Oat milk is a widely used alternative to animal milk due to its positive environmental and health impact. However, it has a shorter shelf life, typically only lasting 7-10 days after opening, as long as it's refrigerated. After this period, it's recommended to check, smell, or taste the milk to determine if it has spoiled. If it’s still good, you can safely consume it; otherwise, discard it immediately.
Steps
Inspect the Oat Milk

Check the expiration date on the oat milk carton. The expiration date is the first piece of information to verify when determining if oat milk has gone bad. If it hasn’t passed its expiry, the milk is still safe to consume. However, if the carton has been opened for more than 10 days but hasn’t expired, it’s wise to inspect the milk before drinking it.

Pour a small amount of oat milk into the sink to check its texture. Spoiled oat milk will clump and become thicker. To test, simply pour a little oat milk into the sink or a bowl. If you notice clumps or a lumpy texture instead of a smooth consistency, the milk has gone bad.
Check if the milk has turned yellow. Spoiled oat milk will appear yellowish, darker than when it’s fresh. If you notice a change in color compared to when you first purchased it or made it, the milk is no longer good.

Smell the oat milk to detect any sour odor. Simply open the carton and sniff. If the milk has a sour or unpleasant smell, it’s spoiled. Oat milk that has passed its expiration date often develops a distinct sour smell compared to its usual scent.
- Try smelling fresh oat milk so you can easily recognize the sour odor when it’s spoiled.

Take a sip of oat milk to check for a sour taste. If you’re unsure whether the milk has gone bad, pour a little into a spoon and taste it. If the milk tastes sour, spit it out and discard it.
- Oat milk that’s still good will have a normal taste.
Storing Oat Milk

Store unopened oat milk cartons at room temperature in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place. Most oat milk does not require refrigeration if the carton has not been opened. Choose a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, such as a countertop or kitchen cabinet, to store the unopened oat milk.
- You can also place unopened oat milk cartons in the refrigerator if preferred.
- Check the carton packaging for storage instructions to ensure there are no issues storing the oat milk at room temperature.
Refrigerate oat milk immediately after opening the carton. Once you open the carton of oat milk, refrigerate it to maintain its freshness and taste. If left out, the milk will spoil more quickly.
- After pouring out the amount you need, make sure to put the oat milk back in the fridge to keep it cold and fresh.
Consume oat milk within 7-10 days after opening. Unlike animal milk, oat milk doesn't stay fresh for more than 10 days once opened. It’s best to use the entire carton within a week to 10 days to ensure the milk tastes its best.
- If possible, only open the carton of oat milk when you know you can finish it within the next week.

Store homemade oat milk in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. When making your own oat milk at home instead of buying store-bought, place the milk in an airtight container. Keep it in the fridge for no longer than 5 days to ensure it doesn't spoil.
- If you notice that homemade oat milk separates, shake it gently before drinking.
- Label the container with the date you made the milk so you can track its expiration date.
Freeze oat milk to preserve it for a longer period. If you know you won’t finish the oat milk in one go, pour it into a freezer-safe container and freeze it. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months, and you can thaw it in the refrigerator when needed.
- Label the container with the freezing date so you know how long the oat milk has been stored in the freezer.
