If you've forgotten your user password on Windows XP or Vista, you can use the hidden Administrator account to reset it. If you've previously disabled access to your Administrator account, there are still alternative methods to retrieve or reset the password.
Steps to follow
Resetting the Password on Windows XP

Restart your computer.

Press and hold the F8 key before the Windows logo and loading bar appear. This will take you to the Advanced Startup menu.
- If the system has already booted into Windows, you will need to restart and try again.

Select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking". Wait for Windows to load into Safe Mode.

Choose the "Administrator" account.
- If the Administrator account is not visible, or if you're directed straight to the Safe Mode screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Del twice and enter Administrator in the User field. Leave the Password field blank.

Open the Control Panel. You can find this in the Start menu.

Launch the "User Accounts" utility.

Select the user account you wish to change the password for.

Click on "Change the password".

Enter the new password twice. Then click Change Password to confirm.

Restart your computer. This will exit Safe Mode and allow you to log in with your new password.

Find the installation or recovery disk for Windows Vista. To follow this method, you will need to access the Recovery Console, a feature that can only be reached with a Windows Vista installation or recovery disk.
- You can download the Windows Vista ISO file and burn it to a DVD. It doesn't necessarily have to be the installation disk you used to install the operating system, but it must be a disk for the same version of Windows.

Insert the installation disk into your computer.
Restart your computer.
Enter the BIOS settings. When the POST screen (which appears before the loading bar and usually shows the computer manufacturer’s logo) is displayed, press the suggested key to enter your BIOS setup.
- Refer to related articles for more detailed explanations.

Restart your computer.

Press any key to boot from the inserted disk. The Setup program will begin.

Click on .Next (Continue) on the Install Windows screen.

Click on "Repair your computer". This option is located at the bottom left corner of the Install Windows screen. After clicking it, wait a moment for the Setup program to locate your Windows installation.

Select "Windows Vista" and click .Next >. Note down the drive used for Windows installation. It is typically C:, though in some cases it could be D:.

Select "Command Prompt" from the System Recovery Options menu.

Type .copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\. Press Enter.
- If Windows is installed on the D: drive, replace c: with d:.

Type .copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe. Press Enter.

Type .y and press Enter.
- This will allow you to run the command prompt from the login screen without booting into Windows.

Remove the installation or recovery disk and restart your computer. This will allow Windows to boot as usual.

Download OPHCrack. This is a free, open-source utility that uses advanced algorithms to crack your password. The program is freely provided by the developers, with its entire code open to the public for review. OPHCrack is available in ISO format, meaning you will need to burn it to a CD/DVD to use it.
- Always download OPHCrack from the official SourceForge page. This is the version directly from the developers. Avoid downloading any EXE versions of OPHCrack. Ensure you download the correct version for your Windows operating system.
- Some antivirus programs may flag OPHCrack as a virus. This happens because it contains certain tools categorized as 'malware': designed to access systems without permission. However, using OPHCrack from SourceForge will not infect your computer with any viruses.
- If you are locked out of your computer, you will need to use a different machine to perform the process.
Burn the OPHCrack ISO file to a blank disk. This will allow you to boot from the disk and run OPHCrack software without needing to load Windows.

Boot the computer from the burned OPHCrack disk. Insert the disk into the computer that you need to crack the password for and boot from the disk. Refer to other guides to configure your system to boot from the disk. Once configured correctly, OPHCrack will automatically run upon startup.

Select "Ophcrack Graphic mode - automatic" and press Enter. After the files have loaded, OPHCrack will open the graphical menu.

Wait for OPHCrack to recover the password. Once running, OPHCrack will automatically begin attempting to recover all of your passwords. This may take some time, especially with complex passwords.

Find your username. In the User column, you will see all the active Windows User accounts.

Locate the password that was found. The discovered passwords will appear in the "NT Pwd" column. If a particular user shows "empty" in this column, it means that user does not have a password set.

Write down your password, remove the disk, and restart the computer. Now, you can log into Windows as usual, using the password that has been recovered.

Create a password recovery disk. Once you have regained access to Windows, you can create a password recovery disk to prevent similar issues in the future. This disk will help you quickly recover a lost password.
Warning
- Running OPHCrack on a computer that is not yours or one that you are not authorized to use is considered unauthorized access and is illegal.
