Amazon's Kindle e-reader app enables you to download books, documents, and magazines online through your registered Amazon account. There may come a time when you want to delete books from your library or device because they are no longer useful to you, or you need to clear out content from a lost device. Whatever your reason for removing books from your Kindle, here are some methods you can use:
Steps
Remove Books from Your Content Library

Go to the “Manage Your Content and Devices” section. To permanently delete a book from your Kindle content library, all you need to do is access the online content library on Amazon's website. Open a web browser to get started.
- You can access the content and devices section by visiting: https://www.amazon.com/mycd
- You must log in to your registered account to access this section.

Ensure you see the “Your Content” section. Once logged into your account, you should see the “Your Content” section. If another section appears instead, simply click the “Your Content” button to view the list of items in your library.

Select the book you want to delete. You will notice empty checkboxes on the left side of the screen under the “Select” column. Each row has a checkbox for you to click and choose the book. Click the checkbox next to the book you wish to remove.

Click the delete button. At the top left of the list, you will see an orange “Deliver” button and another orange “Delete” button. Click the “Delete” button to remove the selected books.

Confirm the deletion of the selected books. You will need to confirm the deletion by clicking the “Yes, delete permanently” button. This action ensures the items are permanently removed from your library.
- A confirmation dialog will appear to verify the deletion. Click “OK” to dismiss the dialog.

Synchronize your device. To remove the deleted books from your Kindle device library, simply sync your device. To do this:
- Open the Kindle app by clicking the Kindle icon on your device’s screen.
- Then, click the three dots in the top-right corner of the screen.
- The first option you’ll see is “Sync & Check for Items.” Click this, and the books will be removed.
Remove Books from Your Kindle Device

Go to the Home screen. Access the Kindle Home screen by clicking the black-and-white house icon. From the Home screen, you can view your entire Kindle library by scrolling up or down.

Locate the title of the book you want to delete. Scroll through the screen to find the book title you wish to remove. If you don’t see it, click the magnifying glass icon at the top-right corner of the screen. You can enter the name or keywords to search for the book title on your device.

Press and hold the title to delete it. Once you’ve located the book you want to remove, press and hold the icon until a menu (selection bar) appears. Hold for a few seconds until the menu shows up on the screen. You’ll see several options, including the “Remove from device” button.
- Select the “Remove from device” button. Click this to delete the book from your Kindle device.
- Remember that after removing the book from your Kindle device, the content will still be available on the Cloud (cloud storage service). This means you can re-download the book later if needed.
Archive Books on Kindle

Turn on your Kindle. Go to the Home screen and click the Kindle icon. This icon is black with a small white house symbol.
- You can power on the device by holding the power button. When holding the Kindle vertically, press and hold the power button for a few seconds. The Kindle will turn on after you release the button.

Use the 5-way controller (navigation pad) to browse your library. Once you find the book title you want to delete, ensure the selected title is highlighted with a bold black underline.

Press the right arrow on the 5-way controller. A list of options will appear. At the bottom of the list is the “Remove from Device” button. Use the navigation pad to move to this option. When you’re sure you want to archive the book, press the center button on the pad to select “Remove from Device.”
- After archiving, the book can be re-downloaded. Archiving simply removes it from your Kindle but retains the purchase and download information.
- Restore archived books by accessing the "Archived Items" section on your Kindle screen. Scroll until you find the desired title, then press the center button on the navigation pad to download the content again.
Delete Your Kindle Account on Amazon

Consider deregistering your account. If your device is lost or stolen, deregistering the device from your Amazon account is the best way to ensure your books are no longer accessible on that device. This is also a good option if you plan to sell the device.
- Remember that after deregistering the device, all books on the Kindle will be removed, and you won’t be able to access them without re-registering the account.

Go to the “Manage Your Content and Devices” section. By hovering over your account, you’ll see the “Manage Your Content and Devices” button. You need to log in to access this section.
- You can also access the content and devices section online by visiting: https://www.amazon.com/mycd

Select the “Your Devices” option. After logging into your account, click on the “Your Devices” section. Once on the page, you’ll see a list of devices registered to your account.

Choose the device. Select the device you want to deregister by clicking on it. When selected, the device icon will have a pink background with an orange border. Other devices will not have this color highlight.

Click the “Deregister” button. This button is located just below the device list on the left side of the screen. Once you’re sure you’ve selected the correct device, click the button.
- After clicking “deregister,” the Kindle will be disconnected from your Amazon account. All purchased books will be removed from the device. You won’t be able to download or purchase books until you register again with another Amazon account.
