Guinea pigs are small, intelligent rodents that can easily be trained to follow simple commands and perform a variety of tricks. To ensure successful training, it’s important to provide them with proper care and meet their daily needs. Remember that every guinea pig is unique, and it may take some time for them to understand what you want during training sessions. Be patient and consistently use positive reinforcement; over time, your guinea pig will be able to follow basic commands and improve their skills.
Steps
Teaching Guinea Pigs Simple Commands

Teach them to run when called. Like most pets, guinea pigs can learn to come when called through training, using food as motivation. Use the name you call them by when speaking, feeding, or rewarding them.
- You can also train your guinea pig to approach when called by picking it up from the cage and placing it a few meters away. Hold its favorite treat in your hand and begin calling its name.
- Incentives are key to getting the guinea pig to run towards you. When they do it correctly, reward them with their favorite treat. Practice this at least once a day, and over time, your guinea pig will come when it hears its name, whether inside or outside the cage.

Teach your guinea pig to stand up. This is another basic command you can teach your pet using food as a reward.
- Hold a treat above its head to encourage your guinea pig to stand on its hind legs to reach it. Use the command "Stand up" and let it grab the treat once it is standing on two legs.
- Repeat the command daily at appropriate times. Over time, your guinea pig will stand on its hind legs when you give the command, even if you don't hold a treat above it.

Run in circles. You can teach your guinea pig to run in circles, whether inside or outside the cage.
- Hold a treat in your hand and let the guinea pig approach you. Once it's in front of you, move your hand in a circular motion and say the command "Go in a circle".
- The guinea pig will follow your hand's movement for the treat, completing a circle. Once it finishes the circle, reward it with a treat. Repeat this daily until it can run in circles on command without needing food.
Teaching Advanced Commands to Guinea Pigs

Teach your guinea pig to push a ball. A small, lightweight ball, like a ping pong ball or something similar, works best as it’s easy for the guinea pig to move. You will also need a long, flat food item, such as a slice of carrot.
- Place the carrot slice on the ground and put the ball on top of it.
- Say "Push the ball" and encourage the guinea pig to push the ball to reach the treat.
- Repeat these steps, gradually removing the food so that your guinea pig learns to push the ball on its own without needing the treat as motivation.

Teach your guinea pig to jump through a hoop. Use a hoop with a diameter of 6-10 cm, or you can make one using a clean plastic pipe. You can also use a lid from a container or a tennis racket without a net. Be sure that anything you use as the hoop is free of sharp edges or anything that could get the guinea pig stuck.
- Place the hoop so that it touches the ground or the bottom of the cage. Hold a treat on the other side of the hoop, or have someone else hold it while you hold the hoop.
- Hold the treat so that the guinea pig can see it through the hoop, then call its name and give the command "Jump through the hoop". You may need to give the guinea pig a gentle nudge to help it jump through the hoop. Over time, your guinea pig will be motivated to jump through the hoop to get the treat.
- Praise and reward it with food once it successfully jumps through. Repeat this several times until your guinea pig can jump through the hoop on command without needing the food as a reward.

Train your guinea pig to use a litter box. Many guinea pig owners teach their pets to use a small box in the bathroom for their waste. However, this requires a lot of practice and patience. If you're just beginning to teach your guinea pig where to go, be prepared for a few accidents and avoid scolding or punishing it when they happen. Guinea pigs respond better to positive words and encouragement.
- To train your guinea pig to use the box, place it in the cage where it tends to relieve itself. Add some hay and a few of its droppings into the box.
- When guiding your guinea pig to use the box, reward it with a treat. Over time, it will learn that using the box leads to a reward, and your pet will start to use it as a regular habit.
