Slime is a stretchy, glossy toy that makes playful sounds, making it perfect for stress relief. However, when you take it out of its container, you might find it as hard as a rock. Don’t worry, there are several ways to restore your slime to its original state.
Steps
Use basic methods to soften the slime

Add a little water. Simple, yet effective. Some types of slime can be revived with just this method. Place the slime in a bowl and add a small amount of water—just a tablespoon is enough. Then knead until the slime becomes soft.
- Keep in mind that water can either improve or ruin the slime. Add only a little if you don’t want your slime to become too runny.

Add a few drops of hand sanitizer. Another method to soften slime is by adding one or two drops of hand sanitizer. You can choose any brand you like. Place the slime in a bowl and drop in the hand sanitizer. Stir with a spoon to allow the sanitizer to soak into the slime. Then, knead it until the slime softens. Now your slime is also antibacterial (though only for a short period of time).
- If the slime is still not soft enough, feel free to add more hand sanitizer.
Soften slime with lotion. Lotion not only keeps your skin soft but can also have a similar effect on slime. Try it out! Just add one or two tablespoons of lotion into a bowl (about 4 to 5 sprays if you're using a pump bottle). Add a little water and mix both ingredients together. Now for the fun part: Place the slime into the bowl and press it into the mixture. Once the slime is fully coated with lotion, take it out and knead by hand until it softens.

Add more glue. If you made your slime with a recipe that uses glue, Borax, laundry detergent, or liquid starch, adding more glue can help restore it. Add one tablespoon of glue at a time and knead until the slime softens.
- Make sure to use the same type of glue that was used in your slime. For example, avoid using school glue in clear slime.
Soften slime with heat
Soak the slime in warm water. Pour some warm water into a bowl and place the slime inside. You can use your hands to swirl the slime in the water. Let it sit in the water for about a minute. It may seem like the slime is separating, but don’t worry—it’s perfectly fine.

Heat the slime in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Remove the slime from the water and squeeze it to dry off any moisture. Place the slime in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Afterward, take it out and let it cool for a minute to avoid burning your hands.
Add a little moisturizing lotion to make the slime softer. Use one or two tablespoons of lotion. Any brand will do. If you use scented lotion, your slime will have the same fragrance. Dip the slime into the lotion with your hands. That’s it! You've just revived the dry part of your slime.
- If the slime seems too runny, you can add a thickening agent. A thickening agent can be anything you used in the original slime recipe, like half a teaspoon of Borax dissolved in a cup of water.
