After spending some time playing Red Dead Redemption, you might need to take a break or want to save your progress before jumping into an intense gunfight. In fact, you can save your game at various locations throughout the world of Red Dead Redemption. Although the game has an auto-save feature after completing missions, manually saving your progress can speed up time and allow you to create multiple save files, enabling you to continue from any desired point. You can save your game at a hideout or a campsite.
Steps
Using a Hideout

Locate the nearest hideout. If you spot a house icon on the map, that indicates a hideout. A blue icon means the hideout hasn’t been purchased or rented, while a green icon shows that you’ve already bought or rented it for overnight stays.

Tie up your horse. If you're riding a horse, you’ll want to ensure it doesn’t wander off while you’re sleeping. For peace of mind, secure your horse outside the house. Note that not all hideouts have a designated spot for tying horses.

Approach the bed. Enter the hideout and move close to the bed. You can only lie down on the bed if you’ve purchased or rented the hideout.

Press the Save button. When standing near the bed, a prompt will appear indicating you can save your game progress. Press the triangle button (for PS3) or Y button (for Xbox 360) to initiate the save. Your character, Marston, will lie down on the bed.

Save the game. Once you lie down, time will fast-forward by 6 hours. You can either save the game or cancel to get up immediately. This method can also be used to speed up in-game time without saving your progress in the traditional way.

Choose a save file. If you decide to save, you’ll be prompted to select a save file. You can either overwrite an existing file or create a new one.
Using a Campsite

Find a spacious area. To set up a campsite, you need to locate a flat and open area, avoiding towns, residential zones, or hideouts. If you attempt to create a campsite in a restricted area, you’ll receive a prompt asking you to find a different location.

Open your satchel. You can create a basic campsite without purchasing any additional items. Access your satchel by pressing Select (for PS3) or Back (for Xbox 360).

Select the Kits. These are your tools. The Basic Campsite will appear in the list. You can purchase an Improved Campsite or save. Choose the Campsite from your Kits to set it up.
- You might stumble upon campsites set up by other characters. These appear randomly during gameplay, but you cannot save your progress at these locations.

Save your game progress. Once the campsite is set up, your character will automatically sit nearby. Initiate the save process by pressing the triangle button (for PS3) or Y button (for Xbox 360). Marston will then lie down in a sleeping bag.

Save the game. When you lie down, time will fast-forward by 6 hours. You can either save the game or cancel to get up immediately. This method allows you to speed up in-game time without saving your progress in the usual way.

Choose a save file. If you decide to save, you’ll be prompted to select a save file. You can either overwrite an existing file or create a new one.
Tips
- The game features an auto-save function that records your progress after completing each mission. While this ensures your progress is saved at specific points, it doesn’t fast-forward time by 6 hours, unlike manually saving the game.
