Find a comfortable seat. Choose a chair with a sturdy backrest and a comfortable seating position. Set your phone to vibrate and minimize surrounding noise. You might even consider dimming the lights in the room.
- If you find music relaxing, play some soft background music. Consider instrumental tracks or soothing natural sounds.

Lean back and use a pillow to support your head, allowing your arms and shoulders to work more comfortably. Massaging your scalp means keeping your arms raised for extended periods, which can tire your shoulder muscles.
Slide your fingers into your hair from front to back. Use your fingertips to glide in straight lines from the front to the back of your head. Apply gentle pressure, paying attention to all the small contours of your scalp. Use moderate force, avoiding any pressure that causes pain or discomfort.
- Before starting, ensure your hair isn’t tied up in a ponytail or bun. You might even want to brush your hair lightly to prevent your fingers from getting caught in tangles.
Move your hands in circular motions from the front to the back of your head. Continue moving your hands from front to back, but this time, use your fingertips to make small circular motions while gliding. Maintain a gentle yet steady pressure.
Reverse the direction. Move your hands from the back to the front of your head. Repeat the circular and straight-line motions. Start by gliding from the hairline at the back and move toward the crown of your head.
Repeat this motion on both sides of your head. Now, focus on massaging the sides of your head. Start on the left front side, moving your hands in circular motions upward and downward. Gradually move toward the back left side. Repeat the same process on the right side, ensuring both the front and back areas are covered.
Place both hands on your scalp and move your arms. Spread your fingers into a C-shape and position your hands on either side of your head, with your thumbs resting just above your ears. Gently move your arms from front to back, keeping your fingertips in contact with your scalp.
- You’ll notice your scalp shifting slightly forward and backward as you move your arms.
Gently pull on a ponytail if possible. Gather your hair into a loose ponytail at the back. Hold the tail and give it a very light tug.
- If you have short hair, gather a small section, twist it lightly, and pull. Repeat this motion across different areas of your scalp.
Finish by gently rubbing around your ears. Start by placing your hands behind your ears. Use your thumbs and fingertips to make small circular motions around the ears, paying special attention to the earlobes. This is a relaxing way to conclude your scalp massage.
Incorporate Essential Oils

Select an essential oil. Essential oils can help relax your mind and body with their pleasant aromas. You can choose oils that cater to specific hair care needs.
- Lavender oil is ideal for moisturizing a dry scalp.
- Rosemary oil helps reduce excess oil on the hair.
- Chamomile oil soothes an itchy scalp.
- Tea tree oil is the best choice for treating dandruff, though lemon peel oil is also effective.
- Peppermint oil has a cooling effect and can stimulate hair growth.

Choose a carrier oil. Avoid applying undiluted essential oils directly to your scalp. Instead, mix 8-10 drops of essential oil with about 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of a carrier oil.
- Coconut oil is excellent for combating dandruff and is generally beneficial for the scalp.
- Castor oil can help thicken hair.
- Jojoba oil has mild moisturizing properties.
- Olive oil works well when combined with lavender or rosemary essential oils.
Pour the oil mixture onto the crown of your head. Use about half of the mixture at this stage. Tilt your head slightly backward to avoid getting the oil in your eyes.
Spread the oil across your scalp using your hands. Move your hands from the front to the back in straight lines, then repeat with circular motions. This helps distribute the oil evenly across your scalp.
- Focus primarily on your scalp rather than your hair during this step.
Lean forward and apply oil to the back of your head. Tilt your head forward until your chin touches your chest. Pour the remaining mixture along the hairline at the back of your head, then use your hands to spread it forward.
Massage your entire scalp. Now that your scalp is sufficiently oiled, take your time to massage the oil in thoroughly. Move from the front to the back and vice versa. Focus on both sides of your head, using circular and straight-line motions. Pay extra attention to areas where you feel tension or discomfort.
- You can also spend additional time massaging your temples.
Apply oil to your hair from roots to tips. After massaging your scalp, shift your focus to your hair. Gently work the oil into your hair, moving from the roots to the ends of each strand.

Leave the oil in your hair for at least twenty minutes. To maximize the benefits of the oil, leave it in for a minimum of twenty minutes or overnight. You can wrap your hair neatly in a towel before going to bed.
- For a salon-like effect, warm the towel in a dryer for a few minutes before use.
- If leaving the oil overnight, place a towel over your pillow to avoid oil stains.
- If your scalp starts to feel uncomfortably warm or painful, wash your hair immediately. When done correctly, you shouldn’t experience any discomfort.
Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. After the oil has set for the recommended time, hop into the shower. Rinse your hair thoroughly using your regular hair care products. Take a few minutes to massage your scalp while washing.
- You don’t need to wait until morning to rinse off the oil. If oil gets on your face, wash it off immediately. Avoid leaving oil on your skin overnight. Remember to wash your hands after completing the scalp massage.
