Although some professional facial massage services at large spa centers may offer a rejuvenating skin experience and relaxation, the costs here are certainly not cheap. Fortunately, facial care at home is also an affordable option that can help remove impurities and dead skin cells, balance dry or oily areas, improve blood circulation, and refresh dull, tired skin. Moreover, you can easily find the products you need in your medicine cabinet and try natural skincare treatments using ingredients from your kitchen. This article will briefly introduce how to massage someone's face. For more detailed guides on facial beauty care for yourself, check out other articles on our site. Now, let's take care of each other's skin, so you and your friend can enjoy the self-care experience together!
Steps
Cleanse the Skin

Start with clean hands. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Bacteria and dirt on your hands can cause breakouts or skin allergies.
- If possible, avoid using scented soaps or perfumes. Some fragrances may contain allergens, which could irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions.

Pull all of your friend's hair back. Use a hair tie to secure the long hair at the back. Meanwhile, a headband will help hold the bangs or shorter hair in place so they don’t fall into the face. Of course, ensure that only the face is exposed for the most effective skincare method.

Ask your friend to lie down while facing you. Prop her head up with a soft pillow to ensure she feels comfortable and relaxed.
- Consider minimizing distractions by turning off the TV and mobile phones. You can also play some soft, relaxing music if you wish.

Remove makeup. Soak a cotton pad with makeup remover and gently cleanse the eye area, lips, entire face, and neck. You will need several cotton pads for this process.
- For all facial care steps, never be harsh or scrub the skin. Instead, use gentle motions, especially around the eyes, as the skin in that area is thin and sensitive.

Apply a gentle facial cleanser. Choose a cleanser depending on your skin type (e.g., oily, dry, sensitive, normal, acne-prone, or aging skin). According to dermatologists, opt for one without alcohol, as this ingredient can cause irritation or itching. Dispense an adequate amount into your palms, rub them together, and evenly distribute the cleanser before applying it to the face. Use your fingertips to gently massage in circular motions, starting from the chin and gradually working upwards.

Use an ultrasonic facial cleansing brush. If you have the budget for an automatic facial brush, don’t forget to use it for a deeper cleanse. These battery-operated brushes typically have soft bristles and provide a gentle scrub, making them perfect for facial care. The ultrasonic technology is also used to exfoliate and remove impurities deep within the pores. Be sure to read the product instructions, as the market offers a wide variety of options.

Rinse off the facial cleanser. This step can be done using a clean, wet washcloth or cotton pad.

Gently pat the skin until dry. Use a dry and clean towel for this step. Never rub the skin harshly, as this could cause irritation and discomfort.
Exfoliate the Skin

Apply an exfoliating cream. Take a sufficient amount of exfoliating cream in your palms, then rub your hands together, just like you did with the facial cleanser. Gently apply the cream to the face and neck in circular motions; however, avoid the area around the eyes (below the eyebrows and above the eye socket). Be gentle when massaging, as there is no need to apply too much pressure.
- This exfoliating cream helps remove dead skin cells that are tightly packed on the skin’s surface. The result is smoother and fresher skin thanks to the healthy new skin cells.
- If you don’t have an exfoliating cream, you can create a gentle homemade scrub (check out other articles on our site) by mixing a tablespoon of sugar.

Exfoliate with a natural enzyme peel mask. Prepare about 6 strawberries and 1/4 cup of milk (60 ml). Blend everything in a blender. Then, massage your face as you did in Step 1.
- The enzymes in the strawberries will break down dead skin cells, while the milk will help smooth the skin.
- Do not use both the enzyme peel mask and exfoliating cream at the same time, as it could over-exfoliate the skin and cause damage.

Steam your face with a warm towel. Soak a small clean towel in hot water, then place it on your face and leave it for about 5 minutes.
- If you have sensitive skin or are prone to red pimples, you may skip this step as steaming could aggravate these conditions.

Cleanse your skin. Use a clean, soft towel dipped in room-temperature water or a cotton pad to gently wipe your skin.

Gently pat your face until dry. Use a clean bath towel to complete this step.
Deep Cleanse Your Face with a Nourishing Mask

Apply a facial mask. Spread a thin, smooth layer of the mask over your face, avoiding the delicate area around the eyes. There are many types of masks available; however, you should choose one that suits your friend's skin needs. You can use a store-bought mask or create your own at home.
- For oily or acne-prone skin: Mash 1/2 cup of blueberries (about 50g), then mix with 2 tablespoons of yogurt (with live probiotics), 1 tablespoon of rice flour, and 1 tablespoon of witch hazel. Apply this mask for 15 minutes.
- For dry skin: Mash half an avocado and mix it with 1 tablespoon of yogurt (with live probiotics), 1/2 teaspoon of honey, and 1/2 teaspoon of essential oil (such as olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil). Apply this mask for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- To tighten pores, try applying an egg white mask by mixing raw egg white with 5 drops of lemon juice and a bit of mayonnaise. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes.

Timing the mask application. The mask should stay on the skin for about 15 minutes, though this duration may vary depending on the type of mask you're using.
- Add two cucumber slices on your friend's eyes to soothe and reduce puffiness around the eyes.
- Let the mask dry naturally, but avoid letting it dry to the point where it cracks and crumbles.

Steam with a clean washcloth. Similar to the exfoliation stage, soak a clean towel in hot water and place it over the face. Remove the towel after about 5 minutes.
- As mentioned earlier, skip this steaming step if the skin is prone to acne or sensitivity.

Remove the mask. Wet a clean washcloth with room temperature water and gently remove the mask.

Gently pat the face dry. Use a clean, dry towel and allow the skin to remain slightly damp.

Apply toner. Pour a small amount of toner (a skin-tightening solution) onto a cotton pad and gently swipe it across the face. Toner helps restore and improve skin health with its antioxidant properties and deep nourishment. It is generally applied after cleansing and before moisturizing. Many types of toner are available on the market and can also be homemade. Choose one that suits your friend's skin type. Whatever you choose, ensure it is alcohol-free, as alcohol can create free radicals that damage the skin's collagen production ability.
- For oily skin, consider using witch hazel extract.
- For dry or sensitive skin, almond oil may be a good option for firming the skin.
- For acne-prone skin, you can create your own rose water by mixing 3/4 cup of strong brewed tea (177 ml) and 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar (60 ml). Green tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, while apple cider vinegar helps restore the skin’s natural pH balance.
Complete the Process by Applying Moisturizer

Apply moisturizer in upward strokes. Use the regular moisturizer that your friend usually applies, paying attention to how you apply it. Start from the neck area and gently massage it upwards toward the forehead. This upward motion enhances blood circulation, and the moisturizer will lock in hydration on the skin as you finish.
- According to dermatologists, it's advisable to choose a moisturizer with broad-spectrum sun protection (with SPF 30), especially if your friend plans to go outside. Otherwise, let the skin relax with an SPF-free hydrating cream.

Tell your friend to stay indoors for at least an hour. Her skin is likely to be very sensitive after the skincare process, so the best advice is to allow her skin to rest and recover without exposure to sunlight, extreme weather, or pollutants.

Advise her to avoid makeup for the remainder of the day. As mentioned earlier, her skin is in a sensitive state, so it's best to let her skin breathe and rejuvenate without makeup for the day.

Repeat the skincare process once every 1 to 2 weeks. When combined with a regular skincare routine, deep hydration treatments will help maintain and improve skin health over time.
Advice
- If you're planning to care for someone's skin at home, make sure she brings along her usual skincare products, like her favorite cleanser and moisturizer. This will help her avoid any unwanted side effects from trying new products.
Warning
- Plan skincare treatments well in advance of any special event. Her skin might become red or sensitive after this deep treatment, so it's best to perform the procedure at least one day before the event.
- Check if her skin reacts to the new products or natural methods used. If she experiences pain or discomfort, rinse her face with warm water to remove the product residue and give her skin some time to rest.
