Kinky curls are a feminine hairstyle made from natural or artificial curly locks. This style is considered "safe" due to its natural appearance, as it doesn't require harsh chemicals or heat styling tools. Instead, you use hair extensions to wrap around the head, creating a full and even-looking hairstyle. The following article will guide you through creating kinky curls as well as tips for protecting your natural curls.
Steps
Purchase Hair Extensions

Check out different types of hair extensions at beauty supply stores. If your hair is naturally curly or artificially curled, you should choose curly hair extensions.
- Once you've found your preferred type, instead of buying them in-store, you can order online or directly from manufacturers to get better pricing.
Purchase 3 to 4 bundles of hair extensions. The length of the extensions should match the length of your natural hair. For example, if you have medium-length hair, you should choose extensions that are about 60 cm long, and if your hair is longer, the extensions should be longer as well.
Brush Your Hair

Since no one wants to start with tangled hair, begin by brushing your hair until all knots are gone.

Use a comb to section your hair into smaller parts. A long comb with a pointed handle will work perfectly for dividing the hair into equal sections.
- Some advice suggests starting from the back and bottom of the head, gradually working towards the front. However, if this is your first time trying this hairstyle, you can begin at the front or practice on someone else until you feel confident.

Use hair clips to separate the sections of hair
Prepare the Materials

Shampoo and condition your hair. Your hair should be slightly damp to ensure the curls form tightly, minimizing damage.
- You can blow-dry your hair after washing and conditioning to give it a smoother look.

If you plan to create kinky curls for yourself, make sure to sit in front of a mirror to do the process.

Cut the hair extensions from the head of the bundle. You can gather the strands together to keep the hair straight. Cut just below the base (where the strands are tied together) and discard the straight ends of the bundle.

Though not absolutely necessary, it’s helpful to prepare a jar of shea butter or leave-in conditioner. When working on each section, apply a little shea butter or leave-in conditioner to keep the hair soft and smooth.
Start Curling the Hair

Take a bundle of hair extensions and fold it in half so that both sides are even, making it easier to work with.

Place the folded part of the extensions directly on the section of your natural hair where you want to curl.
Divide the section of hair you want to curl into two separate parts. Instead of using a comb, use your fingers to separate the sections more precisely.

Align the hair extensions with your natural hair. It’s best to divide the section into two parts, each with half natural hair and half extensions for a seamless look.

Place a finger between the two sections of hair to help keep the hair extensions in place, preventing them from shifting.
- If you find it difficult to maintain the position of the extensions while twisting, try braiding them into your natural hair first. Secure both sides of the hair and braid the two sections of extensions into a 2.5 cm section of natural hair. Then, divide your natural hair into parts of extensions and start curling.

Position both hands close to the base of the hair and start twisting the right section of hair from left to right, making 5 to 7 tight twists.

Use your ring finger and pinky on your right hand to firmly hold the right section of hair.

Repeat the same process on the left section of hair. Twist it tightly about 5 to 7 times.

Hold the two twisted sections firmly and cross them over each other, continuing the twist until the ends of the hair are reached.

After curling the hair strands together, twist the smaller sections tightly to the right. Then, curl to the left and twist the individual sections to the right. Continue this process until you reach the ends of the hair.

Repeat this action on the smaller sections of hair. Start from the bottom of your head and gradually work your way up to the crown. You can keep the hair extensions balanced as you go along.
Secure the Ends of the Hair

Depending on whether you want to set your curls with styling products or hot water, you can choose accordingly. Hot water works well with synthetic hair extensions.
- If you are using natural hair or just your real hair to create kinky curls, a gel styling product will be sufficient in the final step. Use your fingers to roll and twist the ends of your hair.
- For synthetic extensions, use a kettle of boiling water. To avoid burns, wrap a towel around your neck and body. Pour boiling water into a coffee mug, dip 3 or 4 sections in at once, and leave them for 20 seconds. Remove and gently blot with a towel. Repeat with the remaining sections.

Moisturizing is an effective way to protect your hair. Many people use leave-in conditioners, hair lotions, and avocado oil to prevent their hair from becoming dry or damaged.
- Wrap a satin scarf around your head or sleep on a satin pillowcase to minimize damage and keep your hair smooth.
