If you're looking to search for emails or chat messages from a specific date in Gmail, follow these simple steps. If you feel that isn't enough, you can explore additional advanced search terms for more specific results.
Steps
Go to the Gmail search section. On a computer browser, the search bar is located at the top of any Gmail page. On mobile devices, you might need to tap the magnifying glass icon to open the search bar.
Search for emails after a specific date. To find emails after a particular date, type after:YYYY/MM/DD into the search bar, replacing YYYY with the year, MM with the month, and DD with the day. For example, type after:2015/03/29 to search for emails sent after March 29, 2015.
- You can also use the word newer instead of 'after'.
Search for emails before a specific date. You might have guessed that typing "before:YYYY/MM/DD" will search for all emails before that date. You can also use the word older instead of "before" if preferred.
Combine both methods to narrow your search. You can use both search methods mentioned above in a single search. For example, typing after:2015/03/29 before:2015/04/05 will list all emails sent from the morning of March 29, 2015, up until before April 5, 2015.
Try other related search terms. For more recent emails, you don't need to specify exact dates. Instead, you can use older_than or newer_than. Here are some examples of search terms:
- older_than:3d = emails from 3 days ago or earlier.
- newer_than:2m = emails from the last 2 months.
- older_than:12d newer_than:1y = emails from 12 days ago up to one year ago.
Include additional search terms. You can combine general and advanced search terms in a single search. Here are some specific examples:
- after:2015/01/01 before:2015/31/12 rock climbing will list emails containing the words "rock" and "climbing" from 2015.
- newer_than:5d has:attachment will list all emails with attachments sent in the past 5 days.
- before:2008/04/30 from:Jenna dance will list all emails before April 30, 2008, from Jenna, including the word "dance".
Warning
- Do not use incorrect date formats. For example, if you type the year at the end instead of the beginning, the search will not return any results.
