How to Use Google Search

This article provides instructions on performing basic search operations on Google, the largest search engine in the world. Once you're familiar with the basics, you can dive deeper into using search filters, conditions, and tools to get the most relevant results.

Open a web browser on your computer, phone, or tablet. You can access Google via any browser, including Safari, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. If your phone or tablet has the Google app (the colorful 'G' icon), you can open the app to access Google directly without a browser.

• Android: On a Samsung device, tap the Internet or Samsung Internet icon. For other devices, tap Chrome, Browser, Web, or a similar app.
• iPhone and iPad: Tap on Safari, the compass icon, located at the bottom of your home screen to open the browser.
• KaiOS: Open the Browser app, the window used to access the internet.
• Mac: Your Mac already has Safari as the default browser. Open it by clicking on the compass icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen.
• Windows 10: You can open the pre-installed Microsoft Edge browser by clicking on the Windows icon in the lower-left corner of the screen and selecting Microsoft Edge from the menu.
• Windows 8 and earlier: Use Internet Explorer to browse. It's represented by a blue 'e' in the Start menu.

Enter www.google.com into the address bar. This is the bar located at the top of your browser. If you're using a smartphone or tablet, tap the address bar to bring up the keyboard and enter the address. On a computer, simply click the address bar to input the data.

• If you are using the Google app on a phone or tablet, proceed to step 4.
• Some browsers like Chrome, Safari, and KaiOS Browser allow you to type search keywords directly into the address bar, bypassing the need to visit Google’s homepage. Other browsers, such as Microsoft Edge, may have a default search engine like Bing.

Press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return. If you're using a mobile device or tablet, tap Search, Enter, or Go to start. Your browser will begin loading Google’s homepage.

Enter the information you want to search in the input field. For example, if you're looking for dining options in Hanoi, try typing "best restaurants in Hanoi".

• You can search for words ("vegetarian," "Bermuda"), phrases ("2004 tsunami," "how to care for houseplants"), questions ("What is the population of Vietnam?", "How much water should I drink?") and much more.
• If you prefer voice search, click or tap the microphone icon (or enable voice search), and follow the on-screen instructions to let Google access your microphone and speak your query aloud.

Click on Google Search or tap the magnifying glass icon. This will initiate a search for the keyword you’ve entered, showing results in a list format.

Click or tap on a result to view more details. If the result is a website, image, video, or any other type of information that seems relevant to your search, click or tap on it to view it in your browser. To return to the search results list, click or tap the browser’s back button (usually a left-pointing arrow in the top-left corner).

• Search results may vary depending on what you're looking for. For example, if searching for a word in the dictionary, you’ll see its definition and usage at the top of the results. For a specific location, the results may include a map.
• If you’ve browsed the first page and still haven’t found the information you need, click or tap Next at the bottom of the page to continue to the next set of results. Most relevant results tend to appear on the first pages of the search results.

Refine your search query to get different results. If you can't find the information you're looking for, modify the details you entered in the search box at the top of the page and try again. You can always refine your search with more specific information, or broaden it if the results seem too narrow.

• For example, instead of searching for 'good restaurants in Hanoi', try searching for 'best bun cha in Hanoi 2020'.
• To improve your search, consider using the filtering results option.

Use search operators to find more precise results. These are special characters that search engines recognize to help refine your search. Here are some examples:

• For a series of words within a phrase, such as quotes or specific topics, placing them in quotation marks (") tells Google you want an exact match. This is helpful when you only remember a few words from a song lyric and want to find the song name.
• Place a minus sign (-) before a word you want to exclude from the search results. For example, if you're searching for 'nano' but don't want results related to the iPod Nano, use the search term nano -iPod.
• Common words like 'how' and 'what' are often overlooked by Google in search. If these words are important to your query, add a plus sign (+) before them.
• To search for social media pages like Twitter or Facebook, add the @ symbol before the keyword. For example: @Mytour.
• If you want to see results from a specific site, place site: before your search term. For example, to search for 'iOS 13' on Mytour, you would type: site:Mytour.com "iOS 13".
• To find items within a specific price range, use the format: phone $300..$700. This will show phones within the $300-$700 price range.

Select the type of result you want to view. Depending on what you're searching for, you can filter the results to show specific types such as images, videos, or articles by using the options above the search results. Here's how:

• Click or tap on Images at the top of the search results to view all images related to your query.
  • Learn more about searching with images on Google.
• Click or tap on Videos to see a list of videos relevant to your search results from various websites, including YouTube.
• Click or tap on News to view articles from news sources related to your search.
• Click or tap on Books to see a list of books related to your search topic.
  • Explore Google’s Books search feature for more details.
• Other options such as Maps, Flights, and Finance may be useful for specific queries. For example, if you're searching for an address, click on Maps to view the location, or click on Flights to plan travel to that destination.

Display results within a specific time frame. If you only want to see results from the last 24 hours, the past year, or another time period, follow these steps:

• Select Tools or Search Tools. On a computer, the Tools option will be at the top of the page, above the results. On a phone or tablet, you may need to swipe the toolbar above the results to the left (it includes options like ALL, NEWS, VIDEOS, and IMAGES), and then select SEARCH TOOLS at the end of the list.
• Click or tap on the Any Time option.
• Choose a different time period. The page will refresh to show only results from that time period.
• Click or tap on Clear at the top of the page to remove the time filter.

Click the Advanced Search button at the bottom of the page. You will now see search results filtered according to the criteria you entered.

• Search results for a particular topic might change (or remain unchanged) after a few days.
• Many web browsers come with a built-in search box that allows you to search on Google and other search engines without needing to visit their websites first. Just enter the keyword directly into the search box.
• You can customize your Google search options using the Preferences link next to the Google search box.
• Consider opening a Google account to gain full access to its search features and other Google internet tools.
• Choose keywords carefully – selecting specific words or phrases related to your search topic will help you find only the most relevant information.
