Everyone wants to enjoy good health, happiness, job satisfaction, self-acceptance, respect, and positive relationships. If you feel that your life is hectic, monotonous, or incomplete, it’s time to regain control. Anything of value in life requires time, effort, focus, and often brings challenges along the way. Become the person you aspire to be and live the life you dream of by shifting your mindset, adjusting your lifestyle, and working more efficiently.
Steps
Change your mindset

Defining control. Reflect on what taking control of your life means to you. Is it the ability to influence your destiny, change your habits, control your negative behaviors, or simply a desire to strengthen your willpower? Self-control requires overcoming many challenges, including self-awareness, building confidence, and taking action. Identify what aspects you want to have more control over, and this will help you focus your energy.

Accepting Yourself. The first step toward success in anything is accepting both your strengths and weaknesses. Be compassionate with yourself. Embrace not only your positive traits but also your flaws. Always strive to improve things you dislike or are struggling with.
- Understand the reasons behind your actions and forgive yourself. Self-reflection is a healthy and positive practice. Self-criticism and guilt are counterproductive, causing more harm than good. If you find yourself acting in these ways, remind yourself that there are healthier ways to address challenges. Understand that you have done your best, and repeat this to yourself.
- Think about three areas where you excel and receive praise or things that truly excite you. Write them down and place them in spots you frequent, like your bathroom or on your fridge.

Reflect on your values. You must understand your standards to prioritize the right things. Think about the values and people that are important to you – is it freedom, happiness, justice, money, or family? Write down a list of your core values (at least 10), ranked from most to least important.
- Think about what you're doing to support each value and how it impacts your life. An insightful exercise is to imagine what someone you respect would think about your values and whether this would change any of your priorities.
- Identify what actions you need to take to build self-esteem and bring satisfaction to your life. Think about the person you want to become, and the qualities, mindset, behaviors, and lifestyle of that person.
Develop positive qualities. By cultivating good qualities and traits, you’ll have better control over your life, as these traits will help you achieve your goals and develop the characteristics you desire. Traits that serve this purpose include courage, moderation, wisdom, and self-discipline.
- Courage means putting all your strength and will into achieving what you need or want, despite any obstacles. This could involve taking risks in business, excelling in school, or performing selfless acts that set you apart. Courage contrasts with fear, and you can cultivate it by allowing yourself to be vulnerable, acknowledging your fears, confronting what scares you, and consistently taking courageous actions.
- Moderation is crucial as it helps you maintain perspective, calmness, and self-control. For example, refraining from arrogance by practicing humility can prevent your relationships from deteriorating.
- Wisdom encourages you to accumulate knowledge and experience to use information for higher purposes, like serving humanity or living a noble life. You’ll gain wisdom through trial and error, new experiences, and a thirst for knowledge.
- Self-discipline is essential for taking control of your life, as it allows you to turn intentions into actions. This skill develops over time by accomplishing small goals on your path to a greater vision. Always imagine achieving your goals, and practice self-control every day by making small changes and sticking to them, even as simple as using your left hand to open every door. Success in these small changes will make larger transformations easier.

Identify what motivates you. Many of us have a passion – something we love that drives us toward success. Think about what you want to do in life if there were no obstacles. If you can’t figure it out, perhaps you need to write down activities that bring you satisfaction. Consider what inspires you, as well as your skills and talents.

Set Your Goals. Identify what you truly want to achieve this year – a house, a great job, or a healthy relationship? Write down each goal, then brainstorm ideas that can help you achieve them. Record these ideas along with positive action affirmations like, “I will save money.” Afterward, review all your goals and ideas, and identify three key goals and three action-driven affirmations for each task you will work on.

Master Your Emotions. Emotions can be powerful, but inappropriate expressions can hinder your progress and damage your relationships. It's essential to learn how to understand, manage, and respond to your feelings in a healthy, constructive way.
- Use deep breathing and relaxation techniques to calm yourself before reacting in a situation.
- Breathe in for five seconds, hold your breath for five seconds, and exhale for five seconds. Repeat until you feel your heart rate slow and your tension decrease.
- Find healthy outlets like talking to someone, journaling, or engaging in activities like martial arts.

Let Go of the Burdens. Sometimes it’s tough to forget negative thoughts or experiences – you might feel that they define you, or you’re afraid to let go of them because they’ve become too familiar. But you need to understand that those issues do not belong to you, and they do not determine your worth or the choices you make now. Learning to release past burdens will help you find solutions, expand your perspective, and regain control over your life.
- Practice mindfulness. One way to release the past is to focus on the present. When practicing mindfulness, you actively focus on the present moment – your body’s sensations, the feeling of sunlight on your face – just observing. Instead of judging your thoughts (or yourself), you merely observe and acknowledge them. Mindfulness takes practice, but the benefits can be profound.
- Make amends. If you’re haunted by past mistakes, taking steps to make amends can help lighten your heart. If you feel bad about teasing your sister, you could meet her (in person or through a letter), apologize for your actions, and give her a chance to express how she feels. Note that making amends might not heal a broken relationship, but it can help you move past the past and continue moving forward.
Lifestyle Changes

Be Independent. If you rely on others emotionally, for lifestyle choices, or need someone to tell you what to do, then you’re not in control of your life. Learn how to solve problems on your own, and take time to think and reflect. Only seek help when truly needed and learn from those who assist you, so next time you can handle more on your own.
- Learn to meet your own needs. Find a job that allows you to support yourself if you separate from someone. Then move out and live independently.
- Ask yourself, “What do I want to do today?” and decide for yourself. Think about things you love and are passionate about. Don’t rely on others to tell you what to do or like.

Live Organized. Organization is key to taking control of your life. When everything around you is chaotic—both in your home and in your mind—it can be hard to figure out where to start when solving a problem. Strive to keep things neat at home and at work so you don't have to deal with a messy environment. Make a list, use a calendar, and try to make decisions right away rather than procrastinating.
- Read documents, emails, and letters immediately and take action—whether it's throwing something away, paying a bill, or responding to a letter.
- Set a schedule for your daily tasks throughout the week, such as shopping, family time, appointments, to-do lists, etc.
- Get rid of things you haven’t used in the last six months. Don’t hold on to items just because you might use them in the future.
- Focus on organizing one area at a time, especially small spaces like a drawer, and tidy those before moving on to other areas.

Take time to care for your appearance. Investing effort into your appearance can bring a sense of satisfaction and greater control over how others see you. Get a haircut, dye your hair, or try a new hairstyle. Buy or borrow a few new outfits, and remember to smile whenever possible. However, it's also important to be mindful of the money you spend to keep your finances under control.

Take care of yourself. Pay attention to what you eat, the portion sizes, and aim to exercise every day. To boost your energy, eat smaller portions of energy-rich foods throughout the day (every 3 hours). These foods include lean proteins (meat, beans) and complex carbohydrates (whole grains, fruits, and vegetables). Avoid sugary, fatty, overly processed, or salty foods, as they can leave you feeling unwell and lacking the energy needed to take control of your life.

Prioritize your sleep. When you're tired, you won’t have the energy to stay in control or handle anything beyond the basics. Managing your life requires you to stay alert and aware of what's happening, and to have a clear sense of where you want to go. Sleep according to your needs until you feel refreshed upon waking—typically around 8 hours. Begin relaxing at least 30 minutes before bedtime, establish a routine (e.g., drink warm tea, brush your teeth, go to bed), and try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day.

Build positive relationships. Surround yourself with people who share similar values and goals. Seek out individuals you admire and spend time with them, so their behavior can have a positive influence on you. Meet new people at places or events that align with your values and goals. Communicate with those close to you and take advantage of their support to gain more control over your life.
- Express your desires and needs clearly, ensuring mutual understanding. Listen actively and work towards mutually beneficial solutions. Always show appreciation towards others.

Simplify Your Tasks. If you feel like you're constantly racing against time in an endless marathon to fulfill your responsibilities, being pulled in multiple directions, it’s time to reassess your priorities. Take a moment each day to review the tasks that are consuming too much of your time. Trim down your to-do list and focus only on the few most important tasks that deserve your full attention.
- It might be hard to let go of something, but your choices here are: continue struggling to finish everything, sacrificing sleep, family time, and other goals, delivering subpar work, or dropping one of the tasks.
- It’s okay to admit that you've taken on too much and can’t perform every task as well as you would if you had fewer responsibilities. Often, the fear of the consequences when letting go of a project is unfounded.
- Minimize distractions. Avoid or remove anything that interferes with your ability to focus on what needs to be done. For example, if you’re working on improving your health, get rid of candy and unhealthy foods to make it easier to avoid them. Turn off your phone and email notifications when working, and concentrate fully on completing your tasks.

Have Fun. Life isn’t all about work. Allow yourself time to pursue hobbies, enjoy vacations, and do things that bring you joy. Occasionally indulge in small 'selfish' pleasures, like having an ice cream or buying a new pair of shoes. Now that you're in control, it’s time to relish every experience life has to offer.
- One useful tip is to wake up a few minutes earlier each morning to spend 5 to 15 minutes just for yourself. You could exercise, take a walk, or meditate. This small habit will make a big difference in your life.
Work Efficiently

Start Right Away. After taking a few minutes for yourself, it's time to focus on the most important tasks at hand. Tackle them immediately to avoid the stress of daily delays. Morning is when your energy levels are at their peak, making it easier to concentrate and work effectively. This way, you can accomplish more.
- Try to finish critical tasks within the first one or two hours of the morning.

Focus on One Task at a Time. Identify the most important task and give it your full attention until it's completed. Multitasking can reduce productivity and extend the time it takes to finish the first task by 25%. This happens because shifting focus between tasks wastes time. Don’t stress about completing everything at once—stay in control and tackle each task in sequence, making steady progress on each one.

Stop Wasting Time. We live in a world filled with distractions. However, you need to remember that you're the one in control—either you focus on your work or get distracted by moving games, TV, Facebook, or messages. Instead of going home and zoning out in front of the TV to kill time, do something more meaningful or take care of necessary tasks to maintain control in the present moment. Exercising, pursuing hobbies, or nurturing relationships are all fun and productive ways to spend your time.

Take Breaks. We can focus for about 90 minutes at a time. After that, we start to feel fatigued and can't perform at our best. You should aim to concentrate for 90-minute intervals, followed by a break of at least a few minutes. This allows your brain to rest, your body to recharge, and your mind to relax.

Develop Good Habits. When willpower is limited, it's important not to rely solely on it for self-control. Develop routines that you repeat at the same time each day, making it easier to act or think in certain ways when facing different situations. For example, at home, you could repeatedly say, 'I am calm' while using a bead chain. Then, the next time you're in a stressful situation, you can pull out the bead chain and feel calm.

Take Action. You may have the biggest goals in the world, but you’ll never get anywhere unless you take action to achieve them. Do everything necessary to reach where you want to go. Take small steps every day, and you’ll get closer to your final goal. This could be daily responsibilities, practicing positive thinking, organizing documents, or any other task.
- Don’t get so caught up in the future that you forget to enjoy life in the present. Embrace the journey toward your goals and be grateful for what you’ve already achieved.
- Give your best effort, whether it's a project, a test, or just a hobby. Achievements that take effort will leave you feeling proud and motivated to succeed even more.
Advice
- If today doesn’t go as planned, just remember that tomorrow is a new day. You can always try again the next day to take more control of your life.
- Helping others can give you a sense of fulfillment. If you have the time, consider volunteering somewhere. Animal shelters, soup kitchens, and schools are always in need of assistance.
Warning
- You are an individual, so don’t try to be someone else while striving to take control of your life. Be yourself, but aim to be a leader and a role model that others admire.
