Most moles are not a health risk, but those on the face can impact your appearance. Removing facial moles is challenging, as some methods may leave scars. A professional medical procedure is the safest and most reliable way to permanently remove moles. Alternatively, you can try some home remedies (though unproven) to remove moles without scarring.
Steps
Examine the Mole

Self-examine your skin. This method helps you detect if any new moles have appeared. Also, check if any existing moles are growing or changing color.

Count the moles. Having more than 100 moles could indicate a risk for skin cancer. In this case, it's important to consult a dermatologist.

Identify the different types of moles. Before attempting to remove a mole, it's crucial to recognize the different types and symptoms associated with each one. Some moles can be safely removed, while others should not be.
- Atypical moles – These moles may have concerning colors and sizes. They can be larger than a pencil eraser, irregular in shape, or multi-colored. If you have this type of mole, see a doctor to rule out skin cancer.
- Congenital moles – These moles are present at birth. Around 1 in 100 people are born with congenital moles. They vary in size, from as small as a pinhead to as large as a pencil eraser. Doctors suspect that people with congenital moles may have a higher risk of developing skin cancer.
- Spitz moles – These are pink, raised, dome-shaped moles. They can resemble malignant (skin cancer) moles, may bleed or leak fluids, but are usually benign.
- Acquired moles – These are simply common moles that develop after birth.

Identify symptoms of malignant moles (skin cancer). A common way to detect this is to remember the “ABCD” rule. If you suspect a mole is malignant, seek medical attention immediately.
- Asymmetry – The mole is uneven, with one side different in shape, size, or color.
- Border – The mole has an irregular, jagged, or uneven border.
- Color – The mole shows multiple colors, such as black, brown, blue, or light brown.
- Diameter – The mole has a diameter larger than 0.5 cm.
- Evolving – The mole changes in shape, size, or color over weeks or months.
Removing moles through professional medical procedures

Excision of the mole. Moles on the face can be removed through surgical excision. The dermatologist will either shave or excise the mole, depending on its nature.
- If the mole is small and primarily on the surface of the skin, the doctor will shave it off. First, the area is numbed, then the surgeon uses a sterilized scalpel to remove the mole and the surrounding tissue. No stitches are required, but a flat scar (which may vary in color) will be left. The scar may or may not be visible compared to the original mole.
- If the mole is flat or has deeper cells within the skin, the doctor will excise it. In this procedure, the mole and surrounding unaffected skin are removed with a scalpel or sharp tool. After the surgery, stitches will be needed, and the process may leave a thin, faded scar. However, excision is not typically recommended for removing facial moles due to the scar left behind.

Ask your doctor about the cryotherapy method for moles. This procedure, also known as 'cryosurgery', involves spraying or applying a small amount of liquid nitrogen directly onto the mole. The liquid nitrogen is so cold that it destroys the mole's cells.
- This therapy typically results in a small blister at the site of the mole, which will heal on its own after a few days to a few weeks.
- Once the blister heals, the skin may or may not have a faint scar. Even if a scar forms, it will usually be less visible and more subtle than the original mole. Therefore, this method is worth considering for moles on the face.

Find out if mole cauterization is an option. A dermatologist may use a laser or a procedure called 'electrosurgery' to burn off a mole.
- During laser surgery, the doctor uses a small, specialized laser beam to target the mole. The heat from the laser breaks down the mole's tissue, causing the cells to die. After the procedure, a small blister may form and heal on its own, possibly leaving a faint scar. Note that laser treatments are not suitable for deep moles on the face as the laser often cannot penetrate deeply enough.
- In electrosurgery, the doctor first shaves the mole's surface, then uses a needle electrode to destroy the tissue beneath. The electrical current heats the needle, burning off the upper layers of skin. Multiple sessions may be required for complete mole removal. This method typically leaves minimal scarring and is worth considering for moles on the face.

Consider acid treatments. Mild, specialized acids can be used to remove moles. You can try over-the-counter or prescription-strength acid treatments.
- Always follow the product instructions carefully to avoid harming the surrounding skin. The general rule is to apply the acid directly to the mole, avoiding the unaffected skin.
- Salicylic acid is a commonly used acid for mole treatment.
- Acid products come in various forms, such as lotions, liquids, sticks, pads, or creams.
- Sometimes, the acid can completely remove the mole, but milder products may only lighten the mole.

Learn about popular herbal treatment methods. The only herbal treatment occasionally used by dermatologists is BIO-T. This solution is applied directly to the mole, which is then bandaged, allowing BIO-T to work on its own. The mole may disappear after around 5 days.
- This treatment is gentle and almost always leaves no scarring, making it a good option to consider for facial moles.
- The effectiveness of this method is still debated among professionals, so a dermatologist may or may not recommend it. If they don't mention it, feel free to ask for advice.
Home remedies with unverified results

Understand the limits and risks of home remedies. Most home remedies are based on personal experiences and often lack substantial medical evidence supporting their effectiveness. Additionally, home remedies can potentially cause permanent skin damage, scarring, or discoloration. It is recommended to consult with a doctor before attempting any home remedies.

Using garlic. The enzymes in garlic are believed to help dissolve moles by breaking down the cell clusters that form the mole. Garlic may lighten the mole's pigmentation and, in some cases, even remove the mole entirely.
- Cut a thin slice of garlic and apply it directly to the mole. Use a bandage to secure the garlic slice. Repeat this twice a day for 2-7 days or until the mole disappears.
- Alternatively, crush a garlic clove into a paste and apply it to the mole. Cover it with a bandage and leave it overnight, washing it off in the morning. Repeat this for up to a week.

Applying juices to the mole. There are various vegetable and fruit juices you can apply to moles. Typically, acidic or astringent elements in these juices may attack the mole's cells, causing it to fade or even disappear.
- Apply sour apple juice to the mole three times a day for up to 3 weeks.
- Apply onion juice to the mole 2-4 times a day for 2-4 weeks, rinsing it off after 40 minutes.
- Apply pineapple juice to the mole overnight and wash it off in the morning. Alternatively, place thin pineapple slices directly on the mole. Do this nightly for several weeks.
- Crush cilantro leaves into juice and apply directly to the mole. Let it dry, then wash it off. Repeat once daily for a few weeks.
- Mix roasted pomegranate with lemon juice in a 1:1 ratio to create a paste. Apply this mixture to the mole, cover with a bandage, and leave overnight. Wash it off in the morning. Repeat this for up to one week.

Make a paste from baking soda and castor oil. Mix a pinch of baking soda with 1-2 drops of castor oil. Stir with a toothpick until a paste forms. Apply this paste to the mole before bed and cover with a bandage. Wash off the dried paste in the morning.
- Repeat this method for about a week or until the mole fades and disappears.

Using dandelion root. Cut a dandelion root in half and squeeze it to release a milky substance. Apply this liquid directly to the mole and leave it for 30 minutes before washing it off. Repeat this daily for at least a week.
- There is no scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of this method, but it is believed that the milky substance in the dandelion root may help fade flat moles on the face.

Apply a flaxseed mixture. Mix flaxseed oil with honey in a 1:1 ratio. Gradually add a pinch of flaxseed powder to the mixture. Apply the mixture directly to the mole and leave it for about 1 hour before rinsing off. Repeat this method once a day for a week.
- Although there is no scientific evidence proving its effectiveness, flaxseed is a well-known folk remedy for treating various skin imperfections.

Try apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is gentle and naturally acidic. Similar to prescription acid products, apple cider vinegar can gradually burn the mole's cells until they die and disappear.
- Wash the mole with warm water for 15-20 minutes to soften the skin.
- Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar. Apply the vinegar to the mole for 10-15 minutes.
- Rinse off the vinegar with clean water and let it dry.
- Repeat this process four times a day for one week.
- The scab will fall off, leaving skin without the mole.

Remove the mole with iodine. Some people believe iodine can penetrate the mole's cells, helping to remove the mole through a mild, natural chemical reaction.
- Apply a small amount of iodine directly to the mole before bedtime and cover it with a bandage. Wash it off in the morning.
- Repeat this method for 2-3 days. The mole will gradually disappear after 2-3 days.

Treat the mole with bush flower extract. Soak bush flower extract in warm water for about 10 minutes. Apply the 'bush flower tea' to the mole on your face and leave it overnight. Rinse off in the morning.
- Repeat this process every night for one week.

Cover with a bandage and let the gel absorb for about 3 hours. Replace the bandage with a fresh one after 3 hours.
- Repeat this process once a day for several weeks. In theory, the mole will disappear after a few weeks.
Advice
- If hair grows from the mole, you can carefully trim it close to the surface of the skin with small scissors. Alternatively, you can visit a dermatologist for permanent hair removal.
- If you don't want to completely remove the mole due to risk or cost, you can use cosmetics to cover it. There are various cosmetic products specifically designed and marketed for concealing moles and similar skin imperfections.
