At times, you may need to connect your laptop or tablet to the internet, but there is no available Wi-Fi or wired network. However, with just your iPhone, you can quickly access a personal Wi-Fi hotspot! The article below will show you how to set this up.
Steps
Set Up a Hotspot

Open Settings. Tap the Settings icon, typically located on the home screen, to open the Settings menu.

Enable Mobile Data (LTE) service if you haven't already. You won't see the option below if your iPhone was purchased under a prepaid plan, as these providers often disable this setting until you've paid for the minimum data packages required to maintain data service. iPhones sold under prepaid contracts through third parties typically leave LTE off until they confirm you can maintain data service on your device with the required payment. Tap Cellular in the Settings, then toggle the switch next to Cellular Data. If you see this switch turn green (or if it is already green), check the Personal Hotspot option below.

Return to the main Settings screen by tapping the "< Settings" button in the top left corner.

Select Personal Hotspot. If you've already activated Personal Hotspot on your wireless device, you will see the Personal Hotspot icon at the top of the settings menu.
- Note: If you haven't subscribed to internet service for your wireless device, you need to activate it before proceeding. Visit your network provider's website to choose the service that best fits your needs and budget.

Activate Personal Hotspot. Tap the toggle button at the top of the Personal Hotspot menu to enable Wi-Fi sharing feature.

Set a password. The current password will be displayed as plain text. If you are setting up wireless broadcasting for the first time, you will receive a default password. To change the password, tap the Wi-Fi Password button, enter a new password, and then tap "Done." You can also keep the default password as your password. Make sure to write down the password for future use.
Connect Another Mobile Device to Wi-Fi

Connect to another mobile device. To connect an iPad to your mobile hotspot, select the Settings icon.

Open the Wi-Fi control panel. On the left column, select "Wi-Fi."

Locate your Personal Hotspot on your iPhone. Under the "Choose a Network..." section, you will see the name of your hotspot network listed on your iPhone.

Enter the password. A dialog box will appear, asking for the password you set when you configured your hotspot in Part One. Enter the password here.

Check the connection status. The toolbar at the top of the iPhone screen, which is normally black, will turn green and show the number of connected users when it is used as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Note: There is no way to identify who is connected, but if you notice more people connected than expected, disable the hotspot, change the password, then turn it back on (and don’t forget to share the new password with those who should be connected).
Advice
- Many providers offer monthly services rather than contracts with a 2-year commitment.
- Check with your mobile carrier for the best service for personal hotspot use. In some cases, it may be more cost-effective for receiving devices (such as an iPad) to have their own separate service than using a shared device.
Warning
- Some services will disable Bluetooth if the Personal Hotspot is enabled.
