This Mytour article guides you through the process of importing emails and contacts from Yahoo into your Gmail inbox. You also have the option to import only your Yahoo contact list if preferred. To migrate from Yahoo to Gmail, you’ll need a computer with an internet connection (smartphones or tablets are not supported).
Steps
Import all emails and contacts
Open Gmail. Visit https://www.gmail.com/ using your computer’s web browser. Your Gmail inbox will open if you’re already logged into your Gmail account.
- If you’re not logged into Gmail, enter your email address and password to proceed.
Click Settings. This option is located in the middle of the dropdown menu. Clicking it will open the Settings page.
Click the Accounts and Import tab. You’ll find this tab near the top of the Settings page.
Click Import mail and contacts. This link is located within the "Import mail and contacts" section. Clicking it will open a new window.
- You may need to click Import from another address if you’ve previously imported information from another email account.
Enter your Yahoo email address when prompted. Type it into the text field located in the center of the pop-up window.
Click Continue. This button is located below the text field. It will allow Gmail to search for your Yahoo address. Once completed, a new window will appear.
Log in to your Yahoo email account. In the newly opened window, enter your Yahoo email address, click Next, type your email account password, and then click Sign in.
Click Agree when prompted. This blue button is located near the bottom of the window.
Close the Yahoo login window. You will be redirected to another window that appears.
Click Start import. This gray button is located at the bottom of the window.
- You can uncheck boxes in this window beforehand to disable certain features (e.g., importing new Yahoo emails for the next 30 days).
Click OK. This button is located at the bottom of the window. This step instructs Gmail to begin importing your Yahoo mail contacts and conversations.
- As noted by Google, it may take up to two days for new emails to appear in your Gmail inbox.
- You can close the Settings page without affecting the import process.
Import contacts only
Open Gmail. Visit https://www.gmail.com/ using your computer’s web browser. Your Gmail inbox will open if you’re already logged into your Gmail account.
- If you’re not logged into Gmail, enter your email address and password to proceed.
Click Gmail ▼. This button is located in the top-left corner of the inbox. Clicking it will open a dropdown menu.
Click Contacts. You’ll find this option in the dropdown menu. Your Google Contacts page will open.
Ensure you’re using the correct version of Google Contacts. If you see the Try Contacts preview link on the left side of the page, click it and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
Click More. This button is located on the left side of the page. Clicking it will expand the More menu, revealing the Import and Export options.
- If you don’t see this option on the left side of the page, first click ☰ in the top-left corner of the page.
Click Import. This option is located under the More section. Clicking it will open a new window.
Click Yahoo Mail. This button is located at the top of the newly opened window.
Click I AGREE, LET'S GO! when prompted. You’ll find this option in the bottom-right corner of the window. Clicking it will redirect you to the Yahoo login page.
Log in to your Yahoo email account. Enter your Yahoo email address, click Next, type your email account password, and then click Sign in.
Click Agree when prompted. This blue button is located at the bottom of the window. This step confirms that you want to import your Yahoo contacts into your Google Contacts page.
Wait for the Yahoo contacts to finish importing. You’ll receive a notification once the contacts have been successfully imported into your Google Contacts page.
- You can close the Google Contacts page without interrupting the import process.
Tips
- Another way to fully transition from Yahoo Mail to Gmail is by forwarding Yahoo Mail to your Gmail inbox. This allows you to view Yahoo emails in Gmail without importing contacts or opened emails.
Warnings
- Yahoo will delete your account if you do not log in for 12 months.
