Playing video games on PS4 is a lot of fun, but sometimes developers need to fix bugs and resolve issues in their games. The most efficient way to ensure updates happen is to enable automatic downloads, allowing the game to update in the background or when your PS4 is in standby mode. You can also manually update a game by selecting it, then downloading and installing the update.
Steps
Setting Up Automatic Updates

Turn on the PS4 by pressing the button located between the controller's handles. Press the button again if an additional screen prompts you to do so. On the next screen, which asks “Who is using this controller?”, select your user profile and then press the “X” button.

Press up on the game controller and scroll to the “settings” screen. The settings button is white and orange with a small toolbox logo inside a circle. This button is located between the power options and the title menu. Use the D-pad or the left button to navigate to the settings option, then press the “X” button on the controller to access the menu.

Scroll down through the menu options to find the “system” option. The “system” option is located between “accessibility” and “initialisation”. Press the “X” button on the controller to enter the system menu.

Scroll down to the “automatic downloads and uploads” option. This menu item is the second one, situated between “system information” and “voice operation settings”. Press the “X” button on the controller to open this option.

Check the “application update files” box. Once you press the “X” button on the controller to select “application update files”, the apps and games will update automatically. The “application update files” option is located between “saved data” and “install automatically”.

Go to the “power settings” menu. Press the “O” button on the controller twice to return to the “settings” screen, then scroll down to the “power settings” option, which has a small white logo of two hands holding a battery. Once you scroll to the “power settings” option, press the “X” button on the controller to access this menu.

Set the features you want to be available when the PS4 is in rest mode. Select the second menu option, “set functions available in rest mode”. This option allows the game to update even when the PS4 is in rest mode. If you use remote play, you can also enable the option “enable turning on of PS4 from network”.

Put the PS4 in rest mode before turning it off. Hold down the center button on the controller and use the D-pad or the left button to scroll to the “power” option. Select and choose “put PS4 in standby mode”.
Manually Update a Game

Select the game you want to update from the main menu. After powering on the PS4 and accessing your account, use the D-pad or left button to navigate to the game you want to update.

Check for updates through the options menu. Once you've navigated to the game that needs updating, press the options button on the controller. Scroll down to the “check for update” option in the pop-up menu.

Go to the game's update section (if available). If an update is available for the game, you will receive a notification: “An update file for this application is available.” The system will then prompt you to go to the download screen. Press the “X” button on the controller to access the screen.
- If the game does not require an update, the PS4 will notify you accordingly.

Select the game and start the download. On the download screen, a full list of available updates for the application and games will appear. Select the game you want to update by pressing the “X” button on the controller, then confirm your decision to update the game.
- This process takes time. The time it takes to complete the installation depends on the size of the update file.
- You can play the game while the update is installing.
Tips
- You will not be able to update a PS4 game if the system is offline.
