Whether you are using aromatherapy or just want to freshen up your home, essential oil diffuser sticks are a fantastic way to enjoy your favorite scents. You can easily use them at home by inserting the sticks into a container filled with an essential oil mixture. The oil will be drawn up the channels of the sticks, and as it reaches the top, the fragrance will fill the room. As long as you have essential oil and a base, all you need are the diffuser sticks and a container with a narrow opening.
Steps
Choose the Materials

Find a container with a narrow neck. Start by choosing a suitable container. Look for one that is about 12-15 cm tall, with a narrow opening, made of materials like ceramic, glass, stainless steel, clay, or wood. Avoid plastic containers, as essential oils can react with plastic.
- A narrow-neck container helps limit water evaporation. If the water evaporates too much, the concentration of essential oils will be higher, and the scent will be overpowering.
- If the container has a cork, you can drill a hole in the cork. This is one of the best ways to reduce water evaporation.
- You can also use your creativity to choose a diffuser container that matches the colors in your room, or even decorate the container for a more aesthetic look.

Purchase Essential Oil Diffuser Sticks. You can buy reed diffusers online or at health product stores. It's best to use new sticks, as old ones lose their effectiveness after becoming saturated with oil.
- The diffuser sticks should be long enough to extend above the container or bottle by several centimeters. To enhance the fragrance diffusion, consider using sticks that are twice the length of the container or longer.
- Pre-made diffuser sticks usually come in lengths of 25, 30, and 38 cm.
- While bamboo sticks can work, reed sticks generally provide better fragrance diffusion.

Select an Essential Oil. Choose a scent that appeals to you. Be sure to use a 100% pure, concentrated essential oil, as diluted oils won't have a strong enough fragrance. You can use a single type of oil or combine two or three that complement each other.
- Popular essential oil combinations include lavender and peppermint, orange and vanilla, peppermint and patchouli, chamomile and lavender.
- Lavender, jasmine, neroli, and geranium offer relaxing aromas.
- Peppermint, rosemary, tea tree, lemon, basil, and ginger are invigorating scents.
- Chamomile, orange, sandalwood, lavender, and marjoram are wonderful anti-anxiety fragrances.

Choose a Carrier Oil. Carrier oils are neutral oils that dilute essential oils to prevent them from being too overpowering. Common carrier oils include coconut and almond oil. If you prefer not to buy a carrier oil, you can mix water with a little alcohol (at least 90% concentration).
- Alternatives to carrier oils include rubbing alcohol, perfumed alcohol, or vodka mixed with water.
- Popular carrier oils include almond oil, coconut oil, rosemary, sandalwood, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, orange, or grapefruit oil.
Insert the Diffuser Sticks

Measure ¼ cup of carrier oil. Pour ¼ cup (60 ml) of your chosen carrier oil into a measuring cup. If you're using water and alcohol, mix ¼ cup (60 ml) of water with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of alcohol.
- If you're using a smaller bottle, you can slightly adjust the amount of carrier oil, but remember that the ratio of carrier oil to essential oil should be 85:15. For smaller bottles, you can decrease this ratio to 17:1. If you'd like a stronger fragrance, you can aim for a ratio of about 75:25.
- Note that the water and vodka mix will evaporate faster than carrier oils, so you may need to add more frequently.

Add 25 - 30 drops of essential oil. Add 25-30 drops of your chosen essential oil to the measuring cup. If you're using two different oils, you can add 15 drops of each oil.

Mix the oils. Gently stir the oil mixture in the measuring cup by shaking the cup in a circular motion or using a spoon to stir.

Pour the oil mixture into the container. Carefully pour the oil mixture into the small-necked bottle you have chosen. If the measuring cup does not have a pouring spout, you can use a funnel to transfer the liquid into the bottle.

Insert the diffuser sticks. Spread the diffuser sticks out instead of clustering them together. This will allow the diffuser sticks to work more effectively.
Use the essential oil diffuser sticks

Flip the sticks after 1 hour. Leave the diffuser sticks in the oil for an hour, then take them out and flip them so the dry end is immersed in the oil. This way, both ends of the sticks will absorb the oil, and the scent will start spreading faster.

Stir the oil weekly. Gently stir the oil in the bottle once a week to ensure the oil mixture is evenly blended. If you’re using a water and vodka base, you can stir it twice a week.

Flip the sticks every few days. After the first flip, make sure to flip the sticks regularly every 3-4 days. This will prevent the sticks from drying out and allow the scent to continue diffusing.

Add more oil when the scent starts to fade. After about a month, you may notice that the fragrance of the essential oil seems to weaken, even though you are regularly flipping the sticks. Check the bottle to see how much oil is left and top it up with the evaporated oil. Remember to maintain the 75-85/15-25 ratio between the carrier oil and essential oil.

Replace the diffuser sticks every month. After about a month, you may notice that the sticks have absorbed all the oil. Replace the sticks every month or when you notice that the sticks are fully saturated with oil.
Tips
- Remember to flip the sticks and stir the oil regularly, or the diffuser sticks may not work as effectively as you'd like.
- If you're using the diffuser as an aromatherapy tool, consider the properties of the essential oils to choose which ones to use. For example, oils like lavender and jasmine have relaxing effects, while peppermint and lemon can uplift your mood.
