Nothing beats a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day. Many kids have earned money by selling lemonade during the summer months. Finding the perfect spot and promoting your lemonade stand are two of the most effective ways to increase your sales. However, the key to success lies in offering fresh, delicious drinks like lemonade to keep customers coming back. You might also consider adding a few extra items to satisfy your customers and encourage them to refer you to their friends.
Steps
Plan Ahead

Choose a location for your stand. Do you know the local regulations regarding where you can set up your stand? Before you start, make sure that your stand complies with any rules or regulations. To find out if you can legally set up a stand, check if you need a permit or must adhere to any specific guidelines.
- Get your parents’ permission before setting up the stand. In many places, you’ll need their approval first.
- Alternatively, you can contact the local Business Support Office to gather more information.

Pick a high-traffic area. If you live in a cul-de-sac, it's better to choose a location with more foot traffic. Busy intersections are usually better spots than one-way streets. Make sure the location is safe. Avoid setting up too close to the road.
- Consider setting up in front of your house. This works well if you live on a busy street.
- Be cautious about setting up in parks or at outdoor sporting events. Some areas have regulations that prohibit setting up stands in these locations.

Invite other kids to join you. You can ask a friend to help you so you can share the workload. Plus, it’s more fun to work together.
- If you plan to sell all day, make sure you trust your partner not to take the money when you switch shifts. An untrustworthy business partner can ruin your lemonade stand.

Prepare drinks and snacks for the stand workers (including yourself and possibly others). If you’re selling all day, you’ll get thirsty and may drink all your lemonade and snacks meant for the stand (unless you prepare ahead of time).

Consider your pricing. If you use fresh lemons, clean ice, and large cups, you can charge around 20,000 VND per cup. If you use a powdered mix and smaller cups, people are unlikely to pay more than 5,000 to 10,000 VND. Generally, whether you sell for a high or low price, you won’t make much money from your lemonade stand. Be sure to have some small change for customers.

Create a sign. Use a poster board and markers to make a large, eye-catching sign for your stand. The sign should clearly state what you're selling and how much it costs. Write neatly and use fun lettering. You can also draw some lemons or a glass of lemonade to make the sign more appealing.
- Consider making a few flyers to post around the area and let people know where they can buy lemonade.
- If you do this, remember to take down the flyers when you close your stand.

Plan exactly what to sell. You could offer the following items:
- Lemonade in various flavors
- Other beverages (like soda)
- Snacks (either homemade or pre-made), like cookies

Equip your stand with necessary supplies. If it’s very sunny, set up a tarp and arrange tables and chairs for your customers. This will make your stand much more inviting. If possible, consider adding a large TV or tablet so customers can enjoy sports or news programs. Be creative to attract more customers!
Set up the Stand

Set up folding tables and chairs. The table should be large enough to hold the lemonade jug, cups, napkins, and any additional items. Set up chairs for anyone helping you at the stand. To attract more customers, use a nice (but not too flashy) tablecloth and place a sign in the front. Bright colors will catch people’s attention and make them consider buying something from your stand.

Prepare the lemonade. There are many ways to make lemonade. It’s definitely worth experimenting to find the best recipe that will impress your customers. Always taste it before serving to ensure it’s the right mix of sweet and sour. Don’t forget to add ice for that refreshing chill. Here are three ways to make lemonade:
- With fresh lemons. For 4 liters of lemonade, you’ll need 2 cups of fresh lemon juice and 2 cups of sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
- With concentrated lemon juice. You can buy frozen concentrated lemon juice in the frozen section of the store. Mix it with water according to the instructions on the packaging.
- With lemon powder. Purchase lemon powder and follow the instructions to dissolve it in cold water.

Avoid using disposable cups or paper towels. The most common option is to use small paper cups, but they are harmful to the environment since they pollute the air when burned at waste treatment plants. Ask your parents if there are any old cups in the house, bring along water and dishcloths to the stand, and find a nearby public tap to wash cups when you run out of clean ones. Don’t let customers use paper towels; instead, direct them to the nearest water tap or public restroom. Make sure to wash used cups, or customers won’t return.

Consider selling additional items if you wish. Why stop at just lemonade? Since your stand is already set up, why not sell a few more items? It can be fun to offer cookies, chocolate bars, and other baked goods. You could also offer different drinks like strawberry lemonade, iced tea, or fruit juices, which your customers might also enjoy. Some websites allow you to register and prepare for a lemonade or baked goods stand, and you can donate a portion of your earnings to help those in need.
Sell Lemonade

Engage with passersby. If you just sit there silently, people may feel unwelcome and might not want to buy your lemonade. Instead, smile and ask, “Would you like a cup of lemonade?” This will draw attention and encourage more people to buy. Be prepared with a few responses to customer questions. Speak loudly enough for them to hear you. Even if they don’t want to buy, make sure to say “Have a great day!” as they pass by.

Be polite. People won’t want to buy anything if you seem angry or annoyed with them. If they are with children, engage with them or offer a compliment. If it's an adult, be friendly, polite, and true to yourself. If they decide not to buy, just smile and politely say “Have a great day!”

Act professionally and respectfully. When a customer orders lemonade, pour it carefully into a cup and hand it to them along with a napkin. Once the customer has their drink, your role is to collect the payment, place it in the cash box, and don’t forget to say, “Thank you.” If you’re lucky, they may tell their friends about your stand. Always remember to treat customers courteously. There’s a common saying, “The customer is always right.” While there may be exceptions to this rule (such as when a customer demands to fire a good employee), in general, it holds true in most situations.
Advice
Warnings
- Make sure you don’t sell at prices that are too high or too low. You want to make a profit, right? Price your cups between 5,000đ – 15,000đ and your baked goods between 20,000đ – 50,000đ (if you’re offering them).
- If you’re baking, ensure you follow the recipe carefully. Always taste the baked goods before selling them.
- Store the money securely. It’s advisable to use a locked cash box and have two people managing the stand at the same time.
- Test the lemonade. The lemons you’re using to make the lemonade may be past their prime without you realizing it. Always taste your lemonade after preparation to ensure it’s perfectly refreshing.
