This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to open ports on your router so applications can access your network. Opening ports allows games, servers, BitTorrent clients, and other apps to bypass the usual router security that blocks connections to ports. However, it’s important to note that opening ports can also expose your network to potential security risks.
Steps to Follow
Access the Router on Windows 10

Ensure that your computer is connected to the internet. Before accessing the router page, make sure your computer has an internet connection to identify the correct address and connect to the router.

Click on View your network properties. This link is found towards the bottom of the window.
- You may need to scroll down to view the link.

Scroll down to the "Wi-Fi" section. You will find the "Wi-Fi" label next to one of the "Name:" titles on this page.

Look for the "Default gateway" label. It can be found near the bottom of the "Wi-Fi" section.

Find the number next to the "Default gateway" label. This number represents the router's IP address.
- The number will appear as an IP address, starting with 192.168.

Open the router page. Enter the default gateway IP address into your browser’s address bar and press ↵ Enter.
- For example, if the default gateway is "192.168.1.1", you would enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

Enter your username and password. Skip this step if you're not prompted for them. If you have set up security settings for your router (such as during the initial setup), use the username and password you selected then. Otherwise, common default login information includes:
- Linksys router — Enter admin in the username field and password.
- Netgear router — Enter admin in the username field and password in the password field.
- Check your router's user manual to verify the default username and password.
- If you've forgotten your login info, you'll need to reset the router.
- You can also find the username and password on the router’s label.

Wait for the router setup page to appear. Once the router page loads, you can proceed with the port forwarding step.
Access the Router on Mac

Ensure your computer is connected to the internet. Before accessing the router page, make sure your computer has an active internet connection to view the correct address and connect to the router.

Click on System Preferences… from the menu. This will open the System Preferences window.

Click on Network. You’ll find the globe icon in the System Preferences window. The Network window will then appear.

Click on Advanced…. This option is located at the bottom right corner of the window. A new window will open.

Click on the TCP/IP tab. This option is at the top of the window that appears.

Look at the number next to the label "Router." The number displayed to the right of "Router:" is the address of your router.
- This number will be formatted like an IP address, usually starting with 192.168.

Open the router’s page. Enter the default gateway number into the browser's address bar and press ⏎ Return.
- For example, if the default gateway is "192.168.1.1", you will enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar.

Enter the username and password. Skip this step if you are not prompted for them. If you have previously set up security settings for your router (such as during the initial setup), use the username and password you chose at that time. Otherwise, common default login credentials include:
- Linksys router — Enter admin for both username and password.
- Netgear router — Enter admin for the username and password for the password.
- Consult your router's manual to verify the default username and password.
- If you’ve forgotten your login credentials, you will need to reset the router.
- You may also find the username and password on the router’s label.

Wait for the router's setup page to load. Once the page appears, you can proceed with the port forwarding step.
Port Forwarding

Examine the router's interface. Each router has a different webpage, so you'll need to browse through the page to find the port forwarding section. In most cases, the simplest way to find this section is to refer to the router’s manual or online documentation.
- For instance, if you're looking for the port forwarding section on a Linksys router, type linksys port forwarding and locate your router model number from there.
- Try different search methods when looking for options on the router page; if you can't find the "Advanced" option, keep searching—don't give up just yet.

Look for the Port Forwarding section. While each router page differs, the options for configuring port forwarding typically include "Port Forwarding", "Applications", "Gaming", "Virtual Servers", "Firewall", and "Protected Setup".
- Any option that includes the word "Port" is worth exploring.
- If you can't find one of these options or a similar one, try looking under "Advanced Settings" and searching for the Port Forwarding subsection.

Look for preset port forwarding settings. Many routers offer a menu with predefined options for popular applications. If you need to open a port for one of these, simply choose from the "Service Name" or "Application" menu, or a similar option, and save the changes by clicking on Save or the equivalent option.
- For example, Minecraft is a common program that many users opt to forward ports for, so you might find a preset setting for Minecraft here.

Create a custom entry. If the program you wish to add is not in the list, you'll need to create a custom port forwarding entry. While each router might differ slightly, the required information is generally the same:
- Name or Description - Enter a name for the service (like "Minecraft"). This is optional but will help you track your port forwarding rules.
- Type or Service Type - This can be TCP, UDP, or both. If you’re unsure, select Both or TCP/UDP.
- Inbound or Start - Enter the first port number here. You’ll need to check that the port you choose isn’t already used by another service.
- Private or End - Enter the second port number here. If you only wish to open a single port, re-enter the same number. To open a range of ports, enter the final number of the range (for example, entering "23" in the first field and "33" in the second field will open ports from 23 to 33).

Enter your device's private IP address. You’ll need to input this information in the "Private IP" or "Device IP" field. You can find your private IP address on Windows computers or on Mac computers.
- Depending on the router, the device’s IP address might already be entered for you. If so, you can skip this step.

Save your settings. Click on the Save or Apply button. If prompted, you may need to allow the router to reboot in order to apply the changes.
- You should also check the "Enabled" or "On" checkbox next to the port forwarding entry.
Tips
- Disable any extra firewalls on your computer if you're facing issues. Norton Internet Security and similar firewalls may cause problems; it's best to use the default firewall that comes with Windows or Mac.
- Ensure you've entered the correct port numbers. Incorrect port numbers can cause the program to malfunction, so double-check the details carefully.
- Some routers (such as those by D-Link) offer a feature called "Port Triggering" that allows certain games to work without needing to change the IP address. This feature works by monitoring external connections from the game and automatically setting up port forwarding rules for the game’s IP address. Port Triggering must be manually enabled through the router’s home page.
Warnings
- Always use antivirus software, antispyware, and adware protection, and ensure your firewall is active while modifying your router settings.
- Do not open all ports on your router. This could allow hackers to access your computer.
- If your router comes with a default password, make sure to change it. Default passwords pose a security risk.
