Communication in virtual communities today has two sides: exciting and easily monotonous. While most people prefer anonymity, maintaining it isn't straightforward. There are various methods to send anonymous messages. Read the article below to explore how to send anonymous messages.
Steps
Using an Email Account

Create a new email account. You likely don't want to use your personal account because the recipient might see your personal information (name, email address, etc.). Instead, choose a new and free email service provider (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to set up an account that contains no personal information.

Obtain the recipient's phone number. Locate and verify the phone number of the person you wish to message.
- Even if you're sending an email, the recipient's phone number is often part of their email address.

Identify the recipient's mobile carrier. The person you want to message will be using a specific carrier, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Metro PCS, etc., in the U.S. All these carriers allow messaging to the recipient's phone via email. To determine the recipient's carrier, you can ask them directly or look it up on the following sites:

Combine the phone number with the corresponding carrier's email format. In other words, you need to compose an email addressed to the recipient's phone, not their email account. Simply enter the 10-digit phone number (without hyphens or spaces) and choose one of the following email formats based on the specific U.S. carrier:
- AT&T: SMS: [email protected], MMS: [email protected]
- T-Mobile: SMS/MMS: [email protected]
- Verizon: SMS: [email protected], MMS: [email protected]
- Sprint: SMS: [email protected], MMS: [email protected]
- Metro PCS: SMS/MMS: [email protected]
- Alltel: [email protected]
- Virgin Mobile: [email protected]

Compose a new email using the account you just created. After gathering the necessary information about the person you want to message, log into your new email account and draft a message. Enter the recipient's phone number and the corresponding carrier's email format from the list above in the address field. Then, click Send.
- To make the email appear as a text message to the recipient, leave the Subject line blank.
- The contact will receive an anonymous message.
Using the iPhone app

Select an iPhone application. While no iPhone app can hide your real phone number, several apps can generate a new fake number for sending messages. Below are some apps that offer this feature:
- Pinger
- TextPlus
- TextNow
- Burner
- Wickr
- Backchat

Open the App Store. Tap on the Search option located at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Enter the name of your chosen app. Alternatively, you can search broadly using keywords like 'Anonymous Text.' Various results will appear. Tap on an app (most of these are free), select GET, and then tap Install.

Enter your Apple ID password. After tapping Install, the system will prompt you to confirm your password. Enter your password in the required field and tap OK.

Tap Open. Once the app is installed, tap Open. You will be prompted to log in or sign up. Tap sign up and enter your phone number. Note: You must provide your real phone number at this stage. The app will send you a confirmation code via text. After successful registration, the app will ask you to create a new virtual number or allow it to assign a random one.
- Note: Some free apps, like Burner, may require payment to send anonymous messages.

Send your message. Once everything is set up, simply compose your message within the app. Enter the contact number you wish to message and tap Send.
- The recipient will receive an anonymous text.
Using an Android app

Choose an Android application. Here are some options that allow you to hide your phone number and send messages on Android devices:
- Anonytext
- Anonymous Texting
- Private Text Messaging
- Anonymous SMS

Open the Google Play Store. Tap the Google Play icon, then select the three horizontal lines in the top-left corner of the screen, and finally tap on the Store Home page.

Tap the search icon in the top-right corner. Enter the name of your chosen app or search broadly using the keyword 'Anonymous Text.'

Select an anonymous messaging app. These apps include both free and paid options. After considering your choices, tap on the app you wish to download.
- Depending on whether the selected app is free or paid, you will need to tap the Install button or the corresponding price.

Launch the app. Once the installation is complete, simply open the app. Some apps allow you to send a few messages for free, while others may charge you once you start using the service.

Enter the contact number you want to message. Tap the option to start messaging, input the contact number, compose your message, and then tap Send. Most of these apps will guide you through the necessary steps to begin messaging, making them very user-friendly.
- The recipient will receive an anonymous text.
Using anonymous messaging websites

Choose an anonymous messaging website. You can search online using keywords like 'Anonymous Texting' or 'Free Anonymous Text Messaging.'

Review the terms of the website you choose. Basic rules typically prohibit using the service for fraud, harassment, or other criminal activities. Additional terms may cover service fees, usage frequency, privacy policies, and more.
- Some free messaging services have shut down due to abuse. Verify if the service is still operational and pay attention to the Terms of Service on the website.
- Be cautious as these sites can trace you through your IP address. In other words, if you use their service for illegal or sneaky activities, you could get caught.

Enter fake sender information if required. Some services ask for a phone number, but this isn't always the case. If you want to use a fake number, make it convincing by adding random digits after the area code. You could also use a clearly non-existent number, such as 555-555-5555.
- Anonymous messaging services often don't require a phone number. Instead, they generate a fake number to send messages.

Enter the recipient's phone number. This information is always mandatory. Input the full 10-digit number, including the country code. Some anonymous messaging services may also ask for the specific mobile carrier.

Compose and send your message. Type your message, review any last-minute requirements the website might have, and click the Submit or Send button.
- The recipient will receive an anonymous message.
- Some free messaging services have character limits, typically ranging from 130 to 500 characters, similar to standard mobile text messages.
Advice
- There are valid reasons for sending anonymous messages. For instance, you might use anonymous messaging to report illegal activities to authorities, notify company management about fraud, or share critical information with someone without revealing your identity.
Warning
- Do not use anonymous messaging in any form to stalk others, send fraudulent/virus-laden content, or engage in other illegal activities. In severe cases, you can still be traced, even if the service or method is labeled as 'anonymous.'
