1. What is a self-destructing email in Gmail?
The self-destructing email (Confidential Mode) feature in Gmail was developed in 2018 and officially launched in 2019 for businesses and all global users. With this feature, users can set a specific expiration time for an email before it is permanently deleted or limit access to the email after it has been successfully sent.
In Confidential Mode (self-destructing email), users can choose the following options: set an expiration time for the email, create a password for the email, and limit access to the email. Once the expiration time is reached (which can be extended up to 5 years), the email will be permanently deleted from the system and cannot be recovered. This self-destructing email feature works with all email service providers since the received email is not a secure email but a link to a Google server. To open the email, the recipient must click on the link and log in with a Google account for verification.
2. How to send a self-destructing email on Gmail from a computer
The Gmail PC platform (Gmail website) is widely used and popular among users. On the Gmail PC platform, you can easily send self-destructing emails quickly and conveniently.
Step 1: On the Gmail homepage, click on the Compose button to create a new email.
Step 2: Next, click on the Lock icon to activate the self-destructing email security feature.
Step 3: In the Security Mode window, you will need to configure the following details:
- Set expiration time: Define how long the email will remain active. Once the time expires, the email can no longer be forwarded, copied, printed, or downloaded.
- Require passcode: You can either let Google generate a passcode automatically or use your own passcode sent via SMS.
Once set up, click Save to finalize the self-destructing email configuration in Gmail for enhanced security.
Step 4: For self-destructing security activation emails, you will see a notification displayed on the system with the message "Content expires on...". If you need to make changes, simply select the Edit option to reset the time or configure a new password.
3. How to send self-destructing emails on Gmail for mobile
On both iOS and Android devices, you can also send self-destructing and secure messages just like on your computer. To send a self-destructing email through Gmail, you must use the Gmail app.
Step 1: Open the Compose feature on Gmail, select Options, and then choose Confidential Mode.
Step 2: In the Confidential Mode window, you'll need to configure the following settings.
- Set Expiry: Choose the duration for the email's validity. After it expires, the email will no longer be able to be forwarded, copied, printed, or downloaded.
- Require Passcode: Select the method to receive the passcode required to view, read, or forward the email.
Once the setup is complete, you'll see a notification on the email that says "Content expires on...". If you need to edit the security time or passcode, simply click Edit.
