Is your life being disturbed because of a past wrongdoing you've committed? Repentance is the act of confessing your sins to God, renouncing your faults, and finding peace. Start with Step 1 to understand how to repent and bring tranquility to your soul.
Steps
Acknowledge Your Sin

Humility. Remember: you may deceive yourself and others, but you cannot deceive God. If you truly seek repentance, you must humble yourself and admit that you don’t always do what is right. Be humble before God and trust that He is always right, and you must live according to His teachings.

Trust and Believe in God. You must trust that God can forgive you and will guide you toward a better life. Without faith, you'll quickly lose the motivation to correct your wrongs. Changing bad habits and righting your wrongs is challenging, and you need to trust that God is always by your side; without this trust, you will easily stumble.

Reflect on Your Actions. Think about the wrongs you’ve committed and all the mistakes you’ve made. Don’t limit yourself to only the big sins like cheating or stealing: all sins are equal in the eyes of God. Sometimes, writing about your wrongdoings can help. You don’t need to list every sin at once. It's best to take time for careful reflection.

Consider Why Your Actions Were Wrong. Before repenting, think about why what you did was wrong. Blindly following God’s commands only shows that you’re not truly remorseful. Reflect on those you’ve hurt through your actions and consider how your sin has affected you (hint: it’s not good for you!). Think about the harmful things that your sin led you to do. This step is crucial!

Repent Properly. Make sure your repentance is for the right reasons. If you think you need to repent for God to grant you some wish, then you’re not repenting correctly. Repent because it’s good for your soul and will make your life richer and more fulfilling—not because you want God to grant you worldly riches, wealth, or similar things. God doesn’t reward those things.

Read Sacred Texts. When repenting, begin by reading sacred texts depending on your religion (Bible, Quran, Torah, etc.). Read verses related to repentance, but you should also read the entire holy book so that God’s teachings enter your heart and guide you. When we sin, we stray off the path. You need to find God’s path to walk rightly.
- The Christian Bible has verses related to repentance, including Matthew 4:17, Acts 2:38, and 3:19.
- In the Quran, the verse related to repentance is At-Tahriim 66:8.
- In Judaism, you can find verses related to repentance in Hosea 14:2-5, Proverbs 28:13, and Leviticus 5:5.
Correcting Mistakes

Seek Guidance from Religious Advisors. Religious advisors such as pastors, priests, rabbis, and other clergy members can help you confess and correct your mistakes before God. Remember, their role is to assist you in your journey toward God! They are happy to help and understand that no one is perfect: they will not judge you! Even if you haven't formally joined their religion, you can still seek their advice and schedule a meeting with them, so don’t feel ashamed to talk to someone you don’t know well.
- However, don’t believe that you need to go to God’s house to repent or talk to an advisor for God to hear you. God listens to your words directly, just as much as through religious leaders. You can confess on your own if you wish.

Change Your Behavior. When you repent, it's crucial to change your actions. You must stop committing the sins you want to repent for. We know this is difficult, but you can do it! It might take time and some mistakes, but if you truly wish to repent, you will overcome temptation.

Seek Help. Changing yourself alone can be tough. It’s normal to need more than just keeping God in your heart! Admitting that you need help will please God, as it shows your humility. You can join a support group, talk to a religious advisor, participate in a religious community, or seek help from doctors or other professionals. Seeking help from people outside the church or religion won’t upset God: He gave them the ability to help for a reason!

Fix Your Mistakes. An important part of repentance is correcting the wrongs you’ve caused. You can't just say sorry and not face the consequences. If you steal something, you need to tell the owner the truth and return it. If your lies have caused difficulty for someone, you must tell the truth and assist them. If you cheated on a test, you should admit to your teacher and accept the appropriate punishment. Do what you must to help those you’ve hurt. This will please God.

Learn from Your Experiences. Take lessons from the mistakes you're trying to correct and apply them to avoid similar errors in other areas. Make your past mistakes more meaningful by using them to help yourself steer clear of life’s challenges. For example, if you lied about cheating on an exam and truly want to learn something valuable from this experience, make sure you don’t lie about other matters.

Help Others Avoid Your Mistakes. Another way your sins can serve a greater purpose is by helping others learn from your errors. Sometimes, this means you have to talk openly about what you’ve done, but you can also actively work to address the issues that led to similar mistakes. For instance, if you’ve struggled with drug use, consider volunteering at a local clinic or supporting legal efforts to combat this social issue in your community.
Accept Forgiveness

Live a Life that Pleases God. Once you’ve repented, take this opportunity to live in a way that pleases God as best as you can. Different religions and denominations have varying views on what pleases God, but you should also read scriptures and reflect on your feelings. If God resides in your heart, He will guide you to the right answers.

Officially Join Your Religious Community. One thing you can do to please God and help you avoid returning to sin is to formally and actively join your religious community. For example, if you haven’t been baptized (and you're Christian), consider undergoing this sacrament. Regularly serve, donate money to organizations so they can help others, and engage with community members about God’s teachings. Help and love your fellow believers, and you will be pleasing to God.

Be Active in Protecting Your Soul. You must actively protect your soul moving forward. Regularly confess your sins and confront them. Guard yourself against temptations and steer clear of harmful influences. Read sacred scriptures and allow God to guide you on the path that is best for you.

Accept That You Will Make Mistakes in the Future. You are not perfect, and you will stumble. God knows this. Recognizing this truth is when humility begins. Do not worry too much about actions that may displease God. What matters to Him is your effort to correct your mistakes, even if you have not yet perfected yourself.

Live Righteously. Sins are the mistakes we make that harm others and ourselves. By living a life free of sin, not only do we please God and protect our souls for the eternal life to come, but we also make our lives happier and more fulfilled. This is why acknowledging our sins early is so crucial. If you’ve done something that makes you unhappy or causes harm to others, stop! By bringing peace to your soul through forgiveness, you will live a far happier life.
Advice
- Forgive yourself. Do not judge yourself. The only judgment that matters is the forgiveness you offer to yourself. If you ask for forgiveness but fail to forgive yourself, you will constantly dwell on your past actions.
- Remember that there is no limit to forgiveness. God always loves you. Nothing can cause God to forsake you.
- Change your environment. If something leads you to sin, change the circumstances that caused you to fall into error.
- Know that God suffered for our sins, He was wounded because of our iniquities. By His suffering, we are healed (Isaiah 53:5). Now, He is ready to forgive you, if you have truly changed. Turn back to Him and ask for His forgiveness.
- Understand that you are the only one who can change yourself (with God's guidance). You may desire to change, and others may encourage you, but in the end, you will be the only one who offers yourself to God and the only one who can change yourself.
- Believe that change is possible. Why not believe that change is happening? If you are struggling with addiction or bad habits you want to overcome, trust that you can break free and seek help if needed.
- Christianity: Ask Our Lady, full of grace, to pray to Jesus on your behalf. He will listen to her prayers for sinners.
