Many people dream of having smooth, straight hair but want to avoid the damage that often comes with using heat tools. Fortunately, there are several ways to straighten your hair without causing harm, and some methods can even make your hair stronger and healthier. Start by switching to a shampoo and conditioner specifically designed to straighten hair. Using a hair mask once or twice a week will also hydrate your hair and reduce curl. For longer hair, you can straighten it overnight by rolling it up in large hair rollers; this will help set your hair in a straighter shape.
Steps
Change Your Hair Care Routine

Use Straightening Shampoo and Conditioner. Begin your hair straightening process by reconsidering the products you use regularly. Switch to a shampoo and conditioner designed for straightening and smoothing hair if you haven’t already. These products have deep-moisturizing formulas that help loosen curls and make your hair straighter.

Use a Highly Absorbent Towel. Since you're aiming to avoid heat styling, using the right towel to dry your hair is essential. Instead of using an old towel, opt for one made of microfiber or other highly absorbent materials. These towels are designed to soak up moisture without frizzing up your hair.

Change How You Dry Your Hair with a Towel. Gently drying your hair with a towel is crucial, as rough rubbing can lead to frizz. Wrap the absorbent towel around the ends of your hair to absorb moisture, then slowly work your way up to continue drying. Next, lightly use the towel to detangle your hair, ensuring you don’t rub it too hard, especially if you have long hair.

Blow Dry on Cool Mode and Comb with a Paddle Brush. Blow-drying hair with heat not only causes damage but also leads to frizz and curls. Instead of using hot air, apply a towel to absorb the moisture and then use the cool setting on your blow dryer while combing with a paddle brush.
- Blow-drying on cool mode typically takes longer than using heat, so keep this in mind if you’re in a hurry or have limited time in the morning.

Comb Your Hair Until Dry. If you prefer not to use a blow dryer, gently pat your hair dry with a towel and continue combing until it dries. This process helps separate the hair strands, reducing moisture. Additionally, it helps straighten the hair because the gentle pulling prevents your hair from curling back as it usually does.
- If you don’t want to comb constantly, take breaks by combing every five minutes to let your hair air dry.

Use Smoothing Products. Once your hair is nearly dry, apply a smoothing cream or mousse to eliminate frizz and waves. Look for products with natural smoothing ingredients like coconut oil or jojoba oil to help straighten your hair.
Use a Hair Straightening Mask

Make a Milk and Honey Mask. This mask is made by mixing 1 cup (240 ml) of full-fat milk or coconut milk with 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey. Use your hands to apply the mixture evenly throughout your hair. Next, put on a shower cap and wait for about 1 hour for the mask to soak into your hair, then rinse your hair with water.
- You will notice the effects of the hair mask when used once or twice a week.
- This is a liquid mask, so it’s best to apply the mixture over a sink.

Make a Milk and Egg Mask. You can create another type of milk mask by combining it with an egg. Mix 2 cups (480 ml) of full-fat milk or coconut milk with 1 egg in a large bowl and stir until the egg yolk dissolves. Place the bowl in the sink or on a table, sit in front of it, and dip your hair into the bowl for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, gather your hair but don't wring out the water, and tie your hair up if it’s long. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap and leave the mask to soak into your hair for 30 minutes. Then remove the wrap and rinse your hair with cold water to avoid cooking the egg.
- The plastic wrap helps keep the mask on your hair, and the warmth helps the mask soak in.

Use a Coconut Milk and Lemon Juice Mask. To make a hair mask with coconut milk and lemon juice, mix 1 cup (240 ml) of coconut milk, 6 tablespoons (about 90 ml) of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) of olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir well and heat the mixture in the microwave for about 20 seconds, then stir again. Repeat this process until the mixture thickens. Allow it to cool, then use your fingers to apply the mixture evenly throughout your hair. Leave it on for 1 hour, then rinse your hair with water.
Straighten Long Hair Overnight

Use Hair Ties to Straighten Hair. You can dampen your hair either during a shower or quickly at the sink. Divide your hair into two sections and tie each section into a low ponytail close to the nape. Then, take another pair of hair ties and loosely tie them about 5 cm apart along the length of the hair. Continue this process until all the hair is tied. In the morning, simply remove the hair ties, and you’ll have straighter hair.
- Be sure not to tie your hair too tightly, as this can leave marks or cause breakage.
- If you have curly hair, this method may reduce some of the curls but won't completely straighten your hair.

Use Large Rollers to Straighten Hair. Divide your hair into 6 sections and roll each section onto a large roller, bringing it all the way to the roots. Secure the rollers with large clips to hold them in place. In the morning, remove the rollers and comb your hair, and you'll notice your hair appears straighter.
- Try using plastic rollers instead of Velcro or foam types for better results.

Twist Hair into a Bun. If your hair is already straight or only slightly wavy, you can twist damp hair into a bun and let it air dry. Start by towel-drying your hair, then tie it into a ponytail. Next, twist the ponytail around the base to form a bun, securing it with a hair tie. Let your hair dry, and once it’s dry, remove the tie and brush through your hair.

Wrap Damp Hair Around Your Head Until Dry. Another method to straighten hair is to wrap damp hair around your head and secure it with bobby pins. Start by parting your hair down the middle, then comb one side and cross it over the top of your head to the opposite side. Wrap the hair around your head until it’s all wrapped, then secure it with bobby pins. Repeat the same process for the other side, securing the hair in place.
- After pinning, wrap a silk scarf around your head to reduce frizz while you sleep. In the morning, remove the pins and enjoy your straighter hair.
