Have a lot of photos stored on your iPod and want to transfer them to your computer? Backing up images to your computer allows you to delete them from your iPod, freeing up valuable storage space. Whether you own an early-generation iPod with a click wheel or a newer iPod touch, transferring images only takes a few minutes.
Steps
Using an Early-Generation iPod

Set iPod to Disk Mode. To connect your iPod to a computer and manage files, the iPod must be in Disk Mode. You can do this using iTunes or manually set the iPod to Disk Mode.
- To set the iPod to Disk Mode using iTunes, connect your iPod to the computer, open iTunes, and select it from the Devices bar. In the Summary window, check the "Enable disk use" option in the Options section.
- To manually set the iPod to Disk Mode, press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds. Keep holding the buttons until the Apple logo appears. As soon as the logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons, then press and hold the Select and Play buttons. Hold until the Disk Mode screen appears.
- Refer to this guide for more details on setting your iPod to Disk Mode.

Access the iPod on your computer. If you manually enabled Disk Mode, connect your iPod to the computer. On a Mac, the iPod will appear as a USB drive. On Windows, it will be listed alongside other drives in the Computer/My Computer/This PC window.
- Windows users can quickly access Computer/My Computer/This PC by pressing the Windows key + Pause.

Locate the image files you want to copy. Typically, these are stored in the photos folder, but since the iPod functions as a USB drive, images might be saved elsewhere. Navigate through the folders to find the pictures you wish to transfer.

Transfer images from the iPod to your computer. Select the images you want to copy, then use Edit → , right-click and choose , or press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Command + C (Mac).
- Choose the destination folder and paste the copied images. You can do this by selecting Edit → Paste, right-clicking in the folder and selecting Paste, or pressing Ctrl + V (Windows) or Command + V (Mac).
- If you don’t want to keep the images on the iPod, use the cut function instead of copy to remove the original files after transferring. Cut by pressing Ctrl + X (Windows) or Command + X, then paste as described above.
- You can also transfer files to the iPod if needed.

Wait for the transfer process to complete. If you’re moving a large number of images, the copying process may take some time. A progress bar will show the estimated time remaining.

Eject the iPod. Once the copying process is finished, eject the iPod before disconnecting it from the computer. This step prevents potential data corruption.
- On a Mac, right-click the iPod icon on the Desktop and select Eject. You can now safely disconnect the iPod.
- On Windows, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System Tray, then select the iPod. You can now safely disconnect it.
Using iPod Touch
Windows

Connect the iPod Touch to your computer. If this is the first time connecting the device to your computer, you may need to wait a few minutes while Windows installs the necessary drivers.

Start the import process. If the Autoplay window appears, select "Import pictures and videos." If the Autoplay window does not appear, open the Computer/My Computer/This PC window, right-click on the iPod Touch, and choose Import pictures and videos.

Select the images you want to transfer. Windows will scan the iPod Touch to identify images. A window will then display the number of images found along with a few options. To choose the images you want to copy, select "review, organize, and group items to import" and click the Next button.
- Images will be grouped by the date they were taken. By default, all images will be selected. You can uncheck the box next to any image you don’t want to keep, or uncheck "Select all" at the top of the list to deselect all images.
- You can adjust how the images are grouped by sliding the bar at the bottom right corner.

Organize the images you want to keep. You can tag the transferred images by clicking the "Add tags" button, making them easier to search later. You can also assign custom folder names to each group of images by clicking the "Enter a name" button with the folder icon.

Set import options. Click the "More options" link at the bottom left of the window. This allows you to specify the destination folder for the new images and customize file naming. Click the OK button when done.
- Select "Delete files from device after importing" if you want to free up space on your iPod after transferring the images.

Transfer the files. Click the Import button to start copying the images. Once the process is complete, you’ll be directed to the "Imported Pictures and Videos" library. The images may also be saved in the default "Pictures" folder.
Mac OS X

Connect the iPod Touch to your computer. When you connect the iPod, the iPhoto application will open automatically. If iPhoto doesn’t launch, you can open it manually from the "Applications" folder.

Select the images you want to import. You can import all images on the iPod by clicking "Import # Photos." If you only want to import specific images, click on each photo you wish to transfer to select it. Then, click the "Import Selected Photos" button to copy the chosen images.
- If iPhoto doesn’t display the iPod’s contents, ensure it is selected from the "Devices" section in the left-hand panel.

Choose whether to delete or keep the imported images. After completing the import process, the program will ask if you want to keep the imported images on the iPod or delete them to save storage space. If you plan to transfer the images to another computer, it’s best to keep them on the iPod.
