Whether you need to type in a language other than your native tongue or add accents to words in your native language, knowing various methods to type accents can significantly speed up your typing process. There are quite a few ways to type accents depending on the program you are using. This article will introduce some of the most common methods.
Note: This article is for those using an English keyboard. Of course, keyboards for other languages often come with the necessary accents pre-installed.
Steps
Typing Accents on a Computer

Try using keyboard shortcuts. You can use these shortcuts on most modern computers running Microsoft Word. This method is quicker and easier to remember than using ASCII codes to create accents.

Press Control + `, then type the letter to add a grave accent. Hold the Control key, then press the grave accent key located near the top-left corner of the keyboard. Release the keys and select the letter you want to accent.
- The grave accent key is usually the ~ key. This is not the same as the apostrophe key.

Press Control + ', then type the letter to add an acute accent. Hold the Control key, then press the apostrophe key. The apostrophe key is usually located next to the Enter key. Release the keys and select the letter you want to accent.

Hold Control, Shift, and 6, then type the letter to add a circumflex accent. Hold the Control and Shift keys while pressing the 6 key. Release the keys and select the desired letter. The 6 key is used because it has the ^ symbol above it.

Press Shift + Control + ~, then type the letter to add a tilde. The tilde key is the same key used to create the grave accent. Remember to hold the Shift key, or you will accidentally type a grave accent. Release the keys and select the desired letter.

Press Shift + Control + :, then type the letter to add an umlaut. The colon key is located next to the apostrophe key. You must hold the Shift key to select the colon instead of the semicolon. Release the keys and select the letter you need.

Follow the same steps to add accents to uppercase letters. However, this time, press the Shift key immediately after typing Control + (your chosen accent), then type the letter. The letter will automatically be capitalized.
Learn Alt Key Codes on Windows (ASCII Codes)

Use ALT key codes. To use these codes, your keyboard must have a separate numeric keypad on the right side. ASCII codes work for Microsoft Office. However, they may not work for all Windows programs, so you’ll need to check compatibility for each program.

Hold the ALT key. While there are many codes to remember, the first step for all codes is to hold the ALT key. Keep holding it as you type the necessary numeric code.

Type the corresponding accent code on the numeric keypad.
- Hold Alt and type the following codes to add a grave accent:
- à = 0224; À = 0192
- è = 0232; È = 0200
- ì = 0236; Ì = 0204
- ò = 0242; Ò = 0210
- ù = 0249; Ù = 0217
- Type the following codes to add an acute accent:
- á = 0225; Á = 0193
- é = 0233; É = 0201
- í = 0237; Í = 0205
- ó = 0243; Ó = 0211
- ú = 0250; Ú = 0218
- ý = 0253; Ý = 0221
- Type the following codes to add a circumflex accent:
- â = 0226; Â = 0194
- ê = 0234; Ê = 0202
- î = 0238; Î = 0206
- ô = 0244; Ô = 0212
- û = 0251; Û = 0219
- Type the following codes to add a tilde:
- ã = 0227; Ã = 0195
- ñ = 0241; Ñ = 0209
- õ = 0245; Õ = 0213
- Type the following codes to add an umlaut:
- ä = 0228; Ä = 0196
- ë = 0235; Ë = 0203
- ï = 0239; Ï = 0207
- ö = 0246; Ö = 0214
- ü = 0252; Ü = 0220
- ÿ = 0255; Ÿ = 0159

Release the ALT key. The accent will appear above the corresponding letter as described. Learning these codes may require some practice due to the number of combinations to remember. Consider creating a cheat sheet with the codes and placing it near your computer for quick reference, especially if you frequently need to use accents. Alternatively, you might consider reconfiguring your keyboard to better suit your typing needs.
Typing Accents on Mac

Use keyboard shortcuts to create accents while typing on a Mac. This method works for text in documents and web content. Hold the Option key first, then press a combination of two other keys to select the type of accent and the letter.

Press Option + `, then type the letter to create a grave accent. Hold the Option key, then press the ` (grave accent) key. Release the keys. You’ll see the accent highlighted in yellow on your screen. Then, press the letter you want to accent. This accent can be applied to any vowel.

Press Option + E, then type the letter to create an acute accent. Press and hold the Option key, then press the E key. Release the keys. Once you see the acute accent highlighted in yellow, you can select the letter. This accent can be added to any vowel.

Press Option + I, then type the letter to create a circumflex accent. Hold the Option key first, then press the I key. Release the keys. After that, select the desired letter. This accent can also be applied to any vowel.

Press Option + N, then type the letter to add a tilde. Hold the Option key, then press the N key. Release the keys. After that, type the letter you want. This accent can only be used on the letters A, N, and O.

Press Option + U, then type the letter to create an umlaut. Hold the Option key, then press the U key. Release the keys. After that, select the desired letter.

Press the Shift key to add accents to uppercase letters. You’ll need to hold the Shift key first to capitalize the letter. Typically, the letter will automatically be capitalized if it’s at the beginning of a sentence.
and Paste Accents

Familiarize yourself with common accents. Always ensure you’re adding the correct accent to a word, as using the wrong one can completely change its meaning. Below are some widely used accents in many European languages:
- Grave accent – à, è, ì, ò, ù
- Acute accent – á, é, í, ó, ú, ý
- Circumflex – â, ê, î, ô, û
- Tilde – ñ, õ, ã
- Umlaut – ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ

Search for an example of the desired word or letter. You can extract text from an existing document, a character map or viewer on your computer, or by searching online. If you search for a commonly accented word using a search engine, you can quickly copy an example of the entire word.

Highlight the desired word or letter. Right-click on your computer to copy the text. Press Command + C to copy if you’re using a Mac.

Paste individual accents into your text. If using a Mac, you can right-click and select "paste and match style" to ensure the accent or accented word matches the rest of your text. On a PC, after pasting, simply highlight the word and adjust the font to match the rest of your document. If you rarely use accents or need a quick solution, this might be the most efficient way to add them.

Tips
- Many keyboards now come with pre-accented letters, allowing you to type most accents directly. This can be a useful feature if you frequently need accented characters.
- On an iPhone or iPad, simply hold down the letter you want to accent, and a row of various accents will appear for you to choose from.
- Some software programs can remap certain keys to accented letters or provide a virtual keyboard where you can point and click on the desired character.
