Updating the Instagram app ensures you have the latest version with bug fixes and new features. To do this, open your device’s app store, go to the app list in the menu (for Android), or visit the update page and tap the ‘Update’ button next to Instagram (for iOS). If you want to refresh your Instagram feed, swipe down on the homepage. New posts will load and display. However, once you update the app, you won’t be able to revert to the previous version.
Steps
On Android

Open the Play Store app.

Tap the '≡' button. This button, located in the top right corner, will open a menu with options.

Select 'My apps & games'. This will take you to a list of apps installed on your device.

Tap 'Instagram'. The Instagram store page will appear.
- Apps are listed alphabetically.

Tap 'Update'. This option is usually located near the top of the store page, where the 'Open' button typically appears (next to the 'Uninstall' task, if an update is available).
On iOS

Open the App Store app.

Tap 'Updates'. This button, located at the bottom right of the screen, will display a red notification if an update is available.

Tap the 'Update' button next to the Instagram icon. The Instagram update will automatically download and install.
- The Instagram homepage will show a loading spinner to indicate the update process.
- If Instagram is not listed on this page, there may not be an update for the app. You can swipe down on the Updates page to refresh and check for new updates.
Refresh your feed

Open Instagram.

Tap the 'Home' icon. This button, located in the bottom left corner, will take you to your Instagram feed.

Swipe down on the screen. The refresh icon will appear and begin spinning. After a few seconds, the refresh will complete, and new posts from those you follow will appear.
Advice
- Enable Auto-Update on Android by opening the Play Store, navigating to 'Settings' from the menu, and selecting an option under 'Auto-update apps'.
- Enable Auto-Update on iOS by opening the Settings app, selecting 'iTunes & App Store', and turning on the 'Updates' toggle (under 'Automatic Downloads').
Warning
- Updating the app without WiFi will use a large amount of data.
