Modern mobile technology allows users to connect to the Internet wirelessly anytime there is a data connection available. You can share your phone's internet connection with your laptop through WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB. Most newer phones and laptops can choose any of these connection methods, each with its own benefits.
Steps
Share an iPhone's connection with a laptop

Check your carrier’s plan. Some carriers charge extra fees for data sharing or require you to purchase a data-sharing plan.

Choose a connection method. There are three ways to share your phone's internet connection with your laptop. Here are the requirements for each method:
- WiFi sharing can be done on an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3 or higher. It can connect to any laptop as long as it has WiFi and runs Mac OS 10.4.11 or Windows XP SP2 or later.
- USB sharing can be done on iPhone 3G or newer. You will need a USB cable to connect your iPhone to your laptop. Your computer must have iTunes 8.2 or later and run Mac OS 10.5.7 or Windows XP SP2 or later.
- Bluetooth sharing requires an iPhone 3G or newer. It can connect to a laptop with Bluetooth 2.0, running Mac OS 10.4.11 or Windows XP SP2 or later.

Enable Personal Hotspot. Go to Settings on your iPhone. Toggle the Personal Hotspot slider to "On". Choose the method you want to use (WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB).
- You can find the Personal Hotspot settings in Settings → Cellular; Settings → General → Network; or under the main Settings menu depending on your device.
- When using WiFi, tap the WiFi password button and enter your password. It is recommended to only use ASCII characters.

Connect to shared WiFi. Sharing your WiFi connection is the fastest wireless method but consumes the most battery. To connect from your laptop, simply enable WiFi, select the phone's network, and enter the chosen password. The default network is usually named "iPhone".
- The WiFi sharing will turn off if no devices are connected within 90 seconds.
- If using a 2G mobile network, WiFi will disconnect when you make a call.

Connect via USB. Although not as common due to the need for a cable, USB is the fastest and easiest connection method to set up. Once Personal Hotspot is enabled, simply plug the USB cable into both devices. The connection sharing will automatically occur. If not, try accessing your laptop's network settings and selecting the USB option.
- You will need iTunes installed on your laptop. You can download iTunes for free.

Connect via Bluetooth. Bluetooth is slower than WiFi and can only share the connection with one device at a time. However, it uses less battery. Here's how to set up a Bluetooth connection for your laptop:
- For Mac:
- Go to System Preferences → Bluetooth on your laptop.
- Click "Turn Bluetooth On" or "Set Up a New Device" and follow the on-screen instructions. Select your iPhone from the device list.
- Enter the Pairing Code on your iPhone.
- On some iPhones, you will need to tap "Use Device as a Network Port" after entering the code.
- For Windows 10:
- Select the Action Center icon (speech bubble) on the taskbar and click Bluetooth.
- Click Connect, then select your iPhone.
- Enter the Pairing Code on your iPhone.
- For Windows 7:
- Go to Control Panel → Bluetooth → Bluetooth Settings → Options. Enable Bluetooth discovery and connection.
- Go to Start → Devices and Printers → Add a device. Select your iPhone.
- Enter the Pairing Code on your iPhone.
- For Windows Vista:
- Go to Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Bluetooth Devices → Options. Enable Bluetooth discovery and connection.
- In the Bluetooth Devices menu, click Add, then select your iPhone.
- Enter the Pairing Code on your iPhone.
Share an Android phone's connection with a laptop

Check your data plan. Most mobile carriers charge additional fees for sharing your connection, or the fee may be included in your data limit. Some plans do not allow connection sharing at all.

Ensure compatibility with your device. Android introduced the ability to share connections via WiFi and USB starting with version 2.2. Sharing via Bluetooth requires Android 3.0 or later.
- Your phone model and laptop's operating system must also support connection sharing. This is rarely an issue unless the device is several years old.
- Some older Android devices may need to install apps to enable connection sharing.

Share your connection via WiFi. WiFi offers fast connections and can support up to ten devices. However, it consumes battery quickly. Here's how to set it up:
- Open Settings on your Android phone. Tap More → Tethering & portable hotspot under Wireless settings.
- Turn on "Portable WiFi hotspot".
- A notification will appear for the hotspot. Tap it and select "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot". Enter a password using ASCII characters (you can also enter the network name).
- On your laptop, enable WiFi and select your phone’s network. Enter the chosen password.

Share your internet connection via USB. USB cables provide the fastest connection speeds. However, USB tethering is generally only supported (the standard way) on Windows operating systems. Simply connect the two devices with a USB cable and enable connection sharing on your phone in Settings → More → Tethering & portable hotspot → USB tethering.
- Windows XP users must first download a custom file, following the steps in the Google support page.
- Mac users may need to install third-party drivers on their laptop to enable USB tethering. These drivers are not vetted by Google or Apple, so only install from trusted sources.

Connecting via Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a slower wireless connection method but uses less battery. You can use it to establish an internet connection for a device as follows:
- Activate Bluetooth in the Settings section on your phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your laptop. This can be done in the System Preferences of a Mac, through the action center → Connect on the Windows 10 taskbar, or by searching for "Bluetooth" in the search bar of older versions of Windows.
- On your phone, select the laptop from Available devices. If you can't find it, try tapping "Search for devices" or click on the menu icon and tap "Refresh".
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the devices. You may need to enter a passcode on one of the devices (try 0000 or 1234 if no password appears on the other device).
- On your phone, go to Settings → More → Tethering & portable hotspot → Bluetooth tethering.
Minimize battery drain as much as possible

Disable unnecessary tasks on your phone. Turn off GPS, auto-sync, notifications, updates, and Wi-Fi. The only thing you need is your phone’s network signal.
- If you’re using an Android device, go to Settings → Apps → Running and turn off all apps in use. In All Apps, disable any apps you don’t need, such as Hangouts or Play.
- If you’re using Windows Phone 8.1, enable Battery Saver.

Lower screen brightness. Reduce the brightness on your phone to the minimum level.

Remove the SD card. If possible, remove the SD card from your phone. It can be a major contributor to battery drain on some phones.

Limit your internet usage time. Use the internet for a short duration. If you need to stay online longer, try to stick to checking emails and browsing simple websites. Avoid watching videos, downloading files, or browsing with multiple tabs open.

Reduce your phone's tethering range. Check your phone’s settings to see if there is an option to adjust the tethering range. Lower it to the minimum and keep your phone close to your laptop.

Plug your phone into your laptop. Most modern smartphones can be charged by plugging them into your laptop’s USB port, though you may need to buy a suitable cable. Keep in mind that charging via your laptop is much slower than using a wall socket.
- You can even share your internet connection via USB while charging at the same time.

Buy a portable charger. This device can come in handy when your phone can't be charged via your laptop or when your laptop's battery is low. This is commonly known as a "Power Bank."
- Some providers, like EE in the UK, might offer these for free. Be sure to check your service provider's website before making a purchase.

Carry a spare battery. If your phone has a removable battery, you can double your internet usage time. Don’t forget to charge the spare battery when you’re home.
Advice
- You only need to connect Bluetooth devices once. After that, they will automatically recognize each other.
- If you are unable to connect via Bluetooth, refer to the user manual of your mobile phone.
Warning
- Some phone carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile may disconnect your network if you attempt this while your plan does not allow for connection sharing. Check with your network provider regarding any restrictions on sharing connections.
