As the world's largest online retailer, Amazon is the ideal platform for selling books and other products. Selling on Amazon is a great option for anyone looking to make some extra income by selling items they no longer need. To successfully sell on Amazon, follow the steps outlined below.
Steps
Create a Seller Account

Click on the 'Your Account' dropdown box on the Amazon homepage. This option is located below your name at the top right corner of the page.

Click on 'Your Seller Account'. This option is located near the top of the menu in the right-hand column of the page.

Select 'Start Selling'. When you are redirected to the new page, you will be asked to choose the appropriate seller type. Depending on your preferences, you can sign up as an 'Individual Seller' or a 'Professional Seller'. Individual Sellers typically do not incur selling fees (except for order-based discounts), while Professional Sellers are subject to fees and are typically used by those with actual stores who earn profits from their sales.

Enter the relevant information. On the next page, you can fill out the seller's information, such as credit card details (which will be used for direct money transfers and refunding orders without selling other items), seller name (business name), and billing address.

Verify your phone number. Here, simply enter your phone number, click 'Call now,' and enter the 4-digit code you receive after the automated call.

Click 'Register and Continue'. Your seller account has now been successfully created.
List Your Product

Log in to your Amazon account. If you haven't created an Amazon account yet, go to the sign-in page, enter your email address in the email box, select 'no' for the password field, and click the 'Submit' button. Follow the instructions for the remaining details. You will need to provide your name, email address, and desired password. This process will only take a few minutes.

Search for the item you want to sell on Amazon. Use Amazon's database to search with relevant keywords and select the category that best matches your item. Keywords can include the product name, book or movie title, or their versions. You can also search by the ISBN (International Standard Book Number), UPC barcode, or Amazon's ASIN identifier. It's important to find the correct version and format of the product to ensure customers receive exactly what they ordered. Warning: if customers are dissatisfied, they may leave negative reviews about your poor service.
- Amazon also provides a list of products you recently purchased from their database: if you want to sell one of these products, you can select it from that list.

Click on 'Sell yours here' once you find the product.

Select the condition of your item. Amazon provides a list of condition options to choose from, ranging from new to used and collectible items. Choose the option that best reflects the condition of your product. While you can sell certain items as 'Collectible,' most sellers select Used-Like New, Used-Very Good, Used-Good, or Used-Acceptable. The 'Collectible' category has additional terms and conditions you must meet.

Add notes about the exact condition of your item. This note allows you to provide additional information about your item's condition, helping customers understand details not included in the Amazon product description. You can also add notes about your service, such as:
- No additional packaging box, only the original disc holder
- No user manual included
- Some scratches on the front and disc surface
- First-class delivery service

Set a price for your item. While you can set any price, your chances of making a sale are higher when the price is lower than Amazon's and other sellers' prices.

Select the quantity of items you have available. Choose the number of items you wish to sell. For individual sellers, this quantity is typically set to 1.

Choose a shipping method. This section lets you expand your shipping area to multiple countries and offer various methods, not just the 'Standard Shipping' option. Expedited shipping is also available for all sellers, though it comes with added responsibilities. If you are an individual seller, it's easier to choose domestic shipping methods.

Click 'Submit listing'. Your product will be listed for sale on Amazon. If you don't have a seller account yet, you will need to create one and follow the listing process. For guidance on setting up a seller account, refer to the previous section.
Pack and Ship Your Items

Log into your seller account.

Click on 'View your recent Marketplace orders'. This option is located under the 'Manage Your Orders' section.

Identify the order.

Confirm that the order is in 'Complete' status – This means your item is ready to be shipped. Click on the order number for that product.

Access the Order Detail page.

Confirm the shipping method.

Print the shipping label and delivery address. You can click on the 'view your current orders' link next to your order. The shipping label will display the delivery address and basic order information.

Pack your item. Your item needs to be packed carefully to avoid damage during shipping. The order summary should be placed inside the package, and the delivery address should be clearly written or attached to the outside.

Ship the item. You can ship the item using any method you prefer, but remember that the faster the delivery, the more likely customers are to leave positive reviews.

Confirm shipment. Go back to the 'view your orders' page, click the 'confirm shipment' button, and enter the shipping details.

Receive payment. The buyer's account will only be charged after the shipment is confirmed. For legal reasons, new sellers must wait 14 days before receiving payment. After this period, you can request a payout once a day.
Continue managing your account

Go to your seller account. This link can be found under 'your account' on the right side of the page. The seller account page lists all necessary links for your selling needs. These are the main links you will use as an Amazon seller:
- View your inventory. With this feature, you can check the stock of items you're selling.
- View your orders. This link helps you track your current orders.
- View your payment account. Here, you can monitor payments for your active orders.

Update or add account information using the 'seller account information' link. You can use this link to update any important account details for both Amazon and your buyers.

Find a specific order. To check the status of a particular order, you can search using the search box.

Wait until your item sells. When you sell an item, you will receive a confirmation email with the order details from Amazon. The waiting time depends on how 'hot' your item is. Hot items can sell within hours (assuming the price is right for the buyers).

Regularly check ratings and feedback from buyers. These are valuable sales tools that you gain after making sales. The more reviews and higher ratings you have, the more likely future customers will purchase from you. You can view your ratings and feedback on the 'view your ratings and feedback' page within your seller account.

Sell more. Continue listing more items and provide excellent customer service.

Refund orders when necessary. If a customer is dissatisfied with your service and you agree to issue a refund, you can refund the entire or partial amount on the 'issue a refund for an order' page in your seller account.
Advice
- Amazon offers several shipping support services. You can choose Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). However, if you're unable to address an issue with an item because it's been handed over to Amazon, you might miss out on potential customers.
- Check your email frequently for sales confirmation: failure to ship on time could lead to negative feedback.
- Amazon gives sellers a maximum of two days to pack and ship an item.
- Including your Amazon sales experience on your resume is optional. However, if you're seeking a sales position, this experience may help you land a job.
- Do not misrepresent the condition of your items, or you may receive negative feedback.
- If you fail to meet Amazon's policies, you may receive an A-to-Z guarantee claim. However, Amazon processes these claims fairly, so don’t panic. Pay close attention to details and handle the case carefully to clarify any misunderstandings, ensuring the money is correctly transferred and communicate with Amazon to resolve the issue the customer is facing.
- Some products require additional permissions to be sold on Amazon. Computers (software), toys, and some other categories have regulations based on your prior performance. Therefore, the feedback you accumulate throughout your sales is crucial.
- Monitor messages from buyers: these appear as notifications on the left column of your seller central page on Amazon.
- Amazon refers to their sellers as "Marketplace Sellers."
- If you need to take a break, Amazon allows you to temporarily disable your seller account. However, changes take 24 hours to take effect, so you'll need to continue processing orders until the wait period is over and your account page shows that your account has been disabled. When you're ready to return, the reactivation process is just as simple.
- Orders tend to increase during the summer and holiday seasons.
Warning
- Amazon charges a small commission on every order you sell. This fee will be automatically deducted from your account each time you receive payment from a buyer.
- Shipping. You will not receive payment if a buyer complains they did not receive the item.
- All sales transactions on Amazon NEVER include sales tax or use tax. Therefore, if you choose to exclude a receipt/invoice from the package, do not include any tax charges. While you can explain financial options as per Amazon’s policies, you don’t need to delve into financial matters. Simply direct the customer to Amazon’s free helpline for further clarification. Only Amazon is authorized to discuss financial details.
