If you're planning to sell your Xbox 360 or if a major system malfunction prevents you from gaming or connecting to Xbox Live, you can reset your Xbox 360 to erase all data and restore the factory settings. However, this will not remove parental controls. If you're locked out due to parental controls, you can reset the password to disable them, but you'll need to prove to Microsoft that you're authorized to remove this feature. If your Xbox 360 is running slowly or displaying poor graphics during games, you can clear the cache to resolve these issues.
Steps
Restore to Factory Settings

Reset your Xbox 360 to factory settings if you plan to sell the console or encounter serious errors. This will erase all content from your Xbox 360, but will not remove parental restrictions. To disable these controls, you must prove to Microsoft that you have the authority to remove them. Further instructions are available in the next step.

Back up your important files. A factory reset on your Xbox 360 will erase all data on the console. Before proceeding, it’s a good idea to back up anything you want to keep.
- Plug a USB drive into the Xbox 360 as a storage device.
- Press the Guide button on the controller and go to the "Settings" tab.
- Select "System Settings" > "Storage" and choose the Xbox 360 hard drive.
- Choose "Transfer Content" and then select the external drive.
- Select the content you want to transfer and click "Start". The transfer may take a while.

Press the Guide button on your Xbox controller. This button is located in the center of the controller and has the Xbox logo.

Select "Settings" > "System Settings". The screen will display various system configuration options.

Select "Console Settings" > "System Info". This will show a window displaying your console's details.

Write down the "Console Serial Number". This is the serial number of your Xbox 360, which you will need to reset the system.
Tip: You can find the serial number next to the USB port on the front of the Xbox 360, or on the back of the console, just above the A/V port.
Go back to the "System Settings" page and select "Storage". The screen will display the storage devices connected to your Xbox 360.

Highlight the Xbox 360 hard drive and press the "Y" button. This will open the Device Options menu for the hard drive.

Select "Format" from the Device Options menu. You will be prompted to confirm that you want to erase everything on the hard drive. If you have backed up important data, you can proceed.

Enter the serial number if prompted. You may need to input the console's serial number before proceeding with the format. This serves as a safeguard to prevent accidental data deletion. Enter the serial number you recorded in the previous step.
- This method does not remove parental control settings. Instructions on how to remove these controls will be provided in the next section of the guide.

Delete user account. After formatting, you'll return to the Home menu. You'll log out of Xbox Live and all games will be deleted. Go to Settings > System > Storage to find the user profile and delete it.

Begin Initial Setup. Go to Settings > System and press [Initial Setup]. Confirm your selection.
Remove Parental Controls

Press the Guide button on your Xbox controller. This button is located in the center of the controller and has the Xbox logo to open the Guide menu.
Note: If you're attempting to bypass the parental control setup, it’s impossible to do so. Microsoft will require proof that you’re authorized to change the parental control password.

Open the Settings menu and select "Family". This will open the parental controls section.

Select "Content Controls". You will be prompted to enter a password.

Enter the wrong password to trigger a reset. Since you don’t know the Family menu password, entering the wrong password will prompt you to change it.

Select "Reset Pass Code" when prompted. The screen will show a security question to reset the password.

Answer the security question if possible. If you set the password, answer the security question to create a new one. If you don’t remember the answer, or if the previous owner activated parental controls, read the next step for guidance.

Contact Xbox Support if you can't answer the security question. If the previous owner activated a password and forgot to remove it before selling the console, or if you can't remember the answer, reach out to Xbox Support to reset the password.
- You can contact support via support.xbox.com, either through live chat or by phone. They will ask you a series of questions to verify that you're authorized to disable the parental control feature (Support will not disable this feature if your parents were the ones who set it up).

Enter the password provided by Xbox Support. If they approve your request to reset the parental control feature, you will be given a password to bypass the current one. After that, you can either disable this feature or create a new password for it.
Clear Cache

Clear the cache if you're encountering issues with your Xbox 360. If your gaming experience is worse than usual or the system is slow to respond when switching between menus, clearing the system cache can help. This method works best for older Xbox 360 games. Clearing the cache will not affect saved games, files, or media content on the console, but it will delete game updates, which you will need to download again when you play the game.

Press the Guide button on your Xbox controller. This action opens the Guide menu.

Select "Settings" > "System Settings". You'll see various configuration categories to choose from.

Choose "Storage". This will display all the connected storage devices.

Highlight any storage device and press the yellow "Y" button. This will open the "Device Options" menu. It doesn't matter which storage device you select, as you'll be clearing the system's cache.

Select "Clear System Cache" and then confirm your choice. The process of clearing the cache will take a moment.
Tip
- Reset your Xbox 360 before selling or giving it away to protect your personal information.
Warning
- Performing a factory reset on your Xbox 360 will not remove parental control restrictions. If you don’t know the password or security question, you’ll need to contact Microsoft and prove you’re authorized to remove the restrictions.
