If you're experiencing acne or blackheads, you might have heard advice recommending you 'open' your pores to clean out the pimples. Experts agree that pores don't actually 'open,' as their size remains unchanged. However, there are many ways to clean your pores, which can make them appear smaller, even though their size doesn't change. Other lifestyle factors, like a healthy diet and regular exercise, can also help keep your pores clear.
Steps
Clean your pores with a clay mask

Wash your face. Before applying the clay mask, wash your face with warm water and gently pat it dry.
- Use warm water, not hot water.

Apply the clay mask. Use your fingertips or a fan brush to spread a thin layer of clay across your face with sweeping motions. Avoid the eyes and mouth areas. The clay mask will draw out oil and dirt from your pores.

Wait for the mask to dry. Do not let the mask dry completely. It will begin to lighten in color but should still feel slightly tacky when touched. If you let it dry fully, it will draw moisture from your skin.

Rinse off the mask. Use water to soften the clay. Gently scrub your face with a washcloth, ensuring all the clay is removed.

Apply moisturizer after using the mask. After your face is dry, apply a thin layer of oil-free moisturizer.
Cleanse your pores with steam
Dip the washcloth in hot water. Turn on the hot water and soak the washcloth.

Wring out the excess water. The washcloth shouldn't be dripping wet.

Place the cloth on your face. Apply the warm washcloth to your face to steam your pores. The steam helps loosen dirt, makeup, and other impurities in your pores.

Repeat the process. When the cloth cools down, you can reheat it with hot water and place it back on your face. Repeat this process up to 3 or 4 times.

Wash your face. Use a foaming cleanser to wash your face thoroughly but gently to remove the dirt and oil that you just steamed out of your pores.
- Washing your face after steaming is a crucial step. The steaming process loosens the hard dirt and oils in your pores, while washing removes them from your face. Skipping this step will make the steaming less effective.
Use parsley water

Wash a handful of fresh parsley leaves. You can leave the stems on, but make sure to wash off any dirt or sand thoroughly.
- Parsley has a natural astringent property that can help cleanse your pores.

Pour boiling water over the parsley. Let the water cool down while the parsley is soaking.

Soak the washcloth in parsley water. Dip the washcloth in the cooled parsley water and wring out the excess.

Wash your face. Gently cleanse your face with a foaming facial cleanser in preparation for using the parsley water. If you typically use a facial lotion, wash your face with parsley water first.

Place the cloth on your face. Apply the washcloth soaked in parsley water to your face for 10-15 minutes.
- This astringent can be used daily.
Mix a baking soda solution

Mix 1 part water with 2 parts baking soda. The mixture will have a paste-like consistency.

Gently massage the mixture onto your face. Use your hands to apply the mixture in circular motions all over your face.

Let the mixture absorb into your skin. Leave the mixture on for about 5 minutes to let it soak into your skin.

Rinse off the mixture. Use water to cleanse the mixture from your face.
- Repeat this process once a week. This treatment helps exfoliate dead skin cells that could block your pores.
Visit a dermatologist

Consult a dermatologist. Ask your doctor about the treatment options that are right for you.

Consider your options. Choose a treatment method.
- You may ask your doctor about exfoliating products like Retin-A Micro. These exfoliants help remove dead skin cells that can clog pores. This method is especially useful if your skin looks dull, as it may indicate dry skin buildup.
- You can also use acid peeling products, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Multiple treatments are needed to see noticeable results. Use acid peeling if you have dry skin.
- Another option is light or laser therapy with intense pulsed light (IPL) or LED. This method boosts collagen production and can significantly reduce the appearance of large pores. It can be combined with acid exfoliation.

Choose the treatment that best fits your budget. Keep in mind that these therapies can be quite expensive, ranging from $100 to $500 (over 2 million – 10 million VND).
Create a daily skincare routine

Remove makeup thoroughly. After a long day, take some time to remove your makeup. If you don't let your skin breathe at the end of the day, your pores may become clogged.
- Try using makeup-removing wipes.
- If the cosmetics you're using irritate your skin or make it worse, try switching to a different product or brand.

Wash your face at least once a day. Dirt and oil can accumulate over time and clog your pores.
- Wash your face twice. During the second wash, massage the cleanser into your skin before rinsing it off, as it will help cleanse your face more deeply.

Exfoliate 2-3 times a week. Regular exfoliation is essential to remove dead skin cells and keep your pores clear. Try using a baking soda mixture.
- If you have dry skin, opt for a gentle exfoliant or a mild exfoliating cream. Follow up with a moisturizer – exfoliating will help your lotion absorb more effectively.
- Avoid strong exfoliants if you have oily or acne-prone skin. Choose products with hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid.
- If you have sensitive skin, use a cleanser or toner rich in plant enzymes twice a week. Avoid harsh exfoliants.

Apply a mask 1-2 times a week. Incorporating a face mask into your skincare routine a few days a week can give you bright skin and clear pores.
- If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a hydrating mask. Clay masks or charcoal-infused masks are great for oily and acne-prone skin.

Use a rotating facial cleansing device. A facial cleanser can deeply cleanse your skin, helping to clear out clogged pores.

Avoid oil-based products. Refrain from using lotions with oil content, and stay away from waterproof cosmetics as they also contain oils. These products can often clog your pores.
Maintain a healthy diet and stay active.

Eat a balanced diet. What you put into your body will show on the outside, and your skin is no exception. To ensure clear pores, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, as they are packed with antioxidants that benefit your skin. Avoid simple sugars found in foods like white bread, pasta, and rice, as they can trigger inflammation. Instead, opt for whole grains. Dairy is also a common irritant for skin.
- Healthy fats found in foods like fish, avocado, nuts, and seeds are excellent for your skin.
- For healthier skin, prioritize whole, unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, yogurt, eggs, and whole-grain bread.

Stay hydrated. Moisture helps keep your skin healthy and soft. Try to drink 6-8 cups of water each day. Carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption.
- If you're tired of plain water, try infused water or caffeine-free herbal tea!

Exercise regularly. It may sound unusual, but your skin's health improves when you engage in physical activities that make you sweat. Exercise enhances blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to skin cells while flushing out toxins.
- Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect your skin when exercising outdoors.
- Avoid wearing makeup while working out, as it can clog pores. To keep your pores clear, wash your face before exercising and shower right after you're done.
