Glycerine, also known as glycerin or glycerol, is a thick, clear, odorless liquid found in many beauty products. It acts as a humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment. Applying glycerine to dry hair helps to add hydration. You can create a glycerine hair spray, make a glycerine hair mask, or even mix glycerine into your conditioner.
Steps
Make a Glycerine Hair Spray

Pour ½ cup of distilled water into a spray bottle. Find a bottle with a fine mist sprayer. The mist effect is important to evenly distribute the solution onto your hair, rather than just wetting specific sections. Start by pouring ½ cup (120 ml) of distilled water into the spray bottle. Distilled water is preferable to tap water, as the minerals in tap water can dry out your hair.

Pour ½ cup of rose water into the bottle (optional). Rose water has a pleasant fragrance that helps keep your hair smelling fresh throughout the day. Add ½ cup (120 ml) of rose water to the spray bottle that already contains distilled water if desired. If you prefer not to use rose water, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender or orange, to scent the hair mist.

Add 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerine and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. It's best to choose vegetable glycerine, such as one extracted from coconut oil or shea butter. Add 2 tablespoons (10 ml) of vegetable glycerine and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of olive oil to the spray bottle to complete the mixture.

Shake the bottle and spray the mixture onto damp hair. Be sure to shake the spray bottle well each time you use it to ensure the oil and glycerine blend with the other ingredients. Then, spray the mixture onto freshly washed hair. Use just enough to cover your hair evenly, but avoid over-spraying to prevent hair from becoming sticky or difficult to style.

Comb and style your hair as usual. To ensure the glycerine mixture is evenly distributed, use a wide-toothed comb to work it through from root to tip. Afterward, style your hair as you normally would.

Spray your hair midday to "refresh" it, if desired. You can use the glycerine hair spray both in the morning and throughout the day to add life to your hair and tame flyaways. Lightly spray the mixture on your hair, then comb for a sleek look, or use your fingers to define curls.
Prepare a glycerine hair mask

Mix one egg with 2 tablespoons of castor oil in a small bowl. To create a moisturizing hair mask, begin by cracking an egg into a small bowl. Then, add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of castor oil and stir the mixture thoroughly.

Add 1 teaspoon of glycerine and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Add 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of glycerine and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of apple cider vinegar into the bowl, then mix until the ingredients are fully combined and the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
- If desired, you can also add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey to the mask mixture.

Apply the mask to your hair and massage it in. Use your hands or a brush to spread the moisturizing hair mask evenly from the roots to the ends. Be sure to gently massage the mixture into your hair.
- This hair care treatment can be repeated once or twice a week.

Wrap your hair with a warm towel and leave the mask on for around 40 minutes. Warm the towel by either leaving it in the sun or using a clothes dryer, and then wrap it around your hair. The heat helps the ingredients in the mask penetrate the hair. Let the mask sit for about 40 minutes.

Shampoo your hair. Use a gentle shampoo that is free of parabens and sulfates to prevent damaging your freshly moisturized hair. Conditioner is not necessary since the mask already provides moisturizing benefits!
Add glycerine to your conditioner

Pour 10 ml of glycerine into a 50 ml bottle of conditioner. First, open the conditioner bottle and place a small funnel over the opening. Then, carefully pour 10 ml of glycerine into the funnel placed over the bottle's opening.
- If your conditioner bottle is larger or smaller than 50 ml, adjust the glycerine amount accordingly.

Shake the conditioner bottle well. After securing the cap on the conditioner bottle, shake it thoroughly to ensure that the glycerine is fully mixed with the conditioner.

Condition your hair as usual. The glycerine-enriched conditioner can be used just like any regular conditioner. Simply apply it to your hair after rinsing out the shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes, rinse thoroughly, and style your hair as you normally do.
How to effectively use glycerine

Monitor the humidity throughout the day. If the air in your area is too dry, glycerine won't be able to draw moisture from the air and might actually cause moisture from your hair to escape into the atmosphere. If the air is too humid, your hair may become puffed up, and excess moisture can lead to frizz. Therefore, if the humidity is significantly higher or lower than usual, you should use less glycerine than you normally would.

Dilute glycerine with water before applying it to your hair. Glycerine is a thick, syrupy substance. Applying pure glycerine to your hair can leave it feeling sticky. Always dilute glycerine with water or another hair-safe liquid, like conditioner, before using it on your hair.

Choose glycerine that is naturally extracted. Glycerine can be derived from plant-based sources such as coconut oil and shea butter, or from animal fats. Synthetic glycerine is also available, but it may pose certain health risks. It's advisable to avoid using synthetic glycerine until more is known about these risks.
Tips
- Glycerine can also help soften dry scalp skin and reduce dandruff.
Warning
- Avoid using glycerine on hair dyed with semi-permanent hair dye, as it may cause the color to fade more quickly.
