If you've just dyed your hair with a semi-permanent dye, but the color turned out too dark or not as expected, don't panic. Luckily, there are a few simple methods to lighten or even completely remove the dye within a day. Check out these tips on how to remove semi-permanent hair dye and restore your hair to its natural shade or the tone you truly desire.
Steps
Hair Dye Remover

Purchase a hair dye remover. This product will penetrate the hair shaft, wash away the dye, and restore your hair's natural pigments. You can find hair dye removers at beauty stores or some supermarkets. While this option can be a bit harsh on your hair, it is usually more effective. Since you're using semi-permanent dye, make sure to buy a remover specifically for semi-permanent dye, not permanent or demi-permanent dye removers.
- Check the product label for ammonia and bleach. Hair dye removers can damage hair, but if the product contains either of these chemicals, it can be even worse for your hair.
- To minimize hair damage when removing dye, look for products that contain ingredients like butter, oils, silicone, keratin, or protein. These ingredients help strengthen and hydrate your hair, potentially reducing damage.

Mix the hair dye remover with the activating solution provided in the bowl. The hair color remover kit comes with the color remover and the activating solution. Use a brush or mixing tool to thoroughly combine both chemicals.
- The kit may include detailed instructions, so it's important to read them carefully before using the product.
- If gloves are included in the kit, make sure to wear them, and consider wearing old clothes when mixing the solution. The color remover can stain clothes, and gloves will keep your hands clean during the process.

Test the product on a few strands of hair first. Tie your hair at the back, leaving only a small section exposed. Apply the mixture to the small section using a brush and wrap it in foil (to retain heat). Let it sit for an hour, or follow the instructions on the product box, then rinse with shampoo. If you're happy with the result, you can proceed with the entire head of hair.
- This test might be a bit of a hassle, but it ensures peace of mind, as you won't risk damaging your entire hair if the result isn't what you expected!

Apply the color remover with a brush. Tie or clip sections of hair to make application easier. Use a dye brush to apply the color remover to each section. Ensure that each part of your hair is evenly covered so no areas are missed.

Leave the color remover on your hair for 1 hour. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag. Generally, the product needs to stay on for 1 hour, but check the label for specific instructions.

Rinse and repeat if necessary. Rinse the hair color remover according to the product instructions, then blow-dry your hair. Once your hair is dry, you will see the final result of the color. If you're not satisfied, you can repeat the process.
Baking soda

Mix baking soda with dandruff shampoo at a 1:1 ratio. The combination of baking soda (a mild abrasive) and dandruff shampoo (a deep cleaning product) can help remove hair dye. Mix 1 tablespoon (15g) of baking soda with 1 tablespoon (15ml) of dandruff shampoo in a bowl and stir well until fully blended.

Apply the mixture to your hair like shampoo. Wet your hair with warm water (not soaking), then apply the mixture to your hair just like you would with shampoo under the shower.
- Be sure to apply it evenly throughout your hair, remembering to cover the inner layers, the ends, and your scalp.

Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes. Now it's time to wait! Don't rinse it off immediately. Wrap a towel around your shoulders, set a timer, grab a book, and relax.

Rinse your hair and use conditioner. After 20 minutes, rinse the mixture out of your hair. Baking soda can make your hair quite dry, so it's important to use conditioner to nourish your hair after rinsing the mixture out.
Vitamin C and deep-cleansing shampoo

Crush 15-30 vitamin C tablets. Similar to baking soda, vitamin C has natural whitening properties. When combined with deep-cleansing shampoo, it can help wash out dye and brighten your hair by a few shades. Use a pill crusher, mortar and pestle, or a spoon and bowl to crush the vitamin C tablets into a fine powder.
- You can also use ½ cup (120 ml) of ascorbic acid powder instead of 12-20 vitamin C tablets. Both ascorbic acid and vitamin C are available at pharmacies and vitamin stores.

Mix deep-cleansing shampoo with vitamin C powder. Add the crushed vitamin C powder to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of deep-cleansing shampoo in a bowl. Stir the mixture until fully blended. You can add a bit more shampoo to achieve a smoother consistency.

Apply the mixture to your hair. Wet your hair, but don’t soak it completely. Use your hands or a brush to spread the mixture evenly across your scalp. If you have thick hair, divide your hair into layers—bottom, middle, and top sections—using clips or hair ties. Apply the mask to each section to ensure full coverage.

Leave the mixture on for 1 hour. Cover your hair and let the mask sit. After an hour, rinse the mixture out with warm water.
- If your hair feels dry or itchy, use conditioner to nourish it. Blow-dry your hair to reveal the results.
