired area or skin, it won't cause harm if you wash it off immediately.

Scrub the paste mixture of baking soda and oil onto the glass surface. Let it sit for a few minutes for the baking soda to take effect.
- For extra sticky stickers, leave the paste on the sticker overnight.

Wipe off the paste mixture. The adhesive and remaining paper will soften, making it easier for you to wipe or scrub off the sticker.
- Alternatively, you can use a coarse cloth or sponge like a scouring pad to increase the scrubbing power. However, be careful not to scratch the glass surface.
Using Bleach

Pour hot water and bleach into a bucket or sink. Depending on the amount of water you're using, add between half a cup and one cup of bleach for effectiveness. Bleach and hot water act as a dissolving agent that can melt the adhesive off the sticker, loosening the bond from the glass surface.
- Wear gloves when handling bleach as it can irritate your skin. Bleach bonds more effectively with saltwater or mineral-rich water, producing more cleaning bubbles than baking soda and detergent, which helps clean surfaces and clothing more effectively.

Soak the glass for 30 minutes. You can leave it longer or even overnight for super sticky stickers.

Remove the glass from the water. Since bleach has a stronger alkaline than baking soda, the sticker should peel off the surface or come off easily.
- Make sure to wash the glass thoroughly after soaking it in bleach, especially if it is glassware used for food storage like jars or cups.
Using Heat

Heat the glass surface. Use a hairdryer set to the highest temperature and blow air for 1-2 minutes. Alternatively, you can leave the glass in the sun for several hours. The heat will melt the adhesive, and the sticker should come off in time, but be quick as the adhesive will cool and harden again.
- If you want to remove a sticker from a car window, park it in the sun for 2-3 hours.

Peel off the sticker. Gently pull it off with your fingers. Be careful as the surface will be very hot. Additionally, use a blunt knife to scrape off the sticker by inserting the knife’s edge into the corner of the sticker, then push the blade between the sticker and the glass until it comes off completely.
- Make sure the knife is dull and not too sharp. A dull knife has been worn down, so using it on the surface won’t scratch the glass.

Use soap, oil, or adhesive remover. There may still be leftover adhesive from super sticky stickers, and additional steps may be necessary.
Using Rubbing Alcohol

Apply rubbing alcohol to a paper towel, napkin, cotton ball, cotton swab, or cloth. This method is especially useful for glass items that cannot be soaked in a bucket of water. It also prevents making a mess.
- Rubbing alcohol is flammable, so use it carefully. Do not use it near a stove or in high-temperature areas. Use it in a well-ventilated space.

Scrub the sticker with rubbing alcohol. The sticker should peel off, or you can repeat the process until it comes off.
- Rubbing alcohol is a solvent that can dissolve adhesives like those found on stickers. It dries almost instantly, so it can be used to clean electronic items without the risk of damage from water.
- Try to keep the rubbing alcohol damp on the glass surface to saturate the sticker.
Using WD-40

Protect yourself and any surfaces that may be damaged. WD-40 is a strong solvent used for removing adhesives, but it is also a powerful chemical compound. Be sure to avoid contact with your skin, fabrics, or even glass.

Spray WD-40 onto the sticker. To avoid getting it on the glass, you can spray WD-40 onto a clean cloth and then wipe it onto the sticker.
- Protect your hands by wearing gloves.

Wipe the sticker with a clean cloth. The sticker or decal should start to peel off a bit, but some scrubbing will be necessary. For tougher stickers, you can use a scraper or a dull knife to remove them.
Tips
- There are many specialized products designed for removing adhesive from stickers. Be sure to read the instructions on the packaging carefully.
- Nail polish remover containing glycerin can also be used when applied to a cotton ball.
Warning
- Be cautious with solvents, as they may deform plastic, fabric, or other sensitive surfaces.
- The best option is to use a stainless steel blade, as it won't scratch the surface.
- If using a hairdryer or heat gun, be careful not to crack the glass.
- Take care not to scratch the glass. Apply light pressure when scraping with a razor, knife, or credit card.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling solvents.
