Whenever you use wax for hair removal, a small amount may remain stuck to your skin. Trying to remove it with your hands can be painful and ineffective. Fortunately, there's an easier method to clean the wax off: using oil. This cleaning technique works with any type of wax, whether it's hair removal wax or candle wax that drips onto the skin.
Steps
Removing Wax with Oil

Choose the oil you'd like to use. Any type of oil can effectively remove wax from your skin. The oil works by slipping under the edges of the wax, making the skin slippery so the wax can easily peel off. Wax removal kits often include a mineral oil designed to clean off any leftover wax. Alternatively, you can purchase a "wax-off" oil that contains ingredients specifically intended to remove wax from the skin. However, the following oils also work well for this purpose:
- Baby oil
- Massage oil
- Olive oil
- Canola oil
- Liquid coconut oil
- Oil-based lotion
Dip a cotton ball into oil. Soak the cotton ball in oil until it's fully saturated. You can also use a cotton pad, a folded paper towel, or a clean cloth. While it's possible to pour the oil directly onto your skin, using the cotton ball to apply the oil helps avoid messes.
Place the cotton ball on the wax for 30 seconds. Be sure to rub the oil around the edges of the wax. This way, the oil can seep between the wax and the skin, loosening the wax. Press gently on the cotton ball to allow the oil to soak into the wax.
- If the wax is spread over a larger area of skin, you can dip a paper towel in oil and place it on the wax, pressing down to let the oil soak through.
- If there are multiple areas of wax, you can use several cotton balls to treat them at once.
Scrub the wax off. Use a cotton ball to scrub the wax from your skin. It should come off easily. If the wax doesn’t come off, apply more oil. Keep rubbing and applying oil until the wax is gone.
- If the wax is stubborn, you may need to apply more oil. Be patient and ensure the wax is thoroughly soaked with oil.
- You can also try using a fish-skin cloth to remove any remaining wax pieces.

Wash your skin after scrubbing off the wax. Use soap and water to remove the oil. Pat your skin dry with a towel. Your skin will now feel soft and clean thanks to the oil you applied earlier.
- If you want to remove any remaining oil from your skin, simply use a mild dishwashing liquid to wash it off.
Prevent Wax from Sticking to Your Skin

Remember to moisturize your skin. If your skin is dry before applying wax, it will absorb moisture from the wax, causing it to sink deeper and stick to your skin, making it harder to remove. In the morning, before waxing, apply a good moisturizer to ensure your skin is well-hydrated.
- Make sure the moisturizer absorbs into your skin before applying the wax. Your skin should be moisturized, but not oily, as wax won't work effectively on oily skin.
- Avoid using oil-based moisturizers, as oils take longer to absorb and may reduce the effectiveness of the wax.

Trim your hair to a manageable length. Waxing works best when the hair is about 0.5 to 1 cm long. If the hair is too long, it can get tangled in the wax, making it difficult to remove neatly. This can result in wax sticking to unwanted areas of your skin.
- Try shaving about a week before you plan to wax. This will give the hair enough time to grow to the ideal length.
- You can also trim excess hair in areas where it grows too long, like along the bikini line.
Ensure the wax is the right temperature. Warm wax is thin and easy to spread, while cooler wax becomes thicker and harder to work with. Remember, the wax should be fully melted and in a liquid form before applying.
- Test the warm wax on a small patch of skin before applying it to a larger area. The wax should be warm, but not hot enough to burn.
- During the waxing process, you may need to reheat the wax if it cools down (unless you're using liquid wax).
Avoid sweating. Wax tends to stick to wet skin, so it's essential to keep your skin dry during the waxing process. You can prevent sweat buildup with the following methods:
- Dust some baby powder on the area to be waxed. This will keep the wax from sticking to your skin while still allowing it to remove the hair.
- Wax in a well-ventilated area. Turn on the air conditioner, open a window, or use a fan to keep cool while waxing.
- Avoid exercising or increasing your heart rate before waxing. Wax when you're calm and relaxed to prevent sweating.
Stretch your skin. After applying the wax and placing the wax strip on your skin, be sure to hold the skin taut next to the strip with one hand. Use the other hand to pull off the strip. If the skin is stretched tight, the wax will come off more easily. If the skin is loose, the wax may get stuck in the skin's creases and be harder to remove.
