You can treat gum diseases using various home remedies. These natural ingredients can help address different gum-related issues such as gum inflammation, periodontal disease, and other conditions that require proper care. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to significant oral health problems and affect overall health. You can try some of these remedies on your own, but if symptoms worsen, or if you experience continuous gum bleeding or loose teeth, it’s important to see a dentist immediately.
Steps
Treatment with Home Ingredients

Reduce Stress. According to the American Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), stress can impact oral health. People under stress often experience weakened immune systems, making them more susceptible to periodontal disease and gum infections. They are also at higher risk for other health problems such as diabetes or heart disease.
- Research indicates that not all stress is created equal. Studies conducted at three different universities in the U.S. have shown that participants facing financial difficulties are at the highest risk for developing periodontal disease.

Prepare a sea salt solution. Dissolve a small amount of sea salt into a cup of warm water. Swish the salt solution in your mouth for 30 seconds and then spit it out. Repeat this several times. Saltwater not only helps reduce swollen and bleeding gums but also alleviates swelling caused by infections. However, if an infection has progressed into an abscess, you will need to use antibiotics. It’s recommended to rinse with sea salt water twice daily as a routine.

Apply a tea bag. Steep a tea bag in hot water for 2-3 minutes, then remove it and let it cool until it's comfortable to touch. Place the cooled tea bag on the painful gum area and hold it there for 5 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag can effectively reduce gum infections.
- Applying the tea bag directly to the gum tends to be more effective than drinking tea. Additionally, drinking excessive tea may cause dental issues such as staining. Over time, teeth may change from yellow to brown, and these stains are difficult to remove, even with professional cleaning.

Massage with honey. Honey has natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties due to the presence of propolis. You can use honey to treat gum infections. When brushing your teeth, gently massage a small amount of honey onto the affected gum area.
- Since honey contains a high amount of sugar, avoid applying too much and focus on applying it to the gums rather than the teeth.

Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice can prevent bacteria from adhering to your teeth. Try drinking 120 ml of unsweetened cranberry juice every day.

Make a lemon mixture. Mix lemon juice with a small amount of salt. Stir well and apply the mixture to your teeth. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse your mouth with warm water to cleanse.
- Lemon is an effective remedy for gum disease. First, its anti-inflammatory properties make it highly beneficial in treating gum infections. Additionally, lemon contains vitamin C, which helps combat gum infections and reduce bacteria that create an alkaline pH.

Consume more vitamin C-rich foods. Not only lemons but also a variety of other vitamin C-rich foods can help reduce gum disease, such as oranges, grapes, guavas, kiwis, mangoes, papayas, bell peppers, and strawberries. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that supports and regenerates two areas commonly affected by gum disease: connective tissues and bones.

Increase vitamin D intake. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties, so it's essential to ensure adequate consumption during gum swelling treatment and to prevent gum disease recurrence. Older adults, in particular, should focus on this vitamin. According to the National Institutes of Health (USA), higher levels of vitamin D in the blood seem to reduce the risk of gum disease in individuals aged 50 and above.
- Boost Vitamin D by sunbathing for 15-20 minutes twice a week and consuming foods rich in D such as salmon, whole eggs, sunflower seeds, and cod liver oil.

Brush your teeth with baking soda. Baking soda can neutralize acids in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Therefore, baking soda is more effective as a preventive measure for gum disease rather than a treatment. Mix a small amount of baking soda with warm water to form a paste. Use a soft toothbrush to gently clean your teeth with the mixture.

Quit smoking. Smoking reduces the body’s ability to fight infections and hinders the healing process. Smokers are more likely to suffer from severe gum disease, experience slower recovery, and have a higher risk of tooth loss compared to non-smokers.
Use ingredients from the pharmacy.

Use probiotics for oral health. Lozenges containing Lactobacillus Reuteri Prodentis – a “good bacterium” that resides in the gut – are introduced as an effective treatment for gingivitis. These probiotics help restore the natural balance in the mouth after using disinfectants, mouthwashes, and antibacterial gels.

Use CoQ10. Coenzyme Q10 (also known as Ubiquinone) is a vitamin-like substance that helps the body convert sugars and fats into energy. According to initial studies at the Mayo Clinic (USA), taking or applying CoQ10 to the skin or gums can help treat periodontitis.

Rinse with Listerine or prescription-based mouthwash. Listerine, a special prescription mouthwash, has proven to be one of the most effective formulas for reducing plaque and gingivitis.
- For best results, rinse with Listerine for 30 seconds, twice daily, after diluting with water at a 1:1 ratio.
- The essential oils in Listerine may cause a burning sensation in your mouth, but you will gradually adjust after using it regularly for a few days.

Spray medication on your gums. You can incorporate a chlorhexidine (CHX) spray (a powerful antibacterial agent with plaque-inhibiting properties) into your oral care routine. According to a study on elderly patients prone to periodontal disease, using a 0.2% CHX spray daily helped reduce plaque buildup and gum inflammation.

Use Gengigel. This product contains hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in connective tissues throughout the body. Research has shown that hyaluronate has anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling, and antibacterial properties, making it effective in treating gingivitis and periodontitis. Applying Gengigel to the gums stimulates the production of healthy new tissue. In trials at the University of Rostock (Germany), scientists observed that this substance accelerated the healing process twice as fast, improved blood flow, and reduced inflammation.

Use tea tree oil toothpaste. Tea tree oil has the ability to kill bacteria. Plaque on teeth is a type of bacteria. Therefore, tea tree oil toothpaste can help remove plaque and alleviate gum pain.
- You can also add a drop of tea tree oil to your regular toothpaste each time you brush your teeth. If using tea tree oil extract, remember not to swallow it to avoid stomach irritation issues such as diarrhea.
Tips
- Gum disease occurs when plaque builds up on teeth. Plaque is a sticky, white substance that contains bacteria, formed when bacteria mix with saliva, starches, and debris from other food components. Oral health care is a major global concern, as even minor dental issues can lead to more serious and incurable diseases. Therefore, the use of home remedies for gum disease has become a significant health issue worldwide, encouraging people to adopt simple and effective methods for better oral health care.
- Using salt-lemon remedies often makes teeth more sensitive for a while after use, as the high acidity of lemon can erode tooth enamel, especially when you brush your teeth forcefully.
