Uber is a transportation platform that connects independent drivers and car owners with people in the city who need a ride. To drive with Uber, you need a car and a clean driving record. You must be at least 21 years old to drive for Uber. You can use your own car or sign a contract with Uber to drive a commercial or rental vehicle. Visit the Uber website to apply online.
Steps
Decide to drive

Check if Uber operates in your city. Visit https://www.uber.com/cities to see the updated list of cities where Uber is currently available. As of June 2015, Uber operates in 58 countries and continues to expand. Click on the link to your city to view specific information, including pricing, area boundaries, and opportunities for drivers.
- If you live in a suburban area, check the service area boundaries to ensure you’re within Uber's coverage zone. Each city has geographical boundaries, and if you drive outside the service area, you won’t get ride requests. If you're outside the area, you may need to drive into the city to find work.
- If Uber isn't available where you live, consider checking Lyft or other ride-hailing apps. You might find delivery apps (like Instacart or Postmates), cleaning services apps (like Alfred), or task-based apps (like TaskRabbit). If you're looking to drive passengers, consider applying to traditional taxi services.

Check if you meet the eligibility requirements to drive. You need to be at least 21 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and possess car insurance. Your car must be yours, and you should have a clean driving record with no violations. You will need an iPhone (4S or newer) or an Android phone (2013 or newer), or you can rent a smartphone through Uber. Your vehicle should be from the year 2000 or newer, have 4 doors, and be in good condition. If you don’t own a car, Uber may assist with loans or discounts to help you get one.

Choose the Uber service that best fits your vehicle and needs. Uber offers various pricing models, and whether you qualify for a particular service depends on your car type, location, and experience.
- uberX: UberX is the “low-cost” option, the most common service for the company. You must be at least 21 years old, with a valid driver’s license and personal car insurance. Your vehicle must have 4 doors and be in good working condition. Common vehicles include the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic.
- uberXL: UberXL is “low-cost travel for large groups.” To qualify, your car needs to be larger, and the base fare will be higher compared to uberX. Examples of eligible vehicles include the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.
- UberBLACK: UberBLACK is the “premium” service. You must be a licensed professional driver with commercial insurance to drive for UberBLACK. It has the same base fare as uberXL but allows higher charges per minute and mile. Eligible vehicles include luxury sedans or SUVs with at least 6 comfortable seats, such as the Lincoln Town Car Executive, Toyota Camry, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
- UberSUV: UberSUV is the next premium option after UberBLACK, nearly double the price with higher rates per minute. Examples include the Ford Explorer and GMC Yukon.
- uberTAXI: uberTAXI allows licensed taxi drivers to use their regular taxi service for Uber. You must be a certified taxi driver with a city permit, using a commercial taxi. For example, in the US, you would use a meter fare plus a $1 booking fee (around 22,000 VND). You earn an additional 20% on each trip.
Sign up to drive for Uber.

Go to https://get.uber.com/drive/ to create your account. Look for the registration section on the right side of the page. Fill in your full name, phone number, password (at least five characters), and city. Use the dropdown “Where did you hear about us?” to select the most relevant option for your experience. If you have a referral code from an existing Uber driver, enter it so they can earn a bonus for referring you. After filling out all required fields, click "Next" (Next Step).
- If you plan to drive for uberTAXI or drive a commercial livery vehicle, check the box next to “I plan to drive a livery or taxi vehicle.” If you plan to drive your personal vehicle, simply click "Next" without checking the box.
- To navigate to your personal page, go to Uber’s site and scroll to the dark bar at the bottom. You’ll see the following menu: HOME • CITIES • DRIVE. Click "DRIVE," and you will be redirected to the registration page. Alternatively, you can access the registration page by clicking “Get More Details” under “Drive With Uber” on each specific city page.

Fill in your car details. Make sure your car is from 2000 or newer, has 4 doors, and isn’t heavily damaged (totaled and repaired). Be honest. Uber will conduct a background check, and you’ll be required to provide your license, registration, and insurance details. Once all boxes are checked, click "Continue" (Next Step).
- Your city may require a vehicle model newer than 2000. Check with Uber Movement for your specific location.

Consent to background check. Enter your social security number so Uber can access certain legal documents. You'll need to check a box confirming that you have read, understood, and agree to the Background Check Disclosure available on the page. Take your time to review all the information. When you're ready to continue, click "Continue".
- Uber will be able to access your driving record, vehicle registration, credit history, criminal background, court records, education history, drug test results, past employment records, medical history, and property ownership, among other records. Be sure you’re comfortable with Uber accessing your personal records.
- If you’ve been convicted of any offense, it will show up in the background check. Even some dismissed cases can remain on record for up to seven years.
- You can opt to receive a free copy of your background check report. Even if you’re not leaving Uber, this may be required for some future job opportunities. Are you curious about what potential employers might uncover about you through a background check?
- Some cities require you to have a local license and undergo fingerprinting by the FBI to become an Uber driver, but Uber doesn’t always require these steps. Do your research and stay cautious—ideally, you could bypass the license and fingerprinting if you don’t attract attention from authorities.

Download the app. Click the "Send Download Link" button for iPhone or Android. Your iPhone must be a 4S or newer, and your Android must be from 2013 or newer. Once you click the button, Uber will send you a link to download the appropriate version of the app for your phone, and you’ll be directed to the "Document Upload" section of the application process.
- For example, in the U.S., if you don’t own a smartphone, you can rent one from Uber for $10/week, with a $200 deposit. The phone is strictly for driving purposes. The $10 rental fee will be automatically deducted from your weekly payment. Once you return the phone, you’ll get the $200 deposit back.

Upload images of your documents. You’ll need to upload clear, bright images of your driver’s license, vehicle registration, car insurance, and vehicle inspection form. You’ll also be asked to verify the expiration date for your driver’s license, registration, and insurance. To upload, click "Choose File" and select the camera icon to browse through files on your computer. After uploading everything, click "Save and Continue".
- Take photos with your phone. Send the photos to yourself, open the files on your computer, and upload them.
- Use a camera. Take photos with a camera, transfer them to your computer, and upload the files to Uber’s site.
- Scan documents. Scan your license, registration, insurance, and inspection form using a document scanner or personal scanner. Transfer the files to your computer and upload them to Uber’s site.

Watch the welcome video and wait for feedback. The welcome video will explain the next steps in the onboarding process. If you pass the background check, a local Uber representative will contact you and tell you how to proceed with becoming a driver. Depending on where you live, this process can take anywhere from a few days to 6 weeks. If you’ve already downloaded the app, you might receive an email giving you the green light to start driving. If you need to rent an iPhone from Uber, you may be asked to visit a local Uber office for an in-person meeting.
- Be patient. You still have a chance to succeed until you receive a rejection letter.
- If you don’t hear back within 1-2 weeks, reach out to an Uber representative in your area to follow up on your application. Visit your city’s Uber page for contact information, or ask a driver friend to speak to their manager on your behalf.
- If your driving record includes a few speeding tickets, you still have a good chance of passing the background check. If you’ve been ticketed for running a stop sign, you’ll still pass. However, if you’ve been ticketed for DUI or driving without insurance, your chances of passing are much lower.
Enable location services for Uber

Identify the nearest Uber-approved location. Keep in mind, these spots might not be the most obvious. Call the closest location to you and see if there’s a better option nearby.

Set some time slots and make notes. You’ll need this information more than once.

Ensure you have everything required, as mentioned above.

Speak with the Uber representative on-site. There are likely several ways to register (typically available on a small tablet). Log in before the check begins.

Provide all necessary information and present the proper documentation. Once this step is complete, you’ll need to wait for the background check to be processed.

Take the Defensive Driving Course and the City Knowledge Online Test (if required). Uber will provide you with a URL link to the website or you can easily find it online.

Return to the Uber station after a week or more. They will notify you, but if the email ends up in your spam folder, be sure to check with them to confirm whether it has been completed.

Obtain the Authorization/Certification letter. This is necessary to acquire your business registration license.

Get your business registration license and head back to the Uber station. They will need a copy to add to your records.

Apply the Uber decal on your car door and start driving.
Submit an application to drive commercially.

Consider driving for uberTAXI or UberBlack. You will use your commercial vehicle to drive for Uber alongside any taxi or private driver services you may already provide. As a result, you may be able to request a higher base salary, paid per minute, and per mile, compared to regular Uber drivers.

Visit https://get.uber.com/drive/ to create an account. Fill in your full name, phone number, password (at least 5 characters), and city. Check the box next to "I plan to drive a livery or taxi vehicle." Once you’ve filled in all the required information, click "Next" (Kế Tiếp).
- If you have an invitation code from someone already driving for Uber, enter it: your friend could receive a significant bonus for inviting you.

Register for UberBlack or uberTAXI. You will be prompted to apply for uberX, UberBlack, or uberTAXI, and the page will list various personal and vehicle requirements for each service. Choose the service that best suits your needs, and continue: click "Sign up for uberTAXI" or "Sign up for UberBLACK."

Register to drive for uberTAXI. You will be prompted to enter basic contact information, create an account, and provide details about your company: taxi company/radio association, company name, full address, and vehicle registration. After entering the information, click "Submit."

Sign up for UberBlack. You'll be prompted to enter basic contact information to create an account and provide some company details, including your company name and full address. You'll also be asked to consent to a background check by submitting your license information, date of birth, and social security number. Once you've entered your details, click 'Submit'.

Be patient. After your information has been reviewed, an Uber representative from your city will reach out and guide you through the next steps of the application process. If you've provided clean and accurate information, there's a good chance the company will give you the opportunity to drive. If an Uber team member contacts you, don't hesitate to ask them any questions you might have about the onboarding process.
