If you've lost your mobile phone or are worried about your child after school hours, GPS technology can help you locate the device accurately. The methods to track your own phone or someone else's are different. Follow this guide to learn how to use GPS for tracking your phone.
Steps
Locating a Lost Android Phone

Open Android Device Manager. Android Device Manager is a tool that helps you locate a lost or stolen Android device. You can install the Android Device Manager app on another Android device or access it via a web browser.

Log in. When you first launch the Android Device Manager, you'll be prompted to sign in to your Google account. Make sure to log in with the account linked to the lost phone.

Locate the device. Once logged in, the Android Device Manager will begin determining the device's location. The last known position of the phone will be displayed at the center of the map. Detailed information will appear in a small window at the top-left corner of the screen.

Locating a Lost iPhone

Log in to iCloud. If you're using an iPhone with an Apple account, you can track a lost iPhone via a web browser or iPad. The location service needs to be enabled, which is typically turned on by default for devices linked to an Apple account.
- You'll need to enter your Apple ID and password to log in to the iCloud website.

Open Find My iPhone. You can find this feature on the iCloud homepage or download the Find My iPhone app on a friend’s phone or iPad.

Select your iPhone. At the top of the Find My iPhone page, you'll see a link titled "All Devices." Click on the link for the device you want to locate. The map will display the last known location of the device.
- If the phone is out of battery or powered off, the location from the last login will be shown.

Choose an action. Click on the dot representing the device's location on the map and then select the "I" button. A window will appear in the top-right corner of the map with several options you can take on the lost phone:
- Play Sound - The iPhone will emit a sound to help you locate it if it's nearby.
- Lost Mode - Lock the iPhone and display a contact number.
- Erase iPhone - If your phone was stolen or you cannot find it, you can choose to wipe all content. This option helps protect sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. Be cautious, as once you erase it, you cannot recover the data.
Locating a Lost Windows Phone

Visit the Windows Phone website. If your phone is linked to a Microsoft account, you can track it via the web interface at the Windows Phone website.

Hover over the My Phone menu. This is located in the top-right corner of the page. Select "Find My Phone" from the dropdown. You will be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account. Make sure to log in with the account linked to the lost phone.

Choose an action. After pinpointing the location, the map will highlight the area and display detailed information about your phone. You can choose from the following actions:
- Print - Print the map showing the phone's last known location.
- Ring - Make the phone ring to help you find it if it's nearby.
- Lock - Set up a lock code to prevent unauthorized access. You can also send a message to display on the lock screen.
- Erase - Wipe all data from the phone in case you can't locate it. Be cautious when choosing this option, as it can't be undone.
Locating a Lost Samsung Phone

Sign in to your Samsung account on the phone. To use Samsung's Find My Mobile service, you need a Samsung account linked to the phone. You can do this by opening the Settings menu, selecting "Accounts and Sync," then "Add account," and choosing "Samsung account." You will be prompted to enter your Samsung login details or create a new account.

Enable Remote Controls. To use the Find My Mobile service, you need to enable the Remote Controls feature. This option is automatically activated when you register your Samsung account on the phone. You can double-check by opening the Settings menu, selecting "Location and Security," and ensuring that the "Remote controls" checkbox is selected.

Open the Find My Mobile website. You can access it through the Samsung homepage. You will be prompted to sign in to your Samsung account. Make sure to log in with the account linked to the lost phone.

Locate your phone. Click on the "Locate my device" button in the left-hand menu. The map will appear and display the phone's last known location.

Choose an action. You can use the left-hand menu to select from the following actions for the lost phone:
- Lock phone - Activate a passcode to lock the phone. You can display a message and a contact number on the lock screen for the person who finds the phone.
- Ring - Make the phone ring to help you locate it if it's nearby.
- Phone log - With this option, you can check the recent call history to see if someone is using your phone without your permission.
- Erase device - Wipe all data from the phone if it’s lost or stolen. Be cautious when selecting this option as it cannot be undone. You can choose to only delete multimedia files or erase everything.
Locating Another Person's Phone

Install a tracking app on the phone you want to track. Several third-party apps allow you to track a device once installed. You need to install the app on the phone you want to track. Some popular apps include GPS Tracking Pro (Android) and GPS TRACKER (iOS).
- There are also hidden GPS tracking apps, such as GPS Tracker Hidden on Android. To install a hidden app, you will need to jailbreak the iPhone.
- Without installing an app on the device, or without permission to track, there is no way to locate the phone.
- Tracking someone without their consent is illegal in many countries.

Contact your network provider to locate your family members' phones. If you're using a family plan, you can activate location tracking for the phones included in the plan.
