How to Set a Specific Country on the Tor Browser

Today, Mytour will guide you on how to customize the country you access and exit from when using Tor on your computer. This allows Tor to use a server located in a different country, enabling you to bypass web access restrictions in your current region. Note: Not all countries permit the use of Tor, so certain countries will not allow the access and exit feature to work.

You need to ensure that Tor has been launched at least once. To create the "torrc" file (which determines the appearance of the exit node on Tor), the browser must be launched at least once on the computer.

• You can launch Tor by double-clicking on the browser icon and selecting Connect.

Open the Tor folder. Navigate to the folder where you installed Tor, then double-click on the browser to open it.

Find the "torrc" file. You can navigate to the location of the "torrc" file in the Tor installation folder by following these steps:

• Double-click on the Browser folder.
• Double-click on the TorBrowser folder.
• Double-click on the Data folder.
• Double-click on the Tor folder.

Double-click to open the "torrc" file with Notepad. After double-clicking on the "torrc" file, the "Open with" window will appear. Select Notepad and click Open. You will now be able to edit the contents of the "torrc" file.

Add the "EntryNodes" line. Place the cursor at the bottom of the document and enter EntryNodes {} StrictNodes 1, then press ↵ Enter.

Add the "ExitNodes" line. Type ExitNodes {} StrictNodes 1, then press ↵ Enter.

Launch Tor. At this stage, Tor may take a few extra seconds to start, especially if you select a distant country.

Check the entry and exit nodes of your Tor circuit. Visit any website (e.g., https://www.google.com/) using the Tor browser, then click on the onion icon at the top left of the page. A dropdown menu titled 'Tor circuit for this site' will appear, showing the browser, entry node, intermediary connections, exit node, and internet data, listed top to bottom.

• In this case, you will see: Browser > Canada [IP address] > [Country] [IP address] > Uganda [IP address] > Internet

You must ensure that Tor has been launched at least once. For the 'torrc' file (which controls the display of the exit node on Tor) to appear, the browser needs to be launched on your computer at least once.

• You can start Tor by double-clicking the browser icon and selecting Connect.

Click on Go to Folder (Navigate to folder). This option is located at the bottom of the dropdown menu. A text box will appear in the center of your screen.

Enter the Tor directory address. Type ~/Library/Application Support/TorBrowser-Data/Tor/ and press ⏎ Return. The folder containing the "torrc" file will open.

Open the "torrc" file using TextEdit. Double-click on the "torrc" file, and when prompted to choose a program, select TextEdit. This will allow you to edit the contents of the "torrc" file.

Add the "EntryNodes" line. Place your cursor at the end of the document, then type EntryNodes {} StrictNodes 1 and press ⏎ Return.

Add the "ExitNodes" line. Type ExitNodes {} StrictNodes 1 and press ⏎ Return.

Open Tor. At this stage, Tor might take a few extra seconds to start, especially if you choose a country that is far away.

Check the access and exit nodes of the Tor circuit. Visit any website (e.g., https://www.google.com/) using the Tor browser, then click the onion icon at the top left of the page. A dropdown menu titled 'Tor circuit for this site' will appear along with the browser, access node, relay, exit node, and internet data, all listed from top to bottom.

• For example, you might see: Browser > Canada [IP address] > [Country] [IP address] > Uganda [IP address] > Internet

• During the initial setup, Tor will select an exit node from a country that best matches your region.
• If Tor is blocked in your country, try selecting a random circuit through another country by clicking Configure and checking the box 'Tor is censored in my country'.

• Contrary to common misconceptions, the default country circuit setup in Tor is usually better than your own configuration.
• If there are too few exit nodes, your trace will be scattered across the Tor network. Your Tor traffic will become 'easily noticeable' compared to other Tor traffic. This is detrimental when aiming for anonymity.
