If someone sends you a video on Facebook Messenger, you can tap it to play directly within the chat. But what if you want to watch it offline? If the video is shared from Facebook, YouTube, or another online video site, you may be able to download it; however, be cautious, as downloading videos could violate copyright laws in your area and the website’s terms of service. If the video is sent as a file from the sender’s computer, phone, or tablet, downloading it becomes much easier. Here’s how you can save a video from Facebook Messenger to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
Steps
Download the attached video (On any mobile device)

Open the Messenger app. This is the blue chat bubble icon with a white lightning bolt, typically found on your home screen or in your app list.
- If the sender attaches the video from a computer, phone, or tablet (instead of pasting a link to an online video or sharing from a website), you can use this method to download the video.
- If Messenger doesn’t open directly to the Chats screen, tap Chats to navigate there quickly.

Tap on the conversation with the video. If you don't see the video right away, swipe the screen until you find it.

Tap and hold the video. Don't rush to play it – simply tap and hold the video until some options appear.

Tap on Save (Save) or Save Video (Save Video). If you don't see either of these options at the bottom of the screen, tap on
More to reveal additional choices.
- If you've granted Messenger access to your Camera Roll, the video will download right away. Otherwise, you will be prompted to grant permission.
- Once the video is saved, you can view it anytime, whether online or offline, by opening the Photos app or Gallery and tapping on the video.
