A bandana is a versatile accessory that can be styled in various ways. Try folding it into a traditional triangle and tying it, using it as a headband, tying it pirate-style, or even wrapping it around your wrist. Finally, secure the bandana with a knot or a clip if necessary.
Steps
Fold the bandana into a traditional triangle for tying

Fold the bandana into a triangle. Lay the bandana flat on a hard surface (such as a table). Smooth out any bumps or wrinkles on the fabric. Then, fold the two opposite corners of the bandana toward each other to form a triangle.

Place the bandana on your head. Sweep your hair back so that no strands show underneath or get tangled. Position the bandana so that one corner of the triangle points upward. Place the long edge of the triangle along your forehead, or near your hairline.
Tie the two corners of the triangle. Pull the two corners of the bandana together at the back of your head. Keep the edge of the bandana above your ears. Tie the ends of the bandana into a flat knot.
- Make sure the bandana is not too tight or too loose before securing it in place.
Tuck the pointed top into the bandana. Tuck the top point of the bandana under the knot you just tied at the back of your head. This will help keep the bandana in place, preventing it from flying off or loosening. Tuck in any stray hairs that are exposed.
Use the bandana as a headband

Fix your hair. Before tying the bandana, style your hair in the way you want it to look once the bandana is in place. Adjusting your hair after tying the bandana may cause it to loosen or slip out of place.
Fold the bandana into a headband. Lay the bandana flat on a hard surface. Fold the bandana inward, ensuring each fold is about 5 cm wide. Continue folding until the bandana forms a long strip.
Spray hair setting product onto the headband. To secure the headband in place, spray some hair setting product onto the bandana before tying it on your head. Position the folded bandana with the inside facing up (the side with the triangular folds). Spray from the center of the headband towards both ends.
Place the headband on your head and tie it. Position the folded bandana either on or near your hairline, depending on whether you want your hair to show. Hold both ends of the headband and pull them down under your hair, then tie the ends at the nape of your neck.
Tie the headband upwards. Another way to tie the headband is to place the middle part of the bandana at the back of your head, under your hair. Pull the two ends of the bandana around your head, over your ears, and continue up to the top of your head (slightly above your hairline). Then, tie a knot to secure the headband in place.
Secure the headband. To keep the headband firmly in place, you can use bobby pins. Pin the bandana at the back of your ears or the nape of your neck to hold it tight. Avoid pinning it at the top of your head, as the pins may be visible.
Tie the bandana pirate style
Fold one corner of the bandana toward the opposite corner. Lay the bandana flat. Fold one corner into the center to form a triangle. Make sure the point of the triangle is about 5 cm away from the opposite edge.
Place the bandana on your forehead. Hold both ends of the bandana and position it across your forehead. Ensure that the long edge of the bandana rests above your eyebrows. Pull both ends of the bandana behind your head, aligning them with the position of your ears.
Tie the two ends of the bandana. Tie the bandana and secure it with a simple knot. Tuck the exposed end of the bandana under the knot. Smooth the hair on top of your head down, making sure the bandana stays snugly in place.
Wrap the bandana into a bracelet
Fold the bandana. Start by folding the bandana into a triangle. Then, continue folding it inward, ensuring the width of each fold matches the size you want for your bracelet. Make sure the folds are even and neat.
- To achieve sharp, straight folds, press the fabric while folding the bandana.
Wrap the bandana around your wrist. Once you've folded the bandana into a long strip, wrap it around your wrist. Leave a small gap, about the width of a finger, between the bandana and your wrist to ensure the bracelet isn't too tight. Keep wrapping until about 2.5 cm is left at both ends.
Secure the bracelet. Tie the bandana into a knot to secure it in place. For extra stability, tie two knots and add a clip to hold it firmly. Tuck the remaining fabric under the bracelet.
Tips
- Choose a standard-sized bandana (56 cm x 56 cm) for a perfect fit when tying.
- For children, a 46 cm x 46 cm bandana is ideal.
- If you have long hair, bending forward while tying the bandana helps keep your hair from falling over your neck. This makes it easier to tie and prevents hair from getting caught in the knot.
- If you have bangs, leave a few strands of hair out on each side of your face for a natural look.
- Buy bandanas in a variety of colors to mix and match with your outfits.
