After finally getting the hair color you've always wanted, you might notice your hair feels dry and brittle. Fortunately, there are ways to achieve vibrant hair color while keeping your locks soft and smooth. With the right products, proper hair care habits, and possibly some ingredients you already have in your fridge, your newly dyed hair can look silky and beautiful.
Steps
Restore moisture to your hair

Use conditioner immediately after dyeing your hair. Typically, hair dye products come with a matching conditioner. If not, you can use a regular conditioner, apply it generously throughout your hair, leave it on for at least 3 minutes, and rinse with cool water.
- If you dye your hair at a professional salon, consider getting a hair treatment right after the coloring process.
- Be cautious when choosing hair dye products with integrated conditioners, as these often contain stronger ingredients that may be harsher on your hair. Always check the product label carefully.
- After dyeing, avoid washing your hair for 48-72 hours, and try not to get it wet at all. This allows your hair time to recover.

Use deep conditioning treatment. In addition to regular conditioner, you should apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week. If your roots tend to be oily, focus the conditioner on the tips of your hair. Wait a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
- There are also dry conditioners available. If you use dry conditioner, simply dab or spray it onto your damp hair after showering, and you're done!

Wash your hair with warm water first, then rinse with cold water. Warm water opens your hair follicles, while cold water helps close them. In other words, warm water lets your hair absorb moisture, and cold water locks the moisture inside. Your hair will thank you for it!
Maintain a proper hair care routine

Don't wash your hair every day. In fact, washing your hair too frequently can cause it to dry out. Try to avoid washing your hair for a few days if possible (this is why the ponytail was invented, truly!). When you shower, wrap your hair up and wear a shower cap. Even if you don't wash your hair, you still have to shower!
- Everyone has different needs. Some people need to wash their hair every other day, while others only wash it once a week. Pay attention to your scalp: if it feels oily, then wash it. If not, you can save time by taking it easy while preparing for the day!
- If you feel the need to freshen up your hair on non-wash days, simply rinse and apply conditioner.

Use high-quality shampoo and conditioner. Opt for a shampoo that's not too heavy and free from sulfates. If the shampoo contains nourishing oils, even better. And of course, it's perfect for dyed hair too!
- Concentrate the shampoo on your scalp and apply conditioner to the ends. Conditioners often have more oils, so focus on nourishing the ends of your hair instead of the roots, which already produce plenty of oil.

Consider the type of hair dye you're using. Identify which product works best for your needs while causing the least damage to your hair.
- Bleach lightens hair by removing its natural color, but it can also harm your hair by raising the cuticle, making it more prone to tangling. This is why conditioner is essential.
- Temporary or semi-permanent dyes don’t contain bleach, allowing them to lighten your natural hair color with less damage. However, temporary dyes only last for up to 6 weeks, requiring frequent touch-ups that could eventually damage the hair.
- Permanent hair dye lasts much longer, but the chemicals in it (oxidizers and ammonia) can be more damaging to your hair.
- Ammonia-free dyes use less harmful ingredients instead of ammonia. However, using these products too often can still cause damage, similar to permanent dyes.

Try to avoid using heat styling tools whenever possible. These tools will only make your hair drier and more damaged. You may have to sacrifice your hairstyle, but there are alternatives. Hairstyles like ponytails or headbands can hide frizz. Consider this a short-term solution. Put your straightener away and let your hair rest naturally a few days a week. You will notice improvement within a few weeks unless your hair is severely damaged.
- If you must use heat, try lowering the temperature of the curling or straightening tools, and avoid styling the same section multiple times to allow your hair to rest. While it's better not to use heat, this approach will at least reduce some of the damage.

Trim your hair regularly. Typically, when hair is damaged, it’s ideal to trim it every 6-8 weeks. The ends of your hair are usually the most damaged after dyeing, so this is the best way to address the problem. For most people, hair growth slows down after a certain point, and regular trimming can help revitalize the hair.

Eat foods that are good for your hair. You need to maintain a balanced diet every day. Do you know why people on strict diets, weight-loss programs, and fasting don’t have beautiful hair? It’s because what you eat reflects on the outside. If your body isn’t getting enough nutrients to function properly, it certainly won’t give you healthy hair! Therefore, make sure to get enough protein, zinc, iron, vitamins, and minerals to keep your skin, hair, and nails healthy.
- Drinking plenty of water also helps. Just like apple cider vinegar cleanses hair, water detoxifies your entire body. The more hydrated you are, the healthier you’ll feel.
Use at-home moisturizing products

Use eggs. The protein and lecithin in eggs provide excellent hydration for your hair, from root to tip. Eggs also help strengthen hair and prevent breakage. Here’s how to turn this breakfast ingredient into a homemade hair softener:
- Mix 3 eggs with 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of coconut or olive oil. Apply a generous amount of the mixture to your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash thoroughly and let your hair air dry.
- Mix half a cup of yogurt, 2 tablespoons of almond oil, and 2 beaten eggs to form a smooth paste. Apply this mixture all over your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes and follow up with your usual conditioner.
- Mayonnaise also works, but your hair will smell like a deli afterward.

Condition your hair with oils. Olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, and almond oil are some of the best options. Adding a few drops of essential oil won’t hurt either. Simply add a few drops of oil to your palm, rub your hands together, and apply it to your hair, or you can warm the oil in the microwave.
- If you're being cautious, heat 4 tablespoons of oil on the stove. Once the oil is warm (but not too hot), remove it from the heat and drizzle it over your hair. Rub the oil through your hair and cover your hair with a warm towel for maximum effectiveness.
- Use coconut oil. Microwave the coconut oil until it melts, let it cool slightly so it’s bearable to touch. Massage the warm oil into your hair thoroughly. Leave it on for 4-5 hours (or as long as you prefer), then rinse out.

Soften your hair with honey. Apply this sweet ingredient to your hair, leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse out, or mix honey with avocado and eggs to create a thicker paste. Use this deep conditioning treatment once a week.
- Another option is to simply add honey to your regular shampoo!

Mash some avocado and banana. Bananas help strengthen your hair, and the avocado continues to nourish, making your hair soft and shiny. For enhanced results, you can add 1-2 teaspoons of oil (any of the oils mentioned earlier). Mix everything together, apply the mixture to your hair, and leave it on for 30-60 minutes.

Rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar. While apple cider vinegar helps restore hair health rather than providing moisture, it is a home remedy that addresses many issues. It can help balance your hair's pH and remove harmful product buildup. Essentially, vinegar acts as a cleanser for your delicate hair.
- Mix apple cider vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio and pour it over your hair. Leave the vinegar on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Continue your regular hair care routine.
