Cancel your Planet Fitness membership using these simple steps
Much like other gyms, Planet Fitness makes the process of cancelling your membership somewhat difficult. Nonetheless, with the right amount of persistence and some attention to detail, you can cancel successfully.
Steps to Cancel
Reviewing Your Planet Fitness Agreement

Locate the agreement you signed with Planet Fitness. Even if you joined during a "no contract" or "no sign-up fee" promotion, you still entered into a formal agreement that outlines how cancellations can be processed and under what conditions cancellation fees may be waived.

Review your contract. The contract specifies all terms and conditions, so it's important to understand them. Also, check whether you're under an annual or monthly contract.
- Regardless of payment frequency, most likely you have a one-year contract.
- Take note of your contract's expiration date. If you’re only a couple of months away from the end, it might be more cost-effective to wait before canceling, as early termination fees could amount to several months of regular payments.

Be mindful of the billing cycle. For monthly contracts, cancellation should happen before the 10th of the month, as you are typically billed on the 17th. This gives the company time to process your request. For annual contracts, cancel before the 25th of the month prior to your billing cycle. For example, if you pay your annual fee in March, you must cancel before February 25.
- Think of your fitness membership like a lease agreement. Most gyms require a 30-day notice, and early cancellation fees are standard. If you don’t cancel properly, you may be liable for the entire contract's payment.

Request a waiver of gym fees. If you can provide written evidence of an injury or relocation beyond 25 miles (40 km) from any Planet Fitness location, you might be able to get the fees waived.
- If injured, ask your doctor for a note confirming your inability to use the gym, specifying how long you’ll be unable to attend.
- If you’re moving, your new residence must be more than 25 miles (40 km) from the nearest Planet Fitness. If that’s the case, ask your employer to provide a relocation letter and use maps to demonstrate the distance from your new address to the nearest gym.
- If these situations don’t apply, you’ll need to pay the cancellation fee, but you can still make a case if other factors prevent you from using the gym. Be sure to provide supporting documents for your claim, as they will require evidence.
Canceling the Membership In Person

Prepare the necessary details. You will need your membership ID, and you may also need personal information such as your address, social security number, driver's license number, and date of birth.

Draft a one-page letter requesting the cancellation of your membership. Ensure it aligns with the terms of your contract. In the letter, include a request to waive the cancellation fee if you're eligible and explain why. Be sure to mention the documentation you're submitting along with the letter. Provide your personal information, but only the last four digits of your social security number and your driver's license number. Don’t forget to sign it.
- Planet Fitness requires a written cancellation request.
- Attach supporting documents to back up your request for a fee waiver, and clearly label each document at the top of the page.

Verify the operating hours of your local Membership Services department. Call them to schedule a meeting and inform them that you wish to cancel your membership.

Notify them of your intention to cancel your membership. Meet with a representative and present the written documentation you've prepared.

Request written confirmation of your cancellation. Be sure to ask for an employee's signature. Having proof of your membership cancellation will be important if you need it in the future.

Ensure the cancellation of any future monthly payments. You might need to make one final payment, but make sure all future payments are stopped after that. Settle any outstanding cancellation fees to confirm your membership is officially ended.

Request the contact details of the right person to reach out to. If issues arise after canceling, such as unexpected charges, you'll need to contact the correct individual to resolve the matter.

Keep an eye on your credit card or bank statements. If you notice any unauthorized monthly or annual charges, you should contact the gym immediately.

Contact Membership Services if you notice any additional charges. Act quickly to address the situation and prevent further unauthorized deductions.

Go to the gym in person. If the gym continues to demand payment, present the written cancellation confirmation to show that you have followed the proper cancellation procedure.
Cancelling via Certified Mail

Alternatively, send a certified letter. Certified letters provide tracking, allowing you to confirm that the gym has received your cancellation request.
- To send a certified letter, purchase the certified mail postage either at the post office or online. It is only available for priority or first-class mail.
- Select either an electronic or physical signature for delivery confirmation. The signature proves that someone at Planet Fitness accepted and signed for the letter. Opting for a physical signature may be preferable for its official appearance, but you can also receive an email with the electronic signature.

Prepare your letter. Ensure you include a request for membership cancellation, supporting documentation, your personal details, and a justification for requesting a fee waiver, if relevant. Ask them to send a written confirmation of cancellation and to follow up with a phone call to verify the membership is canceled.

Take the letter to the post office. Hand it over to a postal employee. Certified mail requires an employee’s handling to receive a return receipt confirming delivery.

Contact the gym if you don't receive cancellation confirmation. If you haven't received confirmation of your membership cancellation within a week and a half, call the gym and speak with an employee. If the issue persists, you may need to visit in person to resolve it.

Review your accounts. Make sure there are no ongoing charges, either monthly or annually, that you did not authorize. If you notice any, visit Planet Fitness and present your cancellation proof.
-
Always thoroughly review the contract before engaging with a Planet Fitness representative. Understanding your rights and the specific terms and conditions will help you navigate the cancellation process more efficiently, saving both time and money.
Important Considerations
- Be aware that many Planet Fitness locations receive low ratings from the Better Business Bureau, partly due to their strict policies on membership cancellations.
- Failing to adhere to your contract’s terms or stopping payments without proper cancellation could result in the gym reporting you to credit agencies, negatively impacting your credit report.
